"The traitor: Degradation of Alfred Dreyfus, degradation in the Morland Court of the military school in Paris"

The Dreyfus affair (French: affaire Dreyfus) was a political scandal that divided the Third French Republic from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. The scandal began in December 1894 when Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a 35-year-old Alsatian French artillery officer of Jewish descent, was wrongfully convicted of treason for communicating French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and sent overseas to the penal colony on Devil's Island in French Guiana, where he spent the following five years imprisoned in very harsh conditions.

In 1896, evidence came to light—primarily through the investigations of Lieutenant Colonel Georges Picquart, head of counter-espionage—which identified the real culprit as a French Army Major named Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy. High-ranking military officials suppressed the new evidence, and a military court unanimously acquitted Esterhazy after a trial lasting only two days. The Army laid additional charges against Dreyfus, based on forged documents. Subsequently, writer Émile Zola's open letter J'Accuse...! in the newspaper L'Aurore stoked a growing movement of political support for Dreyfus, putting pressure on the government to reopen the case.

In 1899, Dreyfus was returned to France for another trial. The intense political and judicial scandal that ensued divided French society between those who supported Dreyfus, the "Dreyfusards" such as Sarah Bernhardt, Anatole France, Charles Péguy, Henri Poincaré and Georges Clemenceau; and those who condemned him, the "anti-Dreyfusards" such as Édouard Drumont, the director and publisher of the antisemitic newspaper La Libre Parole. The new trial resulted in another conviction and a 10-year sentence, but Dreyfus was pardoned and released. In 1906, Dreyfus was exonerated. After being reinstated as a major in the French Army, he served during the whole of World War I, ending his service with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He died in 1935.

The Dreyfus affair came to symbolise modern injustice in the Francophone world; it remains one of the most notable examples of a miscarriage of justice and of antisemitism. The affair divided France into pro-republican, anticlerical Dreyfusards and pro-Army, mostly Catholic anti-Dreyfusards, embittering French politics and encouraging radicalisation. The press played a crucial role in exposing information and in shaping and expressing public opinion on both sides of the conflict.

My ADHD character trait is that every time someone asks me a question while I'm in the middle of something at work I lose 1 energy. I'm currently at like -200 energy for the day and half of that has originated from one person.

Wanna hear a story that will make you hate the bourgeoisie even more? Warning: Serious proletariat moment ahead.

spoilerMy family is part of the 1% (not the 0,1% tho) so I have a lot of these stories, but this is the most radicalizing one: My dad was talking about a guy he worked with who recently bought a home in the most expensive part of Munich for upwards of 5 Million Euros. One day his 10-year-old daughter asks him "Daddy, are we poor?" and the guy was confused by the question, so he asks why she would think that.

The daughter says that out of all the kids in the neighborhood, her dad is the only one who has to go to work every morning.

jokerfied

This sounds like a story made up by a communist but no, my bourgeois corporate executive father told it to me. He just thought it was a funny anecdote.

vagueposting because I don't have a therapist and am wishing I still had one right now.   partner has been commenting on a lack of intimacy (non-sexual), and wanted me to open up and share something about myself that I was keeping private because I'm not really at peace with it and I find it quite shameful. I finally did share and they were deeply troubled, slept in a different bed, and the next day "we really need to talk about this" agony-deep

it's hard to not feel like their reaction validated my reluctance, making me less likely to be open and vulnerable. Which would be the opposite of the intended effect.

Will also be fun to see what college gives her some makework "job", so she'll have something to do for the next 2.5 years

"Watching Adam Friedland in the Adam Friedland Show made me like Jewish people again,” Ye wrote alongside a poster for the podcast, which also starred Nick Mullen. “No one should take anger against one or two individuals and transform that into hatred towards millions of innocent people.”

The rapper added, “No Cumtown fan can be labeled antisemite knowing Adam is Jew. Thank you Adam Friedland I love you.”

Binge watching Columbo. Damn did men really touch strange women so often in the 70s? Like a woman sighs and some dude will just squeeze her shoulder to comfort her. The only woman or girl I touch in 2024 is my partner.

Okay, so the dialectic between the mechanical and electrical is a running thing in twin peaks and injustice now realized that Gordon Cole uses a hearing aide. And while I don't wanna be ableist, David Lynch who plays him isn't deaf so I can read into this. His auditory sense is dependent on an electronic device and everything he heard is moderated by electricity. That's gotta mean something.

Hadn't watched movies in a while. Finally got around to watching Thirst (dir. Park Chan Wook). It's great! Would recommend, fun take on vampires and uses the concept to explore a lot of interesting themes beyond just the usual good overcoming evil. Now I just have to see Stoker and I'll be done with his whole filmography. Truly the best to ever do it.

idk journalpostingHaving the realisation that I maybe actually just don't want to eat around my relatives anymore. There's probably too much lingering there from having been a "slow and picky" eater as a child. It's not actively distressing to me when I'm there, but... I do come away with zero fuckin spoons every time. I dunno.

I find I want a lot of space from my family actually. I do not hate them but even this amount of remove, living in my own place with my partner, away from them, isn't really enough I guess. If they didn't treat me exactly like when I was 15, maybe I'd be more normal about it...

South Korean capitalism is so interesting. "Accountability" is held frequently but power is given right back to the capitalist class nonetheless and it just cycles over and over.

Anyone know any good sources about it or any perspectives from the south Korean left ? Preferably in the modern era but I'll take anything

There is a book about the Dreyfus affair in Polish which i DON'T recommend: "Sprawa Dreyfusa. Ostrzeżenie sprzed wieku." by Michał Horoszewicz. 232 pages and there's not even a description of the affair itself. You can only vaguely get to know what happened from the brief timeline at the end. Half of the book is empty moralisations and the other half stretched and unconvincing attempt to whitewash catholic church from the participation in general antisemitism of the period.
