Donald Trump said in an interview released on Sunday that he did not think he would run for president again in 2028 if he loses this year’s race for the White House.

In an interview on the Full Measure television show with Sharyl Attkisson, the former US president – who ran in 2016 and 2020 – was asked whether he saw himself running yet again in four years time.

“No, I don’t,” Trump answered. “I don’t see that at all.”

He said: “Hopefully, we’re going to be successful.”

Well he definitely said that in 2020, and if someone had had the foresight to ask him in 2016 he probably would have said it then as well, so I’m going to go ahead and be a little skeptical here.

Well, yes. Trump Lies. We all know that. One can only hope that his ongoing mental breakdown will be clearly visible by them even to the hardcore fans of him.

Honestly this election is clearly taking a toll on him, and in four more years that unhealthy lifestyle might have caught up with him

Three u.s establishment would never allow a former president to go to prison. It's never going to happen. All we can hope for is death by big Mac by the time he's 80

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (2 children)

He is literally awaiting sentencing. Admittedly, he had to break a lot of fucking laws for something to stick but I expect we'll be seeing his Prison Memiors on sale for years and years.

I think the whale nuker is right. He might get a lot of probation, but prison is almost assuredly not going to happen. I was sort of holding out hope, but this soft handling by the judges seems too nice.

I just hope he goes to prison. We better not get any of this "heal the country" shit. You know what will heal the country? Having people who break the look law go to jail.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I want to see him flee to Russia and see how Putin handles him after he's done being useful. Will Putin finance his lavish lifestyle to show others that working with him might pay off or will Putin deal with him more harshly for failing to get America out of his imperialist way? Or maybe Putin will make a show out of promising to support him financially but then a "rival" will deal with Trump, making Putin very angry but there's nothing that can be done now, such is life.

Or would Trump even be willing to flee if it means losing SS protection, now that he knows at least two people wanted to shoot him badly enough to risk their lives on it?

He also said he’d “disappear” if he lost the 2020 election. At this rate the only way we will stop hearing about him is when he dies, and yet Im sure once we are rid of his existence, the deranged cultists will continue to believe he still stalks the earthly realm.

He also said he wouldn’t run again if he lost to Biden 4 years ago. Why does anyone believe a single word that comes out of his shithole of a mouth?

I'm just surprised that he admitted to possibly losing

[–] SpruceBringsteen@lemmy.world 23 points 5 days ago

Last time he said he'd leave the country and we'd never hear from him again if he lost.

Yet here we are.

[–] TheProtagonist@lemmy.world 22 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I thought the election is “stolen” if he should lose.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 15 points 5 days ago

He didn't really though. The headline makes it sound like Trump said "I won't run again if I lose." But that's not the case. The exchange was actually:

Interviewer: If you're not successful this time, do you see yourself running again in four years?

Trump: No I don't. I think that will be... uhh... that will be it. I don't see that at all. Hopefully we're going to be successful.

He said that about 2024 in 2020, but here he is. Did he forget because of dementia or is he just a liar?

It is an abuser tactic, silent treatment or withholding affection if he doesn't get what he wants. I guess that might work on his cult even if it has the opposite effect on people with multiple brain cells.

If he is alive in 2028 he will run again. Hopefully he is in prison by then.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 72 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Hopefully he won't be alive by then.

Otherwise, I'd trust him keeping his word on this as much as I'd trust him in general: not at all

[–] Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (7 children)

Come on, name one time he's ever lied before. You can't even name two. There's not even a dozen times. Certainly it's less than a hundred? A thousand?

ETA: Wikipedia says it's nearly 31000 just while he was president, if you count false or misleading, still more than 5000/2.5 yr if you only count outright falsehoods.

[–] xantoxis@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

You can't name just one time he lied because if you refer to any specific statement he's made, it contains at least two lies.

It'll be difficult to run for president inside a cell.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

Difficult but not illegal or impossible.

And that's assuming that he'll ever see consequences anywhere near that magnitude for his many crimes. Which is unlikely.

From indisputably natural causes. I would love for the martyrdom and conspiracy theories to be optimally minimized. Cultists do scary shit to the general population, and I'd rather that they just get bored and move on to the next grift to be victimized by since they're clearly not interested in not being targeted rubes. The persecution complex is an inherent chunk of their entire identity.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I want him to cark it on stage from something like getting struck by lightning.

I also wonder if the secret service would notice if I snuck some giant tesla coils onto his rally stage. maybe a big red button on the podium that flips them back on?

[–] nehal3m@sh.itjust.works 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That button should be on his lectern and it should say TRUMP so he’ll do the honors himself.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

"Do Not Push"

for plausible deniability.

Honestly I think that if he lost the election, and was incarcerated even under home arrest with no access to his fans, he would more or less immediately become irrelevant, and he would grow frail very quickly.

Imagine how miserable that would be for him. His own personal hell.

This is the same guy who he insists he won in 2020 and is supposed to be sitting president now. By his logic, he's running for a third term.

He's also said that he will become a dictator on day one if he's elected this year. Why would he run in 2028 if he abolishes elections or makes a loophole to stay in the White House?

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 38 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Considering his mental decline in the last four years, in 2028, he will only be able to get on a stage and shit himself. And people will still vote for him.

What's interesting to me is that he seemed to acknowledge the possibility of failing at all. And that he didn't organize the answer around "if the election is stolen" or something. This is unlike him.

This answer was almost human.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 29 points 5 days ago

Trump says a lot of things.

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 21 points 5 days ago

He'd be 82, and the implication is that the country would have just had 4 years of a relatively young, female President.

He doesn't sound like a viable candidate at all in that scenario. (Not that he's a viable candidate now and they still ran him, so I guess all bets are off anyway)

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

If he weren't lying I'd be ecstatic right now. Although the laws of human mortality may prove him a truth teller for once in his life.

[–] 800XL@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Ya'll are missing the point. He doesn't see it because he doesn't see any more elections in the future. He isn't talking about being successful at winning the 2024 election, he's talking about successfully executing a coup.

[–] JustARaccoon@lemmy.world 27 points 5 days ago

So he's signaling his potential supporters "it's now or never"... again.

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

He's good. Just collecting enough money 😄💰 for the various playoffs he needs to do and for his one way ticket to the caiman islands.

Ha! I remember something about Biden being a one-term president as well. What do you bet donnie will try again, see the horrible ratings and poll numbers, and drop out? He wasn't able to be the first charismatic fascist dictator (even his idol wasn't, aye?), and he won't be able to help but follow the tracks laid out by his better.

[–] xantoxis@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

That's what he said last time. Only two things will actually stop him: the death of the Republican Party or his own

[–] splount@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago

Let's leave that up to the states.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Speaking of... The guy who hired the truck with 'LOSER' emblazoned on its side to patrol the white house in 2019, how do I get in on that action this time round, say, in Florida?

[–] ouRKaoS 16 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'd much rather chip in to get a billboard that says "Ha Hah!" That's visible from his prison cell.
