What's that flag mean? It looks like it says "I'm an asshole", but I'm not quite sure.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago

The blue line is supposed to be the police protecting you from IDK black people and foreigners and other "troublesome" things. So for young rightwing losers, usually goes along with guns and fragile masculinity.

[–] sulgoth@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's a mark of support for police. Often used unironically beside the 'don't tread on me' snake.

[–] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What what what?!? The "Tread harder, daddy" snake is based on a real thing?!?

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 12 points 2 days ago

The Gadsden flag is based on the earlier Join or Die political cartoon. It is a symbol of the American Revolution, and it is generally understood to mean an opposition to state coercion.

Which makes it a direct contradiction to the "Blue Lives Matter" flag. The popularity of the combination of these two directly contradicting statements shows that conservatives are idiots who don't stand for anything. I call it the "Tread on them" combo.

Please tell me that you're joking.

Please tell me that the original meaning and intent of the Gadsden flag isn't completely lost on America's youth.

Some of us dirty foreigners have learned how to use the internet too, not everyone online is American.

Ah. The original treaders. Now it's making sense.

[–] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 6 points 2 days ago

Sorry, I'm not American, and I've likely only seen it on Lemmy, and likely in satirical forms.

Anyway, I've read the other linked info and a bit more, so at least feel I do know now :)

I'm also not a youth, but I'll absolutely take that as a compliment, thank you very much :D

In addition to what others have said, you can search for "thinn blue line" for more info on it. Basically meant to be on support of the kind of cops that killed George Floyed.

The same guy would gladly disobey the law if it stated to treat others with respect.

[–] III@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

The same guy would gladly disobey the law if he wanted to. To them, the law is for others.

This is one rare instance where "should of" would be correct

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Texas is not the whole USA

[–] kingpepe8006@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The man in the picture is wearing the same thing but its made of wool instead of leather cuz its cold af up in montana

be funny if he's also screaming "and Jesus was white!"

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 8 points 2 days ago

You can find this on the album Inside Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry was asked to give an example of network notes. For context, just know Gene was a Humanist. He framed The Bible as if it was the script for a television show. Everything pretty much would have been deemed inappropriate.

I know we tease people in modern times who would criticize Jesus of Nazareth for how he has been historically known, but it is wild how a religious text would not been deemed acceptable for 60s or 70s television.

If he didn’t want to get PITTED, he should have pulled over for the improper use of turn indicator!
