You’re allowed to make direct eye contact with the sky orb if you want to, nobody will stop you.

[-] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 38 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Yep.

IIRC: An early (pre-telescope) astronomer did for tens of minutes at a time to document sun spots, but it took weeks for his sight to return and it was likely permanently damaged because of it.

[-] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 10 points 9 months ago

Sheesh, and all he had to do was invent cameras to spare his eyes. For shame.

[-] p1mrx@sh.itjust.works 4 points 9 months ago

He only really needed to invent basic office supplies:

[-] misterundercoat@lemmy.world 14 points 9 months ago

Look into the orb long enough, and the orb will graciously unburden you from sight, because you have done all the seeing. Very efficient.

[-] quinkin@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago

At least once.

[-] redballooon@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago

Science tells you otherwise though! coincidence?

[-] tomi000@lemmy.world 45 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I really hope conspiracy theorists start looking at the forbidden sky orb, maybe through telescopes for more detail.

[-] DJKayDawg@lemmy.world 16 points 9 months ago

I met one who did. He called it 'sungazing' and was certain that the practice charged him with positive healing energy. He figured it was safe because he did it near sunrise and sunset. He was trying to look a little longer each time and build his endurance and get more sun energy. I haven't seen him in a few years so I can't update on outcomes.

YouTube is one hell of a drug. I hope he has moved onto less harmful beliefs.

[-] AnActOfCreation@programming.dev 14 points 9 months ago

I haven't seen him in a few years

Don't worry, he hasn't either.

[-] odium@programming.dev 10 points 9 months ago

Flat earthists already on it

[-] Ubermeisters@lemmy.zip 5 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

"On" here meaning topologically coexisting on a co-located 2d plane of course.

[-] battleshack@sh.itjust.works 34 points 9 months ago

I used to immerse myself in the depths of the burning eye in the sky all the time as a kid. Stared for minutes on end. May have some permanent eye damage, but I also used to press fingers into my eyeballs at night to see the blobiverse, and gazed into the perfect red of my laser pointers. I was a dumb kid. Still am at 35. Though my hearing is perfect.

[-] Lt_Cdr_Data@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 9 months ago

Same. My parents told me not to look straight into the sun, i saw it as a challenge.

[-] penguinsAreRapists@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

Haha I also enjoyed staring into blobiverse. Oi also loved the smell of car exhaust

[-] curiousaur@reddthat.com 31 points 9 months ago

The phrase eye contact implies it's an eye.

[-] thepianistfroggollum@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 9 months ago

Do you seriously believe it isn't? Time to wake up.

[-] moipe@lemmy.world 27 points 9 months ago

I do question that. In fact, I asked the orb what the deal was. The orb said [apply sun burn to face and arms] and that was the end of the discussion. I find him to be firm but fair and when I step out of line he says [apply sun burn to top of feet].

[-] SuckMyWang@lemmy.world 19 points 9 months ago

Your feet don’t burn as much because they’re further away from the sun

[-] moipe@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago
[-] Tarkcanis@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

This interaction made my morning 🤣 thanks ya'll.

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Fun fact: Wang is how some jokester taught the Chinese was the proper way to Anglicize the word 王. That word is pronounced like Wong. I know this because one of my bosses was helping his cousin open her own restaurant and they named it 旺旺中餐厅 Wang Wang Chinese restaurant. I told him he wanted to modify the spelling, since Wang is already a word in English, and she probably didn't want to own the Dick Dick Chinese Restaurant.

[-] Furbag@lemmy.world 23 points 9 months ago

This is so true. I once decided to patriotically defy the government and stare at the sky orb, and then the government stole my sight to prevent me from seeing the truth. WAKE UP PEOPLE!

[-] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 17 points 9 months ago

There's a stove top surface in the kitchen that you are not allowed to make direct contact with and you don't question that?

[-] dudinax@programming.dev 16 points 9 months ago

This is where H.P. Lovecraft got it wrong. The universe is even more horrifying and incomprehensible than he imagined, but it doesn't drive people crazy. They just say "oh cool", then ignore it.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 9 months ago

Oh no, I question that all the time. The government should not be stopping me from staring at the sky orb! First amendment and second amendment rules!

[-] SuckMyWang@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

I heard YouTube banned videos showing that if you look at the orb through a magnifying glass you can see things the government don’t want you to see. If they’re banning videos about it they must be really scared of people finding out the truth

[-] GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip 5 points 9 months ago

I have so little faith in the average user nowadays that I am slightly anxious that someone will take you at face value and do it

[-] SuckMyWang@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

If you think about it, free speech is about as close as you can come to a completely libertarian system. Even then it was obvious early on that having completely unrestricted free speech for all is dumb as fuck because so many people have bad intentions or are dumb as fuck. So we’re left with not being able to agree where to draw the line and with disproportionately powerful people being able to leverage all that “freedom” towards their own goals while weak and dumb people with good intentions get chewed up by their ideology influencing machines.

[-] rtxn@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

That is exactly how the flying spaghetti monster became a religion.

[-] rtxn@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Do not believe the fabricated conspiracy spread by Big Tech! Instead, ask why they're trying to distract us from the moon! What are they hiding?

[-] MustrumR@kbin.social 2 points 9 months ago
[-] rtxn@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago
[-] SuckMyWang@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Now that you mention it I haven’t seen the moon all day. Sus as fuck. Please screen shot this comment and upload it to multiple cloud servers in case I disappear

[-] grabyourmotherskeys@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Pretty sure the first amendment just prevents the government from looking at the sky orb.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

STOP VIOLATING MY RIGHTS! TRUMP 2023!

[-] sentinelthesalty@lemmy.world 10 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

You are not allowed to look at it if you aren't worthy. Unlike you all, me the chosen champion of Ra, is allowed to gaze upon its magnificent form without any repercussions. And it has enlightened me, it has elevated my consiousness and allowed me to temporarily experince a higher plane of existance, during what you lesser folk call "Sun stroke induced hallucinations".

[-] FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

You best not be talking shit about my boy Sol.

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 7 points 9 months ago

Wake up sheeple!

[-] SinkingLotus@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

This type of stuff always reminds me of "Welcome to Nightvale".

[-] obinice@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

As children, we all questioned it and we're curious about it, then we learned what it was and the reasons it was dangerous to look at it, and went on with our lives.

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Pretty sure you meant were, not we're, but this is the rare autocorrect success, as it makes sense both ways.

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 3 points 9 months ago

I literally had a nightmare about this, I posted it in the dreams community:

[-] ehrenschwan@feddit.de 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I was just recently thinking about some planet from Star Trek where there are certain limitations, like the day being too hot for humans but the night being ok. And then I recognized exactly this fact.
