Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

MODERATORS

(Rosario, Argentina, 1928 - Higueras, Bolivia, 1967) Latin-American Revolutionary. Along with Fidel Castro, whose movement he joined in 1956, he was one of the main architects of the triumph of the Cuban revolution (1959). He later held positions of great relevance in the new regime, but, dissatisfied with the inoperation of the offices and faithful to his purpose of extending the revolution to other Latin American countries, in 1966 he resumed his guerrilla activity in Bolivia, where he would be captured and executed a year later.

Given his life thus in the fight against imperialism and dictatorship, Che Guevara became the greatest revolutionary myth of the 20th century. He was immediately an icon of the youth of May 68, and his figure has remained as a timeless symbol of ideals of freedom and justice that, like the heroes of yesteryear, he judged more valuable than life itself.

Ernesto Che Guevara was born into a wealthy family in Argentina, where he studied medicine. His leftist militancy led him to participate in the opposition against Juan Domingo Perón; Since 1953 he traveled through Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Guatemala, discovering the prevailing misery among the masses of Latin America and the omnipresence of North American imperialism in the region, and participating in multiple opposition movements, experiences that definitely inclined him towards Marxism.

In 1955 Ernesto Che Guevara met Fidel Castro and his brother Raúl Castro in Mexico, who were preparing a revolutionary expedition to Cuba. Guevara befriended the Castros, joined the group as a doctor, and landed with them in Cuba in 1956. Once the guerrillas settled in the Sierra Maestra, Guevara became Fidel's lieutenant and commanded one of the two columns that came out of the eastern mountains toward the west to liberate the island. He participated in the decisive battle for the capture of Santa Clara (1958) and finally entered Havana in 1959, ending the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.

The new revolutionary Cuba granted Guevara Cuban nationality and appointed him head of the Militia and director of the Agrarian Reform Institute (1959), then president of the National Bank and Minister of Economy (1960), and, finally, Minister of Industry (1961). ). In those years, Guevara represented Cuba in various international forums, in which he frontally denounced US imperialism. On a trip around the world he met Nasser, Nehru, Sukarno and Tito (1959); On another trip he met various Soviet leaders and the Chinese Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong.:based-department:

In the task of building a new society in Cuba, and especially in the field of economics, Che Guevara was one of Fidel Castro's most tireless collaborators. In the economic controversy that took place at the beginning of the new cuba, he opted for an original, creative and not bureaucratic or institutionalized interpretation of Marxist principles. Looking for a path to the real independence of Cuba, he strove for the industrialization of the country, linking it to the aid of the Soviet Union, once the attempt to invade the island by the United States had failed and the socialist character of the Cuban revolution had been clarified ( 1961).

Now relieved of his positions in the Cuban state, Che Guevara returned to Latin America in 1966 to launch a revolution that he hoped would be continental in scope: Bolivia thanks to its position in the middle of the continent and its strong natural defences would make ot the ideal starting socialist state.

However, his action did not catch on with the Bolivian masses. From the beginning, his group, baptized as the National Liberation Army and made up of Cuban veterans from the Sierra Maestra and some Bolivian communists, found themselves lacking in support from the peasants, completely alien to the movement. Without any popular support in the rural world, and without support in the big cities for the rejection of communist political organizations, the chances of success drastically diminished.

Isolated in a jungle region where he suffered the exacerbation of his asthmatic disease, Ernesto Guevara was betrayed by local peasants and fell into an ambush by the Bolivian army in the Valle Grande region, where he was wounded and arrested on October 8, 1967. Given Since Che had already become a symbol for young people around the world, the Bolivian military, advised by the CIA, wanted to destroy the revolutionary myth, assassinating him and then exposing his corpse, photographing himself with him, and bury him in secret. In 1997 the remains of Che Guevara were located, exhumed and transferred to Cuba, where they were buried with all honors by the Castro's Cuba

More and more I'm starting to think Americans require political education starting at a much more basic level known as, "how to not be an asshole to each other for no reason all the time". It seems to be deeply ingrained in the majority of people that disagreement requires being shitty and likely racist to one another.

Okay you motherfuckers, I know I'm living in a simulation now. I can't be convinced otherwise.

Last night I was thinking about nothing in particular while brushing my teeth, then the thought popped into my head: "What if I ever matched on a dating app with someone with the same first name as me? Wouldn't that be awkward?"

