One of my coworkers told me once that she gives vague answers like "I listen to everything" because she doesn't want to talk about music with people. She was like "no one knows the obscure Korean pop I'm listening to so I just don't want to go into it".

Which I kind of get. She put some thought into it and it was a tactical answer.

I just say "all kinds of stuff. Depends on my mood." Sometimes I like wacky metal, sometimes I'm over it. Same goes for outlaw country or hip hop or punk or whatever.

[–] state_electrician@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Yeah, same for me. I listen to a little bit of everything. Indie songwriter, post rock, Finnish folk, post metal, speed metal, Japanese pop, Japanese folk, the list goes on. So I usually just say "depends on my mood".

This is kinda the situation for me. I don't listen to any one particular kind of music and I don't want to get sucked into a conversation about whatever genre you have decided to pigeon hole yourself into and are clearly gearing up to vomit all over me.

I'd love to hear about her obscure K-pop, or your strange south American alternative, or whatever really, I'm never gonna say no to at least learning about it and hearing it out, if I don't like it I'll just not listen to it again.

in the car:

"what do we wanna listen to? name a band!"

"whatever's fine"

"no seriously! just give me a name!"

"ok. goatwhore."

"what?"

"GOAT. WHORE."

"..."

"..."

"...i'm gonna put on some nice ambient electronic..."

I was working for that women once, and she was super nice. I was like 30 and she was around 50, but she tried really hard to be cool and hip. She said she's hosting a dinner party bbq kinda deal and if i wanna come. I said i'd love to, but i already have tickets for a concert.
"What concert?"
"Oh it's that band, they are not really famous."
"I know some bands, you know?!"
"Infant Annihilator"
"What's that?"
'They are called INFANT ANNIHILATOR'
"Oh okay... Never heard of them."

[–] BakerBagel@midwest.social 18 points 5 months ago (1 children)

No one has ever heard of any band. I got to loads if concerts, and unless it is a mainstream pop artist, no one ever knows who they are.

Eh...

I have a boss at work. Not a Boss-boss, he's a team leader, but he's my boss.

Anyway he got 3 strikes for being a metal-head the other day:

Wallet chain - who the fuck still has a wallet chain? A metal head

Up close he has a hole in his lip - fucking lip piercing? Metalhead

So he asked me if I wanted to do any overtime on the weekend and I said casually "Nah, I'm going to see Tenacious D on Saturday" and got the reply "Yeah fuck that, I wouldn't be working overtime if I was doing that!"

THIRD STRIKE

Finna change that "everything" to, "everything with a legible logo"

[–] peto@lemm.ee 29 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Some times the classics are the best.

[–] Skua@kbin.social 26 points 5 months ago

party cannon it is

[–] Shurimal@kbin.social 5 points 5 months ago

Everything's legible if you practice deciphering it enough.

[–] WereCat@lemmy.world 24 points 5 months ago (1 children)

When I say "everything" I mean that I don't have a specific list of genres I listen to. I can listen to any kind of music as long as it's to my liking and it does not matter if it's dead metal or k-pop or classical... Every genre has a lot of stuff I like and a lot of stuff I hate.

I'm a "I listen to everything except Country and Ska" friend.

[–] LightTrails@lemmy.world 14 points 5 months ago (1 children)

*modern pop country. Waylon, Willie, Loretta, Dolly and the like are alright with me.

[–] kitnaht@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (5 children)

I'm the opposite. I can stand some of the modern pop country, but I can't stand whiny old country.

[–] BakerBagel@midwest.social 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Nothing whiny about Johnny Cash stealing car parts from Cadillac

Yeah I peace out when I can't tell if it's the vocalist or the garbage disposal is making that noise

[–] Justas@sh.itjust.works 12 points 5 months ago

Me: plays metal to friend Friend: "Can we, like, turn the music off and just sit in silence."

Same friend listens to trance which just makes me fall asleep during work.

[–] apocalypticat@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

"The music is okay, I just don't like the screaming". Although that only describes a portion of the metal bands I like, to me that's like someone saying: "I like Monet paintings, but I'm not a fan of the colorful flowers."

[–] The_Tired_Horizon@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I get this reaction from people when playing Skinny Puppy, Igorrr, Herbie Hancock ffs.... these people are sheltered, LOL!

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I listen to almost anything and I recognise most of these artists.

My listening habits are "pretty much anything but country, rap/hiphop/r&b, and the extreme side of metal". Which means I listen to classical (Chopin is the shit), most pop music, some metal, industrial, retrowave, 80/90's, "oldies" (pre-80's... Shout out to the playmates), etc, etc.

I also listen to some country, mainly stuff that has more substance than "truck" and "beer". I draw the line with metal when I can't understand the singer anymore, which, I'm sorry to my metal friends but a lot of the screaming/growling lyrical contributions fall into this category. I just don't "get" the music so I'm not a fan.

With rap/hiphop/r&b, the same rules apply for lyrical content as country (more or less), except with the concepts of getting/being rich (and/or bragging about the things you have), and guns/crime.... I guess?

Admittedly, those country/rap/hiphop/R&B exceptions still exclude a vast majority of the genres.

I'm game for pretty much anything else.

I still casually pop on some Backstreet boys, or Garth Brooks, or Eminem.... Meanwhile I spend a good amount of time listening to the likes of vnv nation, Skrillex, electric cowboy, Gorillaz, 3TEETH, etc (the list is very long).

What I pick to listen to is highly dependent on my mood.

Death metal? Pffft, that's mainstream swill.

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

I listen to almost all genres, but not everything. I get bored of one genre all the time and don't like everything in one genre.

[–] SomeGuy69@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

I like everything if it's at least distinguishable from nails in a mixer, because that's not music to me.

[–] sexual_tomato@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 months ago

Or something like Vatstep DSP by Hrvatski because nobody realizes they wanted to hear Stephen Hawking be the lead singer for an experimental electronic music band

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I’ve tried to like it. But machine-gun drums and vomiting on the mic like you have norovirus dry heaves just don’t work for me.
