Alexandra Kollontai, born on this day in 1872, was a Marxist feminist revolutionary who served as People's Commissar for Social Welfare in the Soviet Union and, later in life, as a diplomat for the USSR abroad.

Alexandra was born into a wealthy family of Ukrainian, Russian, and Finnish background, acquiring a fluency in both Russian and Finnish early on. This experience would later assist her in her career as a Soviet diplomat.

In 1895, Kollontai read August Bebel's "Woman and Socialism", which was a major influence on her thinking. In 1896, she helped fundraise in support of a mass textile strike in St. Petersburg, retaining connections with the women textile workers of St. Petersburg for the rest of her career.

In the years leading up to 1917, Kollontai was active as a Marxist theoretician, educator, and anti-war activist (opposing World War I, specifically). During this time, she established contact with Vladimir Lenin and gave a lengthy speaking tour in the U.S., sharing a stage with Eugene V. Debs and giving 123 speeches in 4 languages.

Following the 1917 February Revolution, Kollontai returned to Russia. Later that year, she voted in favor of the decision to launch an armed uprising against the government, also participating in the revolt. At the Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets, she was elected Commissar of Social Welfare in the new Soviet government.

The Encyclopedia of Women's Autobiography describes her efforts within the Soviet government: "The changes that Kollontai tried to bring about were enormous, involving the complete destruction of the old system and the creation of a new one...Kollontai authorized decrees that committed the Soviet State to full funding of maternity care from conception through the first year of a child's life - an unheard of measure for the beginning of the 20th century. She attempted to establish full legal, political, and sexual equality for women and to redress the entire marriage code."

In 1920, Kollontai joined the left "Workers' Opposition", an opposition tendency in the Bolshevik Party opposed to what they saw as the increasing bureaucratization of the Soviet state. In March 1921, the Workers' Opposition was banned along with all other factions at the 10th party congress in March 1921, but its members continued to be active as leaders of both the Bolshevik Party and the Soviets.

In 1922, Kollontai was one of the signers of the "Letter of the 22" to the Communist International, protesting the banning of factions in Russia.

Following this incident, Kollontai began to serve as a Soviet diplomat, becoming one of the first women to work in international diplomacy. As ambassador to Norway and Sweden, as a trade delegate to Mexico, as a delegate to the League of Nations, and as negotiator of the Finno-Soviet peace treaty of 1940, she served the USSR with what was generally regarded as great finesse. From 1946 until her death in 1952, she was an advisor to the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"Class instinct...always shows itself to be more powerful than the noble enthusiasms of 'above-class' politics. So long as the bourgeois women and their [proletarian] 'younger sisters' are equal in their inequality, the former can, with complete sincerity, make great efforts to defend the general interests of women.

But once the barrier is down and the bourgeois women have received access to political activity, the recent defenders of the 'rights of all women' become enthusiastic defenders of the privileges of their class, content to leave the younger sisters with no rights at all. Thus, when the feminists talk to working women about the need for a common struggle to realise some 'general women's' principle, women of the working class are naturally distrustful."

Funny to think that my first step towards becoming a communist was just...being a baby raised by liberals and taking what they said seriously. Be kind, share. Treat others how you want them to treat you. You can't put a price on the beauty of nature. Things like that. Then you grow up and they're like "Just kidding, go get a job. I hear the orphan crushing factory is hiring."

Was going down a late 90s/early 2000s fansite rabbit hole and found a hentai-free variant in the wild:

A still image of Jessie and James from the PokΓ©mon anime shown from the waist up. Jessie is sporting a black bandeau bikini top while James has an orange string bikini top showing off his ample (inflatable) breasts (see episode 18 "Beauty and the Beach" for more info). The caption reads, "We may have done some strange things before, but we've never done any of that! This site is: Hentai-Free!"

Really brings me back!

I keep seeing libs on Twitter post some variation of "we had to go through Hoover to get FDR."

Brother, I see no reason to believe anyone is coming to save us. I expect that on the other side of this is the gaping maw of hell itself.

Best case scenario is that within twenty years the power of the fed has collapsed to the point where it is largely a token government and the majority of Americans, meaning me and you, Brother, live in the squalor and poverty that our government forced upon much of the rest of the world, squatting in the decaying remains of empire.

