“Before the VAT increase, we’d have gone on around five holidays a year, including several long-haul trips,” he says. “In previous years, we’ve been to the US a few times and stayed in New York and travelled around, visiting the Hamptons, but now it’s mostly Europe and maybe one long-haul trip a year instead.”

Moy estimates they have cut their holiday spend from around £40,000 per year to £20,000.

it's tough out here

Their yearly trip budget is between one and three years of my wages.

Cool... cool.

$40,000 is more money than I've made in my entire life. Even when I was able to work, I think I only got around $15k each summer.

I thought the title was exaggerating things. But no, not only is it verbatim from the article, it’s actually understating things: they’re still going on five holidays, just to europe instead of the fucking hamptons

just to europe instead of the fucking hamptons

Rich people really have no taste, do they? They could go practically anywhere, do practically anything, and their ideal vacation spot is a place where they just stand around sniffing their own farts. They do that at home, why even go on holiday at all?

When your tightened belt reduced holiday spending still exceeds my yearly wage

Who is this article for? Who is outraged that the Moys can't take 5 vacations per year?

[–] sictransitgloria@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Moys probably is, as is the author and their ilk. it's mostly rage bait though I think

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

Even the Moys have more of a “thems the breaks” vibe in the article than being upset.

This article is for rubbing it in our faces.

If this wasn’t from the Torygraph I’d think this was an article mocking the bougies for acting all put upon because taxes now apply to the stuff rich people buy.

wow, can you imagine not being able to go on shopping trips to NYC and staying in the Hamptons less than 5 times a year.

damn, guess the Moy's should give up, kill themselves to bring an end to their miserable existence, and leave everything to the poor.

I do wonder why these articles get made.

Is it an attempt at sympathy? The rich are just so out of touch that 4 holidays a year is seen as a sacrifice equal to someone living paycheck to paycheck?

Is it a kind of humblebrag or rage bait, a kind of "fuck the poor" thing, where they are knowingly doing this, in order to show off how much wealth they still have?

Or is it a sort of "Leopards ate my face" thing or similar? Where this is the closest thing to "consequences" they've ever faced in their life and they're freaking out about it? They're upset that the government that was supposed to just be a money funnel directly into their pockets wasn't?
