Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur (a little east of that deep red zone in the west of the megathread map), is the last major holdout of the Sudanese government in that state, and is currently under siege by the RSF. Losing it would be a significant blow to the SAF, though given how the conflict lines are shaping up, it seems increasingly plausible that there will be a de facto - if not de jure - partition of Sudan, unless the military situation substantially changes. This is because the RSF have been pushed out of central Sudan, while the SAF are being pushed out of Western Sudan - although, the situation is pretty complex and has been known to change rapidly before.

As has been a constant feature of the Sudan Civil War - perhaps the single worst humanitarian crisis on the planet right now when measured by numbers - the civilian situation pales in comparison to the military situation, with hundreds of thousands of children dead from famine, and tens of millions of people experiencing extreme food insecurity.

Al-Fashir has been the destination of many thousands of refugees fleeing genocide, and food and aid supplies into the town are being explicitly blocked by the RSF, resulting in scenes similar to what is happening in Gaza right now. The big difference is that fleeing from major battle zones is at least somewhat of an option, though people are often caught and robbed or enslaved or trafficked while moving to neighbouring towns and cities - and these cities are often experiencing similar conditions to places that refugees are leaving.

Ukraninan totalitarism video, from a Ukrainian in Kharkov translated by a Ukrainian in Mariupol, about how Ukrainian society devolved into decentralized totalitarianism. Minor brain worms detected, but my radar is not the best.

I don't know if it's old news or contradicted by analysis, but it presented to me a new perspective about how it's completely fucked. Instead of becoming a nazi regime that was "stabbed in the back", the complete lack of state authority appears to me will make it divided by militias fighting each other. And since western occupation to maintain stability threatens Russia, if it was affordable and possible in such a vast country, and since Russia couldn't possibly occupy it either, shit will be very bad.

Palestinian factions and groups condemned the strike on the Al-Jazeera journalist tent today at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, which resulted in the martyrdom of 7, including 5 journalists, among them Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Quraiqe and several photographers and cameramen. They universally decried the targeting and labeled it as a crime intended to silence the truth and conceal planned escalation.

🟢 Hamas condemned the brutal crime that "exceeds all boundaries of fascism and criminality" and mourned the journalists, who join a list of 260 journalists killed by the "Nazi occupation army in the widest targeting of journalists the world has ever witnessed." They highlighted that Anas and Mohammed received direct, repeated threats from the IOF beforehand. Hamas warned that assassinating journalists is a prelude to a "major crime the occupation plans to commit in Gaza City" by silencing its media voice to carry out massacres far from the world's eyes. It called on the UN Security Council and journalists worldwide to condemn the crime and take immediate action.

⚫️ The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine (PIJ) described the deliberate targeting as a "heinous war crime" committed by the "most brutal and criminal army in the world." The PIJ warned the international community that the attack confirms the occupation is "preparing the stage for its upcoming crimes" by eliminating the journalists who expose them. The movement asserted that this escalation proves the occupation's rejection of all efforts to reach a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal, holding Arab and Western governments responsible for failing to stop these atrocities.

🔴 The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine stated that the attack confirms "truth is a direct enemy of the occupation" and called it a full-fledged war crime. The PFLP views the assassination as a "dangerous indicator of the occupation's intention to commit the most heinous crimes in Gaza" after eliminating media coverage. It highlighted the hypocrisy of the occupation claiming to allow foreign press into Gaza while its "blood-soaked hands" executes a local press crew whose only weapon was a "microphone and a camera." The Front declared that international silence on such crimes constitutes a "partnership in the crime" and called on international press unions and human rights organizations to pursue accountability in international courts.

⚔️ The Popular Resistance Committees in Palestine (PRC) eulogized the journalists, calling Anas al-Sharif an "icon of Palestine" whose "work exposed the zionist holocaust." The Committees stated that the assassination exposes the lie of Netanyahu's propaganda and proves the "zionist entity fears the word, the image, the camera, and the pen." Pledging to continue on the path of the martyrs, the PRC affirmed that their struggle will continue until the "entity of murder, fascism, and zionist crime" is removed entirely.

🟨 Fatah al-Intifada mourned the "martyrs of truth," stating that the targeting of journalists is a "blatant violation of human rights and freedom of the press." The movement asserted that the primary goal of such attacks is to "blind the world to the crimes" and assassinate the witnesses documenting the "genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza." It called for international protection for media workers to ensure they can perform their duties in safety.

📝 The Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC) strongly condemned the heinous crime, noting that the assassination of Al Jazeera's correspondents came after months of "israeli" incitement against them. The Center called for an "independent and transparent international investigation" into the continuous targeting of journalists in Gaza to ensure accountability and an end to the "policy of impunity." It also demanded the international community provide "immediate and effective protection for Palestinian journalists."

