Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

Blas Roca Calederio, born on July 22 in 1908, was a Cuban communist revolutionary and radical journalist. Roca helped lead the 1933 general strike that ousted Gerardo Machado, and served in Fidel Castro's revolutionary government.

Born into a poor family, Roca began working at age eleven, shining shoes. According to Castro, Roca was already a prominent communist organizer in the province of Oriente at 21 years old.

At age 25, Roca helped lead a two week general strike that ousted dictator Gerardo Machado. By 1936, he was head of the Cuban Communist Party and began serving as a politican, helping author the 1940 Cuban Constitution.

Under Roca's leadership, Cuban communists were instrumental in providing an organizational and ideological structure for Castro's revolution, as well as playing a pivotal role using the party's long-standing ties with the Soviet Union to promote increasingly closer ties during the early days of the revolution.

In 1961, Blas Roca, leading a party delegation, presented a Cuban flag to Nikita Khrushchev during a meeting of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Roca served on the first central committee and politburo of the new Communist Party of Cuba, founded in 1965.

Lotta of goofy liberal takes going around but one of my faves is when someone says Kamala is a cop and libs go “um ackshually she was a DA and a prosecutor!”

Having to wait for your tv's OS to update to watch a youtube video is such a weird experience. Oh there we go, I can finally watch "updating please do not turn off your device for 10 hours" in peace

is exaggeration purely amerikan affectation? meow-floppy

to be "all in" implies staking all you have, how can you be all in politically? you stake what exactly?

also, greatest of all time/best of all time grinds my gears, the fuck you talking about mate, choose a decade at least

I was gonna make a joke regarding "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" stealing from this passage:

But it turns out Le Guin actually was inspired by it! Although she only remembered it later by way of another text.

The Brothers Karamazov is an incredible book so far. I've very rarely seen such skill in subtley portraying all the depth of human feeling via the medium of a bunch of drunk or in love (and often both) Russians.

I highly recommend the book although it is challenging at times with all its names and references and diversions to paint a picture of all the various facets of Russian life in the 19th century.

There is something so profoundly life-affirming about a great novel, perhaps even moreso if it is a century old.

So I have a flight to seattle tomorrow. My friend that was gonna drive us to South Dakota could not get the rental car for reasons that don't matter. I am going to be in Seattle tomorrow and I have no other plans than to go see the Lenin statue while I figure out what the fuck to do next. I have an extra travel budget of $1300 if we don't get the rental car sorted in which case problem solved.

If anyone has any experience with this sort of unplanned travel any advice is welcome.

One way or another I am making it to sundance.

Also if anyone wants to hang out in seattle I am at the point where I would. We can meet at the Lenin statue lol

I have no hope for Kamala (in that she won't make anything better, I kinda think she may pull it off), but man chuds are cracking me up. They are so mad. Schadenfreude is such a great feeling.

Replying from the last thread

@oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net Hope you recover quickly. Do antivirals if you can get them.

I may have got it from my partner as I had really mild symptoms. But twice daily ATK testing for 7 days showed nothing. So maybe I'm still novid??

Frieren is so fucking good. 9 episodes in and there’s only been, like, 2 or 3 “anime moments”. Two of which are just the magic obsessed elf discovering perv magic because she’s gotta catch all the spells. Madhouse does it again.

This shit really takes the cake, first actual genuine jazz elitism Ive stumbled upon in the wild.

Like what the fuck do you mean that people who don't like jazz are sitting down to listen to Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus and fucking Pharoah Sanders?

Complete fucking nonsense, the jazz for people who don't like jazz is video game soundtracks and japanese fusion, there's no fucking chance that you are finding some demographic of people who only listen to Headhunters and thinks that's the pinnacle of jazz without listening to anything else.

Dunno if people might be sensitive about this but just in case

CW: talking about fly swattingHoly shit after spending one day in my parents' kitchen/living room I am now radicalized against flies. I myself live in the attic under a tall roof, there's probably dozens of spiders in all the nooks and crannies up there so flies never last long at my place.

But here at my parents' it's like a biblical plague. And it's not filthy or messy or anything, they have a cleaning lady who comes and cleans the entire place every single week. But over the course of today I killed no less than THIRTY-FOUR FUCKING FLIES and I still hear buzzing as I'm typing this. I had reservations at first but that went away after fly #12 or so. This is absolute insanity.

Edit: Huge shoutout to spiders. They make no noise. They stay out of your way. They reliably kill all the annoying bugs. Absolute MVPs.

Edit 2: thirty-five
