Specifically it was chocolate-flavored soy milk. I figured that would be "safer".

The experience of drinking the soy milk went roughly like so:

[pours the milk]

"Hmm. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, but it looks ever so slightly opaque compared to dairy milk..."

[gives it a good sniff]

"...It smells like basically nothing. Just as I like it!"

[tastes it]

...

...

...

"...Yeah??? OK! I can fuck with that!"

[puts glass down]

"Well, it feels somewhat watered down, yet also a bit saccharine; and the chocolate flavor is clearly different from what I'm used to; but on the whole it's not bad, it's just different, and 'different' is exactly what I was expecting. Really, as a whole this milk is largely indistinguishable from a different brand of dairy chocolate milk I've had previously."

[gulps down the rest of the glass]

"I mean, you know, it's not like the flavor on its own is preferable to what I'm already used to — God knows this costs a bit more as well — but I would gladly only drink chocolate milk that tastes slightly 'off' if it means less animal abuse. This hardly counts as any sort of sacrifice."

[drinks two more glasses]

"Honestly, I take back what I said, this is just good. Why on Earth isn't this just the standard milk already‽ Why was this stuff just hidden away in some random corner of the grocery store, where I nearly missed it completely‽ I mean I know the answer already, I'm just saying it's messed up..."

Almond is my favorite non dairy milk, no I don't care that it's milk flavored vitamin water.

Very cool and pleased for you! I'd argue the reason it's not the standard is that it's just not pleasant to many.

I'll drink oat milk all day any day, I've tried soy milk so many times wanting to like it, and I simply can't finish it.

Well, really, I'm more just thinking about plant-based milk in general being the standard. I would like to try other types of plant-based milk for comparison.

Now that I drink plant milks I can't stand a plain cup of dairy milk. To think that, when I was a kid, an authority figure tried to make me drink 3 whole-ass cups a DAY. The douche made me feel like a bad kid for not doing it.

Yes! Plus, it doesn't spoil as fast. It's more deserving of our trust. Oat milk too and it's cheaper then soy where I live. I now mostly remember cow milk for the bad taste when it spoils or when you pour spoiled milk on your cereal and have to trash it. Don't miss it at all. Glad to be rid of it even. Though I know it's a privilege with how heavily subsidized cow milk is. If it weren't for that, the alternatives would be cheaper. Also, I like cows, but/and it's weird to think where their milk has been.

You can get unsweetened and sweetened versions of pretty much any plant-based milk tbh (the sweetened kind is just more common for soy)

try the plain "soy beverage" labeled ones from asian markets or order it fresh from a chinese breakfast place if there's a chinatown around you. Western formulated soy milk tends to either be gooey because of additives or watery without them if organic.

Yeah soy milk is great, probably my favourite, but beware that taste can vary wildly between brands, some are fantastic, others are very meh

Soy Milk is probably my favorite milk, with oat being a close second. Tasted it, was shocked with how good it was, and wondered how it wasn't more popular.

Cheers, admittedly as a kid my fam always bought both so I consider it somewhat of a different drink than cow's. Same with almond, etc... But it's damn good no? Honestly even tends to be better :D soy-cutie

Hot take, but cow's milk is only better IMO in regards to its many uses, and I suppose with cereal.

The large issue with a lot of plant based milks is that they use vegetable fat/oil to up the fat content, and once you taste/notice it, at least in my experience, it feels like you're drinking a bunch of canola oil, which is unsettling. The oil can also seperate/split/de-emulsify when being heated, which is not ideal. Soy milk is the most prone to splitting out of all the plant milks, which is why products like oat milk and almond milk are becoming more popular.
