Because well, I am Asexual, and well.... it is incredibly rare to find another Asexual person anywhere. Not to shame people for their interests, but I am not comfortable with a lot of posts, even if they are meant to be for a joke, implying that everyone gets horny, and/or that apparent "Peak Hedonism" or whatever it's called, is about having lots of sex. Again, something I am not interested in.

I have seen no signs of any Asexual friendly spaces on this site, not even in the LGBTQIA+ Subcommunity for this site. Although I have been socially isolated by otherwise queer friendly spaces before, for "only" being Asexual.

[โ€“] josie@vegantheoryclub.org 8 points 3 months ago

Thanks for this link. I have never met other asexuals before I am starting to feel like the only one lol.

[โ€“] pmk@lemmy.sdf.org 34 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Are you looking for a space to specifically discuss asexuality, or a space about general things minus references to sex?

[โ€“] TheChemist@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

Kind of both.

[โ€“] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 33 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Not sure what you are asking. Like is there a comm where nobody ever talks about sex?

[โ€“] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 36 points 3 months ago (1 children)

the volcel police are only a post away

Yeah, I'm confused. This site is one of the least horny places I've ever seen on the internet.

[โ€“] TheSpectreOfGay@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago

i definitely see stuff i would define as horny posting fairly often

but the horniness level tends to be lower than it is in other places, which for me personally means it's fine bc it doesn't trigger my sex repulsion. but it's def there

[โ€“] wtypstanaccount04@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Ehh i dunno about that chief, there's more horny posting than you think.

[โ€“] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

And itโ€™s still not that horny. You have no idea how much I can horn it up

[โ€“] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

They probably mean a place they can talk about lives and experiences of asexual folks. In a word rife by sexuals (not sure this is the correct term) being asexual could be isolating.

[โ€“] Alunyanners@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

In a word rife by sexuals (not sure this is the correct term)

i think allosexual would be more accurate here. they're like, the complete opposite to us asexuals lmao

[โ€“] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 3 months ago

Yeah looks correct

Allosexual, sometimes shortened to allo, is a term used to describe a person who experiences sexual attraction and does not identify as asexual.

[โ€“] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (2 children)

idk if there's a term for this, but I assume OP feels alienated by the assumption that experiencing sexual attraction is the norm. Like heteronormativity but for sexuality in general, I suppose.

[โ€“] simpletailor@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

Allonormativity is what you're talking about. Amatonormativity is the assumptions related to romantic attraction/relationships.

Feel free to post some memes from Reddit's r/aaaaaaacccccccce or whatever โ€” we just don't have as many active Fediverse users to sustain active communities.

[โ€“] grym@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

I definitely think ace comrades (and aro comrades too!) should get a space or regular thread somewhere for themselves, to talk and share what they want to share.

I guess there needs to be a minimum amount of people/interest in it, but I think even if it's not many people here it should be an option.

[โ€“] Lussy@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I do think Asexuals should get a space of their own. I donโ€™t think the entire site should have to repress its sexuality when itโ€™s already weirdly puritanical on that end. I also find it odd for asexuals to be incorporated into LGBTQ comm when sexuality is literally the defining criteria for the comm.

[โ€“] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I think GSM (gender and sexual minorities) is perhaps a more accurate label. The community is about being different from the cishet majority, unless you're suggesting straight trans people should be excluded too?

[โ€“] Lussy@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Iโ€™m not sure I understand. Why wouldnโ€™t straight trans people be part of an lgbtq comm?

[โ€“] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

when sexuality is literally the defining criteria for the comm.

Are you suggesting being trans is a sexual thing?

[โ€“] Aquilae@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

They probably forgot to write the "straight" part when you were replying to the comment.

[โ€“] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

That's correct. The criticism is still valid though.

[โ€“] bigbrowncommie69@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Because Asexual people aren't heterosexual. Nor are they necessarily adverse to sex and sexuality. They experience and engage with sexuality differently to allosexual people. They're not just people who are sexually repressed.

[โ€“] Lussy@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago

I didnโ€™t say they were sexually repressed

[โ€“] alexandra_kollontai@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It depends. Are you looking for:

  • an asexual-centric thread where you can talk about your experiences with asexuality?
  • general discussion threads where nobody is horny?
    • I find that sexuality can often be an inescapable persistent undercurrent of online discussions, which really frustrates me. this definitely happens on hexbear sometimes, but I think it's not too bad, as you can always invoke the magic words to get that out of here
      the magic wordsvolcel police!
  • or have you experienced outright ace-phobia on the site?
    • if so, use the report button or inform the mods, and they'll purge the perpetrators

We've had the VoPo as part of this community's culture since at least 2 years before this site even launched. It's a clear enforcement of "neither horny nor a coomer be". Or does "asexual-friendly" mean "asexual-centric"?

I have at least two ace friends and they're great.
