Canada’s gonna swing the same way next year so you’re not really escaping from anything anyways

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Already swung super anti-immigration as of earlier this year, so the move to Canada plan isn't going to be as easy either

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago

But I’m one of the good ones!

Yeah the Trump win is only gonna help conservatives..I really hate them and their leader, but Trudeau has shit the bed for so long that people are just sick of him

[–] Phil_in_here@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago (3 children)

The Liberals are admittedly a stale 3 day old cheap deli sandwich. People want something warm, fresh, and organic. Conservatives check all of those boxes.

Too bad it's horseshit.

It's not much better over here anyways, anti trans laws and oil industry dick sucking is ramping up more than ever.

To be fair, other countries want US citizens even less than the US wants* immigrants.

Do people actually think that the US is alone in anti-immigration sentiment? Do they think it’s different because they’re American?

The US is the one with a giant monument to immigration, at whose feet is a plaque that reads:

Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

And if they, of all people, are now against that, what makes Americans think anyone else will want them? It’s delusional.

Many countries shut down immigration to Americans in 2016, after the first round of trump’s policies, and they haven’t opened back up yet, partly because there was a solid chance of this happening again.

???

It's easy as piss to emigrate from America as long as you:

Are white, middle class, not provably disabled, not gay, with no criminal history, with at least one million in assets, as long as you don't have a history of activism, already are hired by a local company, and have a STEM degree.

See?

Easy.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I checked out Canadian requirements. The first stage of screening asks your name, email and year of birth - which only goes back to 1970. So apparently I'm too old.

[–] Starbuncle@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago

That number specifically indicates that they're probably using a positive integer amount of seconds since the epoch (jan 1st, 1970). Rookie mistake.

Hey, that’s not entirely fair. Russia is more than happy to accept Americans, so long as they’re willing to be cannon fodder for a while. I’m pretty sure they’re not even putting an age limit on it. If you survive, you may even get a small flat afterwards. And if you don’t, they may give your parents money for a Lada (providing they were Russian citizens already).

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

IMO any American who wants to emigrate to Russia is welcome to become topsoil in Ukraine.

Well, then kick him out. Or maybe guillotine him out, so that he doesn't return.

Like, if people were actually that irked that he won, they'd be doing something. But no, from what I hear El Trumpo actually won the popular vote: the US wants to be fascist. Maybe Canada too. (No, not as in the US wants to be Canada... although that'd be an improvement...)

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 25 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I’m concerned that there is no doubt this is what America wants.

I love the assumption that other countries would just take American emigrants.

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's a shit ton harder than people realize.... well at least to go anywhere in the industrialized world. Unless you are independently wealthy or have an extremely high demand job.

Billy Bob who's career is working at McDonalds isn't going to get approved.

You can outlive this. There's a good chance he can't. Be strong, and look out for those more vulnerable than yourself.

[–] Aeri@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

My concern is that the train is still running at full speed even if the driver has died of a heart attack.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I've been looking for silver linings. The two I've found are:

  1. Trump probably won't live to see the end of his term. Dude is old and not exactly healthy. One could argue Vance taking his place would be worse, but I'm choosing to focus on the positives here.

  2. Trump winning very likely prevented a civil war. I know a ton of people who had been stocking up on supplies and weapons. Again, one could argue giving these people the keys to the kingdom probably wasn't the smartest move, but again I'm trying to focus on the positives.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I think he's the devil and he'll never die. I wouldn't count on him dying. In my experience really poisonous people live a long time.

[–] RangerJosie@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He is basically line for line the biblical antichrist. That's infinitely funny to me.

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

this is honestly the thing that's getting me to question my atheism.

[–] Kalothar@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

I mean the Antichrist loses so you go that going for you I guess

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

Hey, quit shitting on my silver lining. I choose to believe he'll die soon due to Macdonald's induced heart failure and you can't take that hope away from me!

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

It's not like there was an assassination attempt during his rise to power and he survived with a headwound or anything like that, right?

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 week ago

Agreed on both points. The second means today is safer although Project 2025 spells danger ahead.

As for Trump, his physical deterioration and dementia and just general chaos of intentions are more of a check on him accomplishing evil than anything legal or political. When he runs the economy completely off the rails will it spark anything in the midterms? Will his Cabinet change every week? How long until he "never met" Elon?

So we draw breath, and persevere.

[–] Rolder@reddthat.com 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Maybe the left will start the civil war. Then again, they wouldn’t even get out to vote, so.

Stay strong people! ~~We~~ Most of us* survived the last Trump presidency, we got this.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 66 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Gaza won't survive. Ukraine likely won't survive.

American democracy's survival is questionable at best.

I'm not saying 'give up'. But we also have to recognize the magnitude of the impact this election is going to have. And many people who stay here despite everything are going to have their lives at risk.

[–] aida@lemm.ee 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

in simple words. We're fucked.

Canada is just america but 5-10 years behind on the crazy policies. It really isn't any better and cost of living is often higher than in america.

Immigration in most developed countries is stricter than the US. And we all know the US's immigration restrictions are insane.

Don't worry. He'll be coming for Canada. You already have MAGA lovers up there. Who's going to stop him? The Canadian military?

[–] HRDS_654@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

It already well on it's way depending on your province. People have moved out of Quebec because of the intolerance going on there. Hell, I know a streamer who moved because someone threw a fucking brick through their window at his wife who moved there from the USA. Not because she's black or colored either, because she's white as a piece of paper.

Don't come to Canada. We don't have enough housing for the people already here. Most of you will die of exposure during your first winter here.

Go to Mexico instead. I'm sure they'll take you.

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 7 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Well with Trump in power, factoring in the accelerated climate change ppl may be ok in winter.