The secret system Hamas uses to pay government salaries

After nearly two years of war, Hamas's military capability is severely weakened and its political leadership under intense pressure.

Yet, throughout the war Hamas has managed to continue to use a secret cash-based payment system to pay 30,000 civil servants' salaries totalling $7m (£5.3m).

[...]

One senior Hamas employee, who served in high positions and is familiar with Hamas's financial operations, told the BBC that the group had stockpiled approximately $700m in cash and hundreds of millions of shekels in underground tunnels prior to the group's deadly 7 October 2023 attack in southern Israel, which sparked the devastating Israeli military campaign.

The New York Times reports that Trump has ordered the Pentagon to draw up plans for military action against drug cartels classified as terrorist groups in Latin America. The newspaper says that incursions by the US armed forces could take place by land and sea. The report cites cartels in Mexico and Venezuela that have been classified as foreign terrorist groups by the US.

Colombian president Gustavo Petro on Twitter:

I publicly transmit my order, as commander of the armed forces of Colombia. Colombia and Venezuela are the same people, the same flag, the same history.

Any military operation that lacks the approval of our brother nations is an aggression against Latin America and the Caribbean. It is a fundamental contradiction to our principle of Liberty. Liberty or death—Bolívar's cry—and the people rose up.

Considering Trump's threats about using military force on Venezuela and Mexico, my understanding is that Petro is threatening to use the Colombian army as support for Venezuela's army in the event of military action from the US. How much support or how politically feasible this can be, I'm not sure, but I don't think he can do that much to support Venezuela in the event of US military action due to internal politics.

Still, I think it's a positive, if bold, move, and also I don't really think Venezuela needs much support in the event of military action. The Venezuelan people would absolutely rally around the flag in that event, since Venezuela's rhetoric has been consistently about US anti-imperialism, in a similar fashion to what you would hear from the DPRK.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), on Monday ordered the house arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro (Liberal Party). Moraes explained that he had failed to comply with the precautionary measures imposed on him for posting content on his children's social networks. In the decision, Moraes states that Bolsonaro used the social networks of allies to post messages with “clear content encouraging and instigating attacks on the Federal Supreme Court and ostensible support for foreign intervention in the Brazilian judiciary”.

“There is no doubt that the precautionary measure imposed on Jair Messias Bolsonaro was not complied with,” wrote Moraes. For the minister, the ex-president's actions, even without the direct use of his profiles, deliberately circumvented the restriction previously imposed. As a result, Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to serve house arrest at his home address.

The Telegraph: British tanks have got the Russians rattled

In Ukraine, donated Challenger 2s are holding up far better than anything Moscow has managed to build.

Grainy footage is circulating of a British-built Challenger 2 tank, donated to Ukraine 18 months ago, allegedly meeting its end in Kursk under fire from a Russian attack drone.

If this is true, this would likely be the second British tank destroyed over a period when Moscow is thought to have lost around 2,000 of its own. Perhaps this disparity in performance is why the Russians are so vexed by the handful of Challengers offered to Kyiv. The release of the footage is clutching at some very slippery straws to try and suggest the Russians are in the ascendency in Kursk.

(There are no more than 20 Challenger IIs in Ukrainian service, and they aren't used in the frontlines like the Abrams)

That is, if it’s accurate. To me, the footage smells “off”. First, the tank is in what we call a ‘hull up” position showing the whole vehicle to any attacker. Anybody who has any experience of armoured warfare will know you show as little of your tank as possible to the enemy, in what we call a “hull down” position. Very inexperienced tank crews could make this mistake, but the Ukrainians have been manning these Challengers for 18 months and only two have been badly damaged as far as we understand, suggesting that they know what they’re doing.

In the video (provided here, so you don't have to give that mf free clicks) the tank is just parked near some trees, it's not in combat. The FPV drone hunted it down like it usually does. Striking tanks while on the move or being engaged by your forces is not as common as it seems like. So the entire "MUH HULL DOWN POSITIUNNN" bit is pure copium.

Second, while the footage is low quality there doesn’t seem to be any additional armour on the tank. Again, the other Challenger 2’s we’ve seen in active duty in Ukraine have been kitted out with “explosive-reactive” armour or drone cages.

Third, the drone is attacking the strongest part of the tank, the frontal 60 degrees of the turret. None of the drones we’ve seen in Ukraine so far should really be able to damage armour of this thickness; usually attacks are characterised by the drone attempting to manoeuvre around the tank and hit it in the rear, or through an open turret.

