Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Low-value crop like wheat

Normal people call it “food”.

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 31 points 6 days ago

Well I don't make money off of Afghans not starving now do I?

There’s not a lot of money in food though…you can have an oil well or a drug farm.

good god, I could not make it beyond one of the first bullet points. basically, one of them implied that the ban on poppies will not improve rural poverty.

because everybody knows how rich rural communities get when the land there is used to grow crops with high value exclusively for export market channels controlled by cartels, gangsters, corrupt institutions, and powerful multinationals.

Illegal drug production is down to be replaced with growing food...

... but at what cost!

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 30 points 6 days ago

Completely imperialism brained to the point they ignore the value of growing food cause it has a lesser export value. You should be growing poppies to sell to drug dealers and then using that money to buy food that was farmed somewhere else, just growing food and eating it has become alien to these ghouls.

"institute of peace" confirmed CIA front

[–] Grapho@lemmy.ml 8 points 6 days ago

If it has peace or freedom in the name, it's probably a front

Gotham's economy has plummeted since the Batman banned the Penguin from growing Bliss.

There is a reason for the massive increase of opioid use in both Canada and US during amerikkka 's occupation of Afghanistan after all.

Funny, I can't find one use of the word 'sanctions' in the post.

Conversely the near famine in 2022 was averted by Afghanistan skirting the OFAC via something called the hawala system: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07393148.2024.2339127

Maybe if the people writing and falling for this article care about the Afghan population they should push for an end to the sanctions.

Such a great article to share with libs to help them see what their economic ideology leads to.

Maybe people wouldn't need to grow more food if it was equitably distributed, instead of thrown away?

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 6 days ago

It's always depressing to think about the sheer volume of food we throw away in the west. Especially considering that some of the critical fertilizer ingredients, such as phosphorus, are in finite supply. https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/what-phosphorus-and-why-are-concerns-mounting-about-its-environmental-impact
