I'm wondering if anyone out there plays games the same way I do. Most people approach the hobby normally like play a few games on rotation with friends or to pass the time. What I do is play hundreds of games to completion then for some reason memorise each and every one, learn about all the differences between the ports, the game engine tech it runs on, all the bugs and speed running strats and index it in my head for instant recall.

Why I'm like this I do not know, something to do with making soul reaver my personality when I was a kid which was funny cos nobody knew wtf i was talking about cos other kids were playing gta and lego games.

Any other oddballs like me?

I wish i did. All the games I want to obsess over take up too much time and energy

This is a pretty common mega man fan experience I fear. I have a novelty buster arm on my desk and I am trying to find one of those helmets cheap on ebay

Uh, can confirm.

For me it's the classic series and especially the Star Force series, specifically. I've recently got an official Star Force artbook, secondhand because this stuff barely makes its way to Europe.

I never got into star force as much as battle network. I feel like star force was a better game but the network had a cleaner battle system. I have a buddy that is a legends fan. He is fucked.

Battle Network vs. Star Force often gets summarised as "BN has better gameplay, SF has better story". I've talked elsewhere in this thread about how much the first Star Force game's story means to me, but its gameplay is quite basic. The second game makes adjustments that are hit-or-miss and the story got notably worse. Star Force 3 has the most fleshed-out gameplay and is considered the best game overall, although I think the first game still has a better and more meaningful story. Some say SF3 is on par or even beats the best of Battle Network, but I can't make those judgements myself yet.

Poor Volnutt stuck on the Moon... I tend to view the whole franchise as a family, so I feel solidarity with fans of other sub-series because our favourite series are related and share the same struggles.

Yeah, thr more I hear about the story of mega man the more I realized shit's fucked. I am kinda confused that no one has stepped up to claim the space though. Without inafune's vibes the games should be cheap and popular enough to justify some indy releases

Sonic the Hedgehog

It's not really the same, but I tend to play a single game at a time until I've exhausted its in game secrets or got bored of its story/gameplay, and if I exhausted its secrets I'll go looking for the most similar games I can find. I only have a very passing interest in bugs and speed running, and no particular interest in game engines, so I don't seek that information out, but I will memorise story details, hidden gameplay mechanics, ability interactions, that kind of stuff. Most of the games I own probably have less than 10 hours played because they didn't interest me or hold my attention, but the ones that did have hundreds of hours - Tactics: Ogre Reborn, Hades, the Owlcat games, and Warframe (again) over the last 5 or so years.

Same, I will get into a game and just keep going until I’m bored or if I didn’t like it, beat the final boss and never open it up again.

For example I just beat Pokemon Sword and the story was meh, but a lot of it was boring and reeked of the expectation you would buy the DLC. Making curry was kind of fun the first couple times and felt like genuinely good worldbuilding to see non-pokemon centered things in the Pokémon world, but then they added whipped cream to curry. Fuck that I’ll just juggle between coconut curry and potato curry like a normal person.

when i read the title i thought, yes that's me, but then i read the post that's a big nope from me.

i was thinking more along the lines of i download and play hundreds of games, but mostly just for a few minutes or a couple hours, then i delete them and forget them forever

niche videogame knowledge occupies every single open space inside my skull

i am autistic about videogames as fuck, honestly seeing this post made me very excited that someone is like me to the point of shutting my brain off

The next test is to see if you can beat my guessthegame score. I'd do more but it got boring after a while

I waa showing my brother some of the ones i did first guess and one of them i showed him i thought he'd get cos we played that level in halo 2 like a few days ago. He did not memorise the wall texture of the stone buildings on delta halo kitty-birthday-sad

impressive memory honestly!

i havent yet played any halo games lol, been meaning to get a used xbox, then MCC came out and i lost interest, then Halo Refined made waves and then i forgor abt it 💀

i tend to subconsiously memorize the most random of trivia about videogames, even games that i dont like, i dont even think about it most of the time and then someone randomly asks me and i write a light novel

I have done nothing but play minecraft for the past month

[–] RangeFourHarry@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

Nope not yet; on the upswing for falling back into Hunt Showdown and deep into flesh and blood (but that’s not quite a vidya game)

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

I like the Kirby and Mega Man franchises and can whip up lots of trivia about each at a moment's notice. Two years ago, the Mega Man Star Force series and its main character Geo's progression out of loneliness and anxiety struck a lot of emotional chords with me on a deeply personal level. As a result, that series has practically become my identity as it sits very close to the heart. Geo unironically is a role model for me.

You are me when I was a kid. I even got angry when my brother couldn't remember the controls or what exactly you are supposed to do in every Chicken Little stage.

I got a bit more normal when I aged (I still know where all important stuff is in every Dark Souls)

[–] Gorb@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

I did do my part of being normal and now I'm entering midlife crisis and been playing all the singleplayer games I've had on my backlog. Already completed 7 games this year, didn't do much last year because i got back into mmo's and was playing basically all of them at the same time

I've picked a couple games from the late 90s early 2000s like Majora's Mask and pokemon to learn all about the beta content, game engine, and speed runs. I listen to all sorts of piano and orchestral remixes of the OST. There's like a million Dire Dire Docks remixes

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 2 points 3 days ago

I don't do it to that degree, but I do wonder sometimes how much space in my brain is taken up by obscure Binding of Isaac knowledge
