Human beings could be great but went for greath.

[–] mrmanager 3 points 8 months ago

Haha yeah. Well I'm an arch user for at least a decade, and i saw manjaro come.. It was very popular in the beginning. Then they started making strange decisions, but I think many people are still happy with it. Otherwise I think endevourOS is doing good. :)

I haven't seen Linux users fights over distros... Ever. We just have lots of choices, and most of them are awesome.

[–] mrmanager 43 points 9 months ago (4 children)

It's a sign of the times that this is upvoted so much. When I was growing up, this was called normal behavior and was boring and nobody talked about it.

[–] mrmanager 7 points 9 months ago

Such a chad move. Respect!

[–] mrmanager 5 points 10 months ago

Thank you!

Yeah since the content is federated, it's no guarantee that anything is actually deleted. Someone could listen to everything that is posted on the entire lemmy network and copy it in real time to some other database.

So never use real names or give up personal details if you care about your privacy online.

[–] mrmanager 4 points 10 months ago

No but I really appriciate you asking. :) I have a good job so paying the server expenses is not difficult. This is also the advantage of using distributed / federated technology - each server can be small and the costs are kept low.

If we gain a lot of users and need to upgrade, we can find some ways for you guys to contribute with some donations, but right now I'm just happy to see people using the instance and enjoying Lemmy.

I hope it can be a small step away from being treated like you are just a consumer on the internet.

[–] mrmanager 2 points 10 months ago

Yes I very much agree. Being part of something that is not big tech is really inspiring I think. It shows that we don't need these megacorps to allow us to talk to eachother through their services.

I don't use Google anymore except for Google maps in my car. :) I guess they can spy on where I'm driving. But no search history.

[–] mrmanager 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Thanks! Yeah I understand, will check his docs later then and change our settings accordingly.

Ah really? Yeah that's not good. One obvious way would be enough! :)

New version of Lemmy just got released by the devs. :)

I plan to wait a few days before I upgrade the instance, just to make sure there isn't any weirdness being discovered. It's a small bug fix release so nothing major.

Instance Performance (self.general)
submitted 2 years ago by mrmanager to c/general

How is the instance performance for everyone? Just wanted to ask so there is no weird things going on.

If you notice images are loading slowish, it's because of how Lemmy software works. Images are stored on the instance where they were created, so if they were created on Lemmy.world and they are slow, you may see them loading slower here as well.

But the text content should be really fast since it's local on the instance.

There are people joining every day but we are still small, and if there is a need for more performance, I will upgrade the instance. Right now it looks like things are humming along fine.

Lemmy Mobile Clients (self.lemmyguides)

There are a lot of mobile clients for Lemmy. The web interface is not that great in my opinion, so a mobile app is kind of needed. Some of the more popular ones:

If you are a new user to Lemmy, the most important thing is to subscribe to lots of communities so you get a nice feed of new posts and comments.

Click on Communities link at the top and select All. A long list of communities will appear. Subscribe to many of them. You can always unsubscribe if they are annoying you later.

This list of communities are only the ones that someone has subscribed to on this instance already. But there is something like 20.000+ communities in the entire lemmy network.

Go to https://lemmyverse.net/communities in a new tab. If you want to subscribe to something here, copy the link (ex: !humor@beehaw.org).

Paste that link into the search box here at lemmy.today. Make sure Communities is selected in the list box to filter out comments etc.

It should look like this:

Clicking on the green link will take you to the community and you can click Subscribe on the upper right:

And thats about it. If you have any questions, just ask. :)

Hi guys,

Lemmy.today was just updated to 0.18.3 that came out yesterday.

Major changes

This version brings major optimizations to the database queries, which significantly reduces CPU usage. There is also a change to the way federation activities are stored, which reduces database size by around 80%. Special thanks to @phiresky for their work on DB optimizations.

The federation code now includes a check for dead instances which is used when sending activities. This helps to reduce the amount of outgoing POST requests, and also reduce server load.

In terms of security, Lemmy now performs HTML sanitization on all messages which are submitted through the API or received via federation. Together with the tightened content-security-policy from 0.18.2, cross-site scripting attacks are now much more difficult.

Other than that, there are numerous bug fixes and minor enhancements.

In the land of Big Brother, where they watch every move, They promise you freedom, but they've got something to prove, You're thinking you're free, but it's a digital ruse, With every click, every like, every view, they abuse.

They say it's all free, just sign up, no cost, But they're dealing in data, your privacy lost. Yeah, your likes, your dreams, your soul's the cost, In this world of 1984, we're all just exhaust.

(Chorus) If it's free, you're the product, in the corporate play, You're just a pawn in the game they play, If it's subscription, you're still the prey, Either way, you're a product, every night and day.

(Verse 2) Telescreens blaring, thought police on patrol, They're mining our minds, control is their goal. Newspeak is the language, they're on a roll, In this dystopian dream, they've got us in a stranglehold.

No matter the price, no matter the fee, In this world, my friend, nothing is free. We're all commodities in their decree, In this world of 1984, that's the decree.

(Chorus) If it's free, you're the product, in their wicked game, Just a cog in their machine, it's such a shame, Subscription or not, it's all the same, In the eyes of the corporation, you're just a name.

(Bridge) They sell us convenience, they sell us lies, In this digital age, freedom's the prize. We're trading our souls, for their disguise, In this Orwellian nightmare, we've got to rise.

(Chorus) If it's free, you're the product, it's their master plan, Wake up now and take a stand. Subscription or not, they've got the upper hand, It's time to break free from this corporate land.

(Outro) In the heart of 1984, we find the truth, We're not products, we're the living proof. With every heartbeat, every word, every uncensored thought, We're breaking free from the chains they've wrought.

I thought this was kind of a fun way to show discontent with Chromiums added Web Integration - someone made a pull request to simply remove it.

Its already been approved by a lot of us, why not add your approval as well? Click the Approve button and add your name to the list of people supporting the removal.

Google will of course not care but I thought it was a fun gesture.

I think we need all support we can get to fight Google on this, so I welcome Brave here actually.

The awesome Taylor Lorenz reports this on Mastadon. Highly recommend to follow her if you like these updates about what's going on.

Just sharing this on Lemmy as well for all you amazing neovim users. :)

It's really nice to see this desktop come along. A third proper Linux desktop environment like Plasma and Gnome written in Rust. From system76.

Just loving this project. I think it will become real popular real quick when it ships with PopOS.
