Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

Paulo Freire, born on the 19th of September in 1921, was a Brazilian philosopher and radical pedagogue most known for his 1968 work Pedagogy of the Oppressed. "Language is never neutral."

Paulo was born in Recife, the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Initially affluent, his family experienced hardship during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and Freire's education suffered due to his own experiences with poverty and hunger.

Freire began working as a schoolteacher in the 1940s, beginning to serve as the director of the Pernambuco Department of Education and Culture in 1946. Due to the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état, where a military dictatorship was put in place with the support of the United States, Paulo Freire was exiled from his home country, an exile that lasted 16 years.

Freire then worked in Chile, until April 1969 when he accepted a temporary position at Harvard University. It was during this period, in 1968, that Freire published his most famous work, "Pedagogy of the Oppressed".

In this text, Freire criticizes what he calls the "banking method" of education, wherein a teacher "deposits" knowledge into an empty vessel, the student, or "bank". Instead, Freire calls upon teacher to engage in a more dialog-centric or creative education, one in which the suppressed experiences of the oppressed help create knowledge, fostering a social reality in which the marginalized are humanized.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed has since become the third most cited book in the social sciences, according to Elliott D. Green. As of 2000, the book had sold over 750,000 copies worldwide.

"Manipulation, sloganizing, depositing, regimentation, and prescription cannot be components of revolutionary praxis, precisely because they are the components of the praxis of domination."

Paulo Freire

A coworker died suddenly last night from a heart attack. I also heard of a friend of a friend who passed away suddenly too. I know we're mourning but I can't help but feel like it's linked to COVID

Greedy, out-of-touch mods are planning to release a Hexbear Pro. Will cost 10.99 petrodollars per month subscription on top of requiring an UHD-BR disc install taking up 125GB of HDD space (though they highly recommend installing on an SSD).

It will have:

  • 4K, HDR site UI
  • Ray-traced emojis
  • VR comms
  • Can handle over 115,000 PPS (posts per second)
  • Can handle over 30000 open tabs
  • A new double up-bear vote for subscribed users
  • Enhanced anti-lib posting AI to auto-respond to deffies and xen@s if you don't want to deal with them
  • Hall effect mouse scrolling
  • Triple-encrypted DMs
  • And access to a new Girls-only comm

I'm PISSED.

I fucking hate the, "Sitting on the porch with the shotgun, scaring my daughter's boyfriend" genre of boomer joke.

It's such a gross sentiment, trying to "defend" their daughters chastity, like the virginity belongs to the father.

[–] PurrLure@hexbear.net 15 points 3 months ago

Gives the same vibes as father daughter dances.

No father son dances though, that would be hexbear-gay-pride

Yesterday I found out a coworker who was seemingly progressive follows the Daily Wire and Babylon Bee on social media, including on an account that couldn't have been made anymore than a year and a half ago.

Yeah, this is the same coworker that I found out goes to a fake progressive Christian church a couple months ago, so I basically had a surprised-pika moment.

On one hand, as someone with autism I'm almost impressed by the masking skills and brainworm wrangling this chud must summon every in-office day. On the other... wow yeah this is why you can't really make friends at work. Too many wolves in sheep's clothing. It's a bad habit of mine to think more kindly of people I've spent large quantities of time with, but I'm actually really grateful in times like these that overall I'm a jaded and alienated person because revealing too much about myself could have absolutely cost me my job. reigen-sweat

On a more positive note, I do find it super funny that some chuds feel the need to do this even though the majority of people working there are also chuds. I guess leftism and general anti-capitalist sentiment really has been exploding in the USA over the last half a decade.

Crushposting:

Ok, if my calculations are correct, there are two people who I like who both like me. What the fuck. This should be illegal. This shit barely happens in movies.

This means I can’t pick one because it will throw a wrench in with the other. And when my calculations turn out to be wrong and I pick the one who actually didn’t like me, the other who did like me wouldn’t (and indeed shouldn’t) be able to trust me. At that point I would fully jokerfy.

Couldn’t I have met these people a couple months or years apart, e.g. (a crazy example with no relation to anything) the average amount of time a relationship lasts?

God doesn’t know how to distribute love and then when he does, he does it in a fucking impossible way, what a hateful little bitch.

Trump promising to remove tax on overtime payment when the republican strategy is to greatly increase the number of hours before you qualify for overtime pay is actually kind of a brilliant strategy. I hate that Republicans are very competently evil.

How does anyone quit smoking cigarettes?

(I have never intentionally smoked nicotine I'm not asking for advice)

I can barely manage my THC consumption enough to keep it relatively stable and i don't have to fight the urge to buy it every time I buy gas or groceries.

Anyone who has quit any drug that's actually hardcore addictive with serious withdrawals too, I can't even imagine the willpower.

If you've got that much control over your mind and body you're basically a superhero to me

[–] anonochronomus@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago (12 children)

I quit heroin and cocaine a few years back, I was a serious junkie for a long long time. Smoking is a way harder habit to kick.