I left the bathroom, sat on my couch, checked my phone for notifications, and sure enough, someone with the same first name as me had messaged me. And this was grindr, an app rather well known for users not using real names - if they use names at all.

I know the universe is fucking with me now. I must be in a simulation.

I feel like being lefty and being able to delineate reality and capitalist delusion has been so helpful, even if I was still a pig liberal having that knowledge I feel like would be so helpful.

Like most things out of my immediate influence are delusions propagated by capitalist so there's not much time wasted wondering why things are or getting mad at random things. I know exactly why.

I feel like my choices are much better tempered knowing the whole story and knowing that often my available choices are orders behind the correct answer or what should happen.

It's also infinitely depressing because reality as a concept doesnt exist in the shape where you are. Compared to somewhere like North Korea where they saw the state of the world, saw their goals in contrast to their position and went from there. That sounds like reality to me moreso than dying from Burger King Angry Whopper mad at brown people for no reason.

The BPP tore a hole in delusion and manifested reality and they were truly living.

In two weeks it'll be a year since I got laid off.

According to my spreadsheet I crossed 300 applications yesterday, with over 75% of those receiving no reply at all, 19% being rejections, and the remaining 6% being either too recent to categorize (I allow a two week period since application before I file it as "No Reply") or edge cases like a scam or likely scam.

I did have a good interview earlier this week, the only one in recent memory to recognize me for having valuable skills, but they're pausing hiring for the position.

if the world wants me around it's not doing a very good job of making the pitch agony-deep

I’m too drunk to understand what anyone else is talking about so here’s my shit. I generally avoid worshipping communist figures because I’m an ignorant bitch and no investigation means no right to speak. I’m also aware that western leftists like myself tend to romanticize martyrdom and prioritize leftist figures whose lives are cut short over leftists whose lives are full of complicated human mistakes and subtlety.

All that said, Che was hot as fuck and I think he’s super cool and I like imagining him on his motorcycle.

After hanging out here for a few months it is starting to feel like the mainstream liberal discourse is just collectively insane?? Like. Mass delusion level. I was always skeptical of western lib talking points but thought at least some of them were decent on welfare / social progressiveness etc. but now I just feel like I’m watching an increasingly unhinged horrorshow carousel that everyone I know is clinging onto for dear life

I mostly have to beg for recognition thaty i have emotional needs and an internal emotional life. My emotional need, the need for support and help with investigation of my emotional world, is not being met. I usually get a brief flicker of confusion from people when i try to convey any emotional state that's taxing or trying or would require support. Idk if it's that my friends don't recognize me as a person who has emotions beyond depressed, righteous injustice, and horny, or if they don't know how to address me, or if they don't care. I'm trying to express that I find my partner I've spent the week with moving on to her next adventure to be upsetting but i'm struggling and my attempts to voice it have not been met with any reciprocal effort from her. Meeeeeh.

Being a dude and figuring out the whole emotional vulnerability thing seems to mostly lead to being able to see that the world is not able or ready to meet the emotional needs of men in a meaningful way. And I can't lead a one man revolution over here. It's mostly just me and bell hooks and Achilles on a turbid see of confusion and upset, looking for signs of land.

Mostly I want a hug, and some reassurance, and for the person I've spent the week talking about emotional intelligence with to recognize that as something I need through dialogue and conversation instead of having to explicitly ask "please hold me for a while". Cuz I could just ask for a hug, but I want to be recognized as a person who wants and needs a hug. I want my partner to notice that i've been asking for hugs and kisses and touch all week, and recognize that even if that's not really her thing that it's important to me, and show that she's thinking about my needs, and that when I say that i'm feeling melancholy or struggling to express how I feel about her leaving, that she wants to extend some comfort and ask and investigate that with me.

Seriously, folks. Tell the men in your life that you care about them, and you know they're full of feelings, and ask them about their feelings and comfort and wellbeing, and ask them if they'd like touch or a hug or a kiss, check in, help them explore what they're feeling and experiencing, help them engage in dialogue about themselves. It's hard to do in a world that expect you to be an unfeeling brick, or at most express anger, derision, contempt, or a very patriarchical and chauvanistic care for other rooted in posession and protection. I just want my buddy to notice I'm sad, or ask me how I'm feeling.
