No, the software is written by tankies. But now its used on thousands of instances, with all kinds of political views.

I think its the best technology that has arrived in a long time. Now we can talk without corporations in the middle.

You and me would not be able to talk like this without an american big tech corp being involved otherwise, which is just insane. Ok, there are forums still, but they dont have a lot of users. Lemmy could be a game changer.

I just stay out of these discussions since I think there are only two genders in the world - male or female. :)

Also I dont believe its some framework humans have come up with. Its what we have in nature everywhere on the planet.

Of course you can be gay and be attracted to the same gender. But identifying as something other than a female or a man? Thats where the entire thing goes off the rails. There are only two genders.

Totally agree with this. I never downvote anything because it's stupid in my opinion. It just sends a message that certain opinions are not welcome. I don't want to only talk to people I agree with.

Use the ansible Lemmy install, it's very simple and will also create https certs and everything. But you need a domain first, pointed at your hosted server ip address.

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ansible

So basically:

  • Buy domain
  • Rent a server somewhere (hetzner is great and cheap).
  • Point domain at server ip.
  • Use the ansible install against your server to install everything.

That's pretty much it. The ansible install takes care of everything.

Then you need to subscribe to some other instance community from your instance so other instances know you exist, for federation to work.

They say a lot of things don't they. :)

I don't trust what they say, but maybe you get lucky.

There is a lot of low effort posts right now, yeah. I think people are not sure if users will stay and therefore kind of chitchat a lot right now instead of using it for real knowledge sharing.

Some instances like mine don't require emails because I think that should be up to the user to choose. If he forgets his password, he can't do a reset if he doesn't have an email. But if he uses a password manager, that's very unlikely to happen anyway.

An Sso account would mean one identity across all instances, which can be tracked and monitored.

Users using different account on different instances with different passwords are a lot more difficult to track.

Googles entire operation is about connecting users across different websites using identifiers and so on, because that's where the value is. All that data under one profile is highly valuable to them.

It's always like this by the way - users give up privacy for convenience or "safety".

Later, you add ads when it's too convenient to move away from the service.

Perfect for the IG audience perhaps... I imagine they love celebs and shit.

They will never let you remove yourself without deleting the IG account... At least I don't think it will happen.
