weird derealisaion introspection leading to a weird snap into anxiey due to over thinking about higher spacial dimensions
weird shit in here
so, one of my favourite books as a teen was flatland. it's a book about dogmatism and social heirarchy (there's like a whole polygon caste system, it's a whole thing), through the lense of a 2 dimensional square as he is taught about he 3rd dimension by a sphere. so the Square is just a regular ass dude who lives in flatland, and is one day visited by a Sphere who is a prothlesizer of the divine 3rd dimension (trust me, this is going somewhere). and ofc the square just sees the sphere as a circle that gets thicker or smaller as he moves through the spacial plane of flatland, he can only percive 2 spacial dimensions, he literally cannot see 'up' to perceive of the sphere. one of the things Sphere does to show there is a higher spacial dimension is he can ofc see inside and touch the inside of the Square. you can see inside any side profile box drawn in 2d from our 'above'. now an implication within flatland that is not really explored beyond the hypotheical is there's just as likely an even higher 4th dimensional plane which could look down on, and within, objects of 3 dimensional space and you could never know they were there. you can never look 'up' at 4th dimensional space to see what could poke your intestines from the 'side'.I'm a fan of higher spatial dimensions. I agree that it isn't a reason to be paranoid, even if such an entity wanted to interact. Robbing the US Treasury or getting rid of all the world's nukes would be far more interesting. Sure, it could look at you naked, but it would see all 8 billion people that way whether they had clothes on or not.
I'm also curious what exactly it would mean if there were higher temporal dimensions.
Temporal dimensions, interesting, I never thought about those.
Maybe going a step in a second time dimension would apply a different set of physics to the quantums?
I mean, when you get into the physics, physicists are pretty sure that it’s just the 3 space dimensions and 1 dimension of time, and if there are other dimensions they’re almost certainly so small they only become relevant on the quantum scale, otherwise things like gravity wouldn’t work the way that they do (like, instead of gravity decreasing proportional to distance squared, it would be proportional to distance cubed or higher because the gravity would basically “leak” into the other dimensions and affect them to, but gravity does indeed decrease proportional to distance squared so any higher dimensions can’t be significant)
They'd see your insides!
There are 4 dimensions and you're already a 4 dimensional being, just that one of those dimensions is time and it only goes one way and isn't really a viewable dimension other than a slice or moment I guess. Sometimes physicists talk about a lot more dimensions to make stuff like string theory work, but those are always tiny "curled up" dimensions - their analogy is a cable, viewed from far away it's a line (1 dimension) but up close as if you were an ant crawling in it it's a whole world you can crawl around, (2 dimensions just one much smaller and it loops around). If there was a 4 spatial dimension being watching us, we'd probably be pretty boring to them. Do you notice all the bugs crawling around you or on you?
A Square (the protagonist) asks the Sphere if there is a 4th dimension towards the end of his journey and the Sphere insults him and kicks him back down to Flatland for even suggesting it lol. Just like the King Circle did, or the King Line, or even the Monad in 0 dimensions who didn't even recognize A Square or the Sphere as bring seperate. The implication is that it just keeps going up forever but most people's minds are just too closed to ever be curious enough to think about it.
Oh yeah and the Sphere is very curious how Flatland can really exist how it's possible that they don't have some height. A Square was like that in Lineland, he through the Linelanders had to have some kind of width. But they weren't.
To 4th dimensional watcher they probably mostly just see our insides and probably can barely perceive our volume outline compared to their hypervolume perception. I wonder if they'd even care about your skin or whatever, they'd mostly see your guts.
the pointland god king is such a real one for thinking everything he hears is his own idea in his own head
If you think that stuff is interesting, I cannot recommend the series "Remembrance of Earth's Past" by Liu Cixin enough (if you haven't read it already that is). It's my favorite sifi of all time and it's not even close (especially books 2 and 3) 💧
yeah I read those last year, really enjoyed the series. he really doesn't go deep on the 4th dimension, and the other higher spacial dimensions, as much as I'd like tho. it's like woah this is a thing, and we're right at the last blip of a puddle of it. it more kind of ties into the most horrific shit species do to one another in the dark forest than actually a deep dive on higher dimensionality. I fw that opening witht the seige of Constantinople and what seems like weird magic shit and then looping back around way later in the book to explain it after leaving you with questions, that was fun.
