Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.

And, as we're on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Swear I thought that SLS died years ago. How the hell was it still around?

You may be thinking of the Constellation program, which was a different iteration of the same basic bad idea (making shitty overpriced rockets out of leftover Shuttle parts) with a different regime's name attached. (Constellation was the Bush II regime's project, SLS was the Obama regime's)

The prime minister of portugal, Luis Montenegro, doesn't know how to play rock-paper-scissors, he doesn't know what it is, ele não sabe.

In an interview with a podcaster he was asked to play RPS, and when the guy start saying "rock paper scissors" the PM asked whether he was supposed to tell him to stop. Then the guy tried explaining RPS to him and the PM waved his hand and yelled "Go Scissors". Then an aide came from off camera to show the PM how to play RPS to which he replied that the game "was something his children did".

He's 52.

Here's the clip (warning, the link leads you to reddit-logo/portugal where these libs still have the slava ukraini banner on the sub)

I do hate how there’s no universal consensus on whether you chose your option on “scissors” or the fourth beat after scissors

[–] uSSRI@hexbear.net 22 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Standardize throwing on 4! The split seconds between scissors and shoot/whatever is used for 4th beat is where I do my best strategizing

[–] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 16 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I grew up being taught you do it on 3rd beat :-/

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 8 points 11 hours ago

Mine was sci-ssors pa-per rock, reveal on rock. It's easy because rock is one syllable so easy to say and sync

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 22 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Right hand to God if you made me play RPS right now I'm sure I would screw it up because it does involve pretty quick thinking and fine motor function.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 20 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

just throw rock every time, can't lose.

I might not have gotten the point across, when watching the video it's not that he doesn't know HOW to play RPS or what the timing was, he actually didn't even what it was

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 23 points 16 hours ago

To quote Northernlion when asked about his problems with Civilization: "At 17, nothing much. But now? Brother, I'm not sure I believe in the concept"

Maybe RPS is bourgeois.

Are the wildfires in Israel over already? That'd be a fucking shame.

Still praying for more disasters to strike Israel. Even funnier is if they're all self-inflicted.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 39 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Seeing the foreign aid they'll likely get to help deal with the fires vs the lack of aid gaza is getting is gonna be my villain arc atp

[–] refolde@hexbear.net 30 points 16 hours ago

I'm imagining countries who won't lift a finger to help Gaza or pressure Israel to stop their genocide will suddenly go all in and even strain their own economies on a coordinated effort to help Israel.

If that happens then everything is a joke and every fucking society deserves to burn and be replaced with something else.

This is just like those headlines where the US military claims that China is "pulling ahead" so it can ask for $1 trillion more from Congress

[–] forcefemjdwon@hexbear.net 26 points 13 hours ago

Unfortunately it is possible to spin propaganda on objective facts as well, even though the US often prefers entirely fabricated pretenses.

when deepseek first released, it seemed miles ahead of chatGPT, but now i feel like chatGPT usually works better :(

[–] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 36 points 15 hours ago

The big jump with Deepseek honestly is the cost. Deepseek isn't like better than the cutting edge Western models, it's basically on par. The key is it cost 20 times less to train. Deepseek cost around $5 million, whilst gpt-4 was around $100 million.

Joint Israeli - US airstrikes currently taking place on Yemen, airstikes continue for the 52nd day and night in a row.

Daytime airstrikes by the US hit the following governorates:

Al Jawf:

  • Eight airstrikes hit Al-Hazm District early in the morning.
  • Seven airstrikes hit Al Hazm District in the evening.

Sana'a:

  • Three airstrikes hit the Al-Sawad area.

Nighttime airstrikes by Israel hit the following governorates, Israeli media says 30 aircraft were involved and over 50 munitions were used:

Hodeidah:

  • City of Hodeidah hit by multiple airstrikes.
  • Six to Eight airstrikes hit the Port of Hodeidah.
  • Four airstrikes hit a factory/production facility in Bajil District.

Nighttime airstrikes by the US Navy and Air Force hit the following governorates:

Sana'a:

  • multiple airstrikes on the Al-Sawad area again.

Warning for potential graphic imagery during ongoing airstrikes:

The IOF/IDF has released images of the planes that participated in the operation. An Israeli F-15I is seen carrying 5 2000lb GBU-31 JDAM stand in GPS guided bombs, along with conformal and external fuel tanks. 10 of these planes = 50 bombs. The rest of the Israeli aircraft would have been support assets like mid air refueling aircraft, AWACS aircraft, and reconnaissance aircraft/drones. The use of stand in weapons like JDAMs for this attack is notable, as previous Israeli strikes on Yemen, such as those in December last year, used stand off munitions, including the Rampage air launched guided artillery rocket. Like the British a few days ago, the Israelis have taken advantage of the corridors the US Navy has opened in Yemen to carry out stand in strikes.

The corridors get opened by the EA-18G Growler Electronic Warfare and Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses aircraft (SEAD/DEAD). This is a picture of an EA-18G on the USS Harry Truman yesterday, May 4, in the standard heavy SEAD/DEAD loadout against for this conflict: 4 AGM-88E AARGM anti radiation missiles, 2 AIM-120 AMRAAM air to air missiles for taking out drones and air to air loitering munitions, and 3 480 Gal fuel tanks for increased range and loiter time over the battle space:

The EA-18G is an extremely important capability. Anyone going into conventional military conflict with the United States will need to counter it and/or develop their own analogue to it.

Delegates of fifty nations met at San Francisco between April 25 and June 26, 1945. Working on the Dumbarton Oaks proposals, the Yalta Agreement, and amendments proposed by various Governments, the Conference agreed upon the Charter of the United Nations and the Statute of the New International Court of Justice. The Charter was passed unanimously and signed by all the representatives. It came into force on October 24, 1945, when China, France, the USSR, the United Kingdom, and the United States and a majority of the other signatories had filed their instruments of ratification.

Most foreign airlines halt flights to Tel Aviv after ~~Houthi~~ Ansarallah missile hits airport

Major foreign airlines, including German carrier Lufthansa, France’s Air France, US carrier Delta and Hungary’s Wizz Air, on Sunday canceled their scheduled flights to Tel Aviv, after a ballistic missile from Yemen struck inside the grounds of Israel’s main airport, Ben Gurion International.

By Sunday late afternoon, only a few foreign airlines were still confirmed to be flying.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 39 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

There was someone in another thread on Lemmy ml that worked for Wizz air or knew people that worked for them according to their comments, so I wonder what they think of this news.

[–] smokeppb@hexbear.net 42 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

There are still lots of flights taking off and landing in tel aviv, just not airlines from other countries. There's still a long way to go before we get to closed airways.

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 43 points 20 hours ago

If you're living in Israel you've already tacitly agreed to a certain level of insecurity, I'm guessing it would take a huge amount of risk to stop internal Israeli air traffic.
