Full disclosure we have an instant pot but I've had horrible experiences cooking rice with it. A big benefit of the rice cooker is that it's very hard to fuck up when using it, especially the nicer ones with the sensors. Plus the instant pot might stay with my mom anyway

Try to thrift pretty much everything. The only thing I’m iffy on is the aforementioned cookware.

Why's that? I've always heard it's one of the best things to thrift because it's so durable that previous use doesn't matter as much. Or is that only with cast iron?

All good shouts. I have a dinky little stick vac I might just use for the moment as there's no carpet

Hmm that's a good note on the space heater.

The coffee maker I'm looking at is only like $30 and I'll make that back in the money I save not buying premade concentrate pretty quick

I actually have a Drinkmate which isn't connected to Israel afaik! I think the canisters are still Sodastream but I'm working on finding a local homebrew shop that will refill them for cheap compared to swapping them out at target or something

I noticed "The Ultimate FOSS Guide for Android" was very out of date and thought I'd try to make a new version with more current suggestions. But after a while I realized most of the time I was just copying off PrivacyGuides.org which has a pretty robust set of FOSS offerings with an unsurprising focus on privacy.

There are still some things it doesn't cover like Android launchers and keyboards, but we could have an additional sidebar post with more a la carte suggestions.

Thoughts? lea-think

  • Any and all textual works can be decried as "lacking exigence", no matter their content.

  • Make vague references to "the canon". Do not explain what canon you're talking about.

  • Employ words like "ethic (singular)", "schema", "polity". It doesn't matter if you use them correctly, just use them.

  • Pick a noun or an adjective to use as a verb. Just give it your own definition and let the audience figure it out.

  • Use obtuse definitions of philosophical frameworks, like "it's about bodies moving through space". Do not elaborate or make it easier to tell what the fuck that's supposed to mean.

  • If someone is making a good argument that you don't like, say it's "reinforcing teleological norms" and refuse to engage with it any more.

  • And, of course, the classic: Anything you don't like is "deeply unserious".

~~thank u for coming to my ted talk~~

My modded minecraft was stuttering and eventually crashed, figured it it was either not enough RAM or an issue with the pack. Turns out it was HUNDREDS of duplicates of OmenInstallMonitor.exe eating up 99% of my 32gb of RAM. Thankfully other people had already figured out the fix so that wasn't too hard but it's just kinda crazy that such a thing can happen.

Huh

Seems like the big money has seen enough. Unless Brandon has the best interview performance in history with George Stephanopoulos tomorrow and lands a couple backflips on the way out I don't think there's a way back joever

Biden has significantly lower favorability than alternative Democrats

All alternatives would improve upon Biden’s standing against Trump, which is a change from earlier data showing all were comparable

Link to the Puck article this original broke in, shoutout to @JamesConeZone for posting it in the news mega

I've talked on here about my Pixel 4a and how much I like it, but the battery life has been really dreadful as of late. I was at 900+ cycles on the stock battery so not exactly a surprise, but I didn't want to buy a new phone so replacing the battery seemed the best way forward. I got a kit from iFixit for ~$60 including an OEM battery.

I read online that it's a tough process since the 4a has a very fragile screen that's likely to break during such repairs, but everything went (mostly) fine! The iFixit guide got me most of the way there but I supplemented with a YouTube video. Hardest part was actually removing the adhesive strips keeping the battery in place, I ended up having to use isopropyl alcohol to dissolve some of the glue instead of pulling it out. Also I did kinda puncture the old battery which shot out some sparks, but it seems to be stable (currently chilling on my kitchen table until I can take it to be recycled/disposed of properly).

One thing to note about the iFixit kit is that the included adhesive strips for sticking the screen back on are kinda doodoo and likely to get stuck on the kit packaging during transit, which ruins them. I tried to make do with the remaining strips but noticed edges of the screen sticking up, so I replaced it the next day using some TESA tape I got off Amazon which seems to work great.

Overall kinda sucks that you have to jump through so many hoops, but was also somewhat satisfying to feel like I accomished something. And of course battery life is much better!

Had an interview today that I feel okay to good-ish about. Was hoping to talk to the person I'd be working under but they were tied up on time sensitive stuff so I just talked to the HR person.

He was telling me that in addition to a very modest amount of conventional PTO, they give a paid weekday off every three weeks. It was spun like a good thing because the amount of total time off was more than the national average, but that's pretty dishonest right? PTO is conventionally understood to be time you can take off whenever for whatever reason, not fixed days off like holidays.

I generally like the vibe of the place but it's got weird things like that, plus not being open to hybrid because it doesn't align with their "values" and some Russel Brand quotes hung up on the walls

So turns out there's this concept called "Escheatment" where governments will take custody of unclaimed property, like if a check is sent to your previous address so you never cash it because you didn't know about it.

In the US, this is handled by state governments. If you google "[state] escheatment" you should see a .gov website that will let you search your name to see if they've got anything for you so you can file a claim. There are aggregator searches like missingmoney.com, but it didn't list some of the entries that the official one did so I wouldn't recommend it. You should check any state you've lived, and maybe your family too if you're feeling saucy.

I didn't find anything in my name, but it showed similar results by last name and I found stuff for my mom, dad, sister, a few aunts and uncles, and even my late grandmother! It usually won't be much, but it's your property, so you might as well get it, right? Plus in the case of your family you get to ring them up and say "Hey, how would you like some money?"

It's for a local LGBTQ nonprofit. Honestly I poured my soul into this application, was honest in ways i never have been, and now that it's done the only thing I feel is dread. I took a big step and let myself feel hope, but I know with near certainty given the past 293+ job applications that have ended in failure, i can't help but feel that this go the same way. i don't know how that will feel—worse, maybe, since i exposed the barest hint of what I want to be and will inevitably be punished for it. i'm so tired of this.