Worst case scenario, global thermonuclear holocaust destroys all mankind, and quite possibly life on Earth.

It's also putting too much of a great man of history spin on what happened. FDR only was FDR because he was reacting to organized labour of his day. If labour was disorganized there would be no new deal

Conservatives are trying to do another "trans women in sports" drama, this time with fencing.

A fencer very performatively refused to compete against a trans woman and was DQd for it. She went as far as to hook up her uniform before making a scene.

Thing is, fencing is one of the most trans-friendly sports there is. Most low-level bouts are coed and in higher levels trans athletes just need to be on HRT for like a year. Men and women tend to fence differently, but the skill gap is very small and the community by and large has been moving towards more inclusivity. The consensus seems to be that yes, that is behavior deserving of a black card.

So transphobes are getting mad, but the fencing community recognizes how stupid this all is. We've already figured out how we deal with trans athletes. The outrage is entirely from outsiders.

Also, the transphobic fencer recently competed in an open competition. Against men. So it's not a "men in women's sport thing". It's PURELY transphobia.

I picked the right sport in college.

Came back because I need non-liberals in my life to talk to about the world and stuff. They're driving me crazy. It's like talking to evil children. Every single point is them going "that's just how the world is" in some way or another. Or like, little untrue factoids and establishment rhetoric from tv or social media. No actual analysis or curiosity.

(Site tagline)

The number of animal themed users combined with the love of authoritarian communism made me feel like I'd just walked onto the set of George Orwell's Animal Farm. On this site, where all users are equal, one of the "more equal" parties with the power to ban whoever they liked, became disillusioned with their authority and walked away, taking the keys to the site with them. Without their leader, the users became distraught and directionless, hidden behind a thin veneer of ironic detachment, as the various barnyard animals ran amok in confusion - a fate all too common among those who attempt to follow Marx's sinister call to "lose one's chains."

theory-gary "The animals run amok in confusion as destined by their folly"

I haven't met a lib who doesn't devolve into speaking in tongues when being anti-communist.

I got a haircut and shaved about a week ago and I think management is spooked that I'm taking interviews elsewhere. My boss told me they're hiring a new person for my department and one of the VPs is dangling a promotion in front of me (not an offer though... just a thing that could theoretically happen in the future). I should have done this months ago lmao.

One thing I love about disco elysium is how the magical realism is not that far from our world. The pale is bizarre and unknowable, but so is our world. So is outer space and quantum physics. Plenty of stuff in our real world would be rich, high-concept sci-fi if it wasn't real. Idk it just reminds me that our world is so mysterious

For a few minutes this morning - I talked to an elderly person. In my head I said to myself "Hope, hope, hope, hope - I hope she doesn't want to talk about Social Security." We exchanged pleasantries for about 30 seconds and then she said "I'm worried about Social Security." I did my best to have smile in my voice as I said stuff like "I hope everything works out." I didn't want to make her feel bad by telling her what I actually think but I also didn't want to lie.

Mussolini is such a funny historical figure because he starts off with ludicrous projects and ideas that are completely unrealistic and that is literally the only thing he is even close to succeeding at, but basic shit like "having enough guns/foods/fuel" was totally beyond him even in peace time and he ended up inventing quantitative easing and creating a more state owned economy than the soviets trying to do basic corruption.

Yes sir I done did got rid of malaria, but also I invested 3000000% of the country's budget in a bicycle shop in Florence run by a man who due to his futurist beliefs opposes the use of wheels.

I like it when older books use the term "bisexual" to mean "something that is for both men and women", because so often it also makes sense with the modern meaning of the word. Like, you are so right mr. Hobsbawm, tennis and skating are bisexual sports.

Something that frustrates me about technology in general, but recently specficially with the discussion about AI, is that "AI taking our jobs" should be a good thing. In a sane world, workers being replaced by machines should mean there is less work to be done and more time for the average person to do what they enjoy. But no, in our world, it just means the bourgeoisie can cut costs and the peasants have to compete over who gets to sell their labor and who gets to starve.