The FPV drone operator aimed for the upper hull, near the driver's hatch. It's clearly visible in the video. He knows his audience is stupid so there goes, or maybe he is?

Finally, there’s no surveillance drone supporting the attack variant, capturing the moment of explosion and conducting battle-damage assessment. This is pretty suspect; usually we get footage from the support unit showing the devastating impact on the unfortunate vehicle in question. The lack of any such footage suggests that perhaps the drone might have been a “dud”, scratching the paintwork but doing little more harm.

cope

Frankly, without further evidence coming to light, my suspicions are that this footage is not quite what it’s purported to be; either less successful than claimed, or a propaganda con with the low quality of the footage helping to pass it off as genuine. On a personal level, I find it quite heartening that the Russians are so fixated with attempting to do down the Challenger 2: it shows that it’s holding up well in performance, quite likely better than anything they’ve managed to build.

Sure it has a significant propaganda value. We know Russia offers good rewards for those who destroy western equipment, but trying to spin it off as "Heh, they got our tank because they are jealous of us" is a bit weird. Imagine this: Britain heavily celebrated the sinking of the german battleship "Bismarck", in reality the battleship was pretty shitty compared to it's peers, and even if it wasn't destroyed it wouldn't have given Germany the victory, despite being able to oneshot HMS Hood. Imagine if Goebbels issued a statement like "Britain is so fixated on our battleship heh smuglord, joke's on them actually!". Pretty big L if you ask me.

If the footage is of a real vehicle, however, then it would appear that the Russians do have access to a genuine Challenger 2. This could be cause for concern as its successor – the imaginatively named Challenger 3 – is based on the same model, and there can be little doubt that Russian engineers will have stripped the captured unit down to its basics to learn whatever secrets they can.

Recent MoD briefs on the Challenger 3 suggest that it will be very different on a technical level, with new fire control systems and defensive aid suites. But this should surely be a wakeup call to the designers and engineers to take stock and re-evaluate their plans on the assumption that the Russians know more than we’d like them to. I have faith that this can be overcome; what Rheinmetall – the German manufacturer involved in the new build – doesn’t know about making tanks isn’t worth knowing!

Give War Thunder forums a few weeks and they'll release documents on "Challenger 3", another Wunderwaffe of theirs.

As I continue to work on my new book – tracing the development of tank warfare from Cambrai, the first tank battle, to Kursk today – it’s striking how fundamentally very little has changed. Just as the Germans were fixated by the MK4 tank in November 1917, so are the Russians with the Challenger 2 tank in 2024. I wouldn’t bet against the Challenger 3 continuing this noble lineage.

What fucking noble lineage lmfao

It's also important to point out that the Challenger 2 has a terrible record in Ukraine. Not only they are in the backline most of the time, but they also suffered losses without being able to inflict any upon the russians. It's abysmal. Leopard's record is mediocre at best in the war, but at least the vehicles are up there fighting and will, of course, take losses. However that british piece of junk...

Reuters: U.S. secures strategic transit corridor in Armenia-Azerbaijan peace deal

Trump will be hosting Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to sign a peace treaty that will establish a long-proposed Zangezur Corridor through Armenia, connecting Azerbaijan to its exclave Nakhchivan (and thus Turkey). The corridor will fall under Armenian law but will be operated by the US through private military contractors and private corporations. It will also seemingly be right along the Iranian border, both effectively cutting off Iran from it's only land route to Russia and giving the US yet another area of operation from which it can attack and infiltrate Iran.

China says it supports Brazil in resisting tariffs and protecting its rights. The Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi, told the special advisor to the Brazilian presidency, Ambassador Celso Amorim. China is Brazil's largest trading partner.

In a telephone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the special advisor to the Brazilian Presidency, Celso Amorim, that China supports Brazil in “defending its own rights” and in resisting the “bullying behavior” of excessive tariffs. Wang also said that China opposes “irrational external interference” in Brazil's internal affairs, without directly naming the United States. The information was released in a statement issued by the Chinese foreign ministry.

Earlier in the day, the Chinese Embassy in Brazil also published “unity is strength” on X. This is not the first time that China has defended Brazil against Trump's tariffs. In July, when the US president announced the tax on Brazilian products - the highest among the countries taxed - the Asian giant had already said that tariffs “should not be a tool of coercion, intimidation or interference.”

The Indian government has also signaled that it will contact Brazil for mutual support between the two countries that have been taxed with 50% tariffs by the Trump administration. Modi is expected to call Lula in the next few days.

🟢 Hamas Head of National Relations, Hussam Badran to Al-Jazeera: — "Israel's" threats to assassinate Hamas leaders inside and outside Gaza are repetitive, worthless, and do not affect our decisions.

We are dealing with a state that does not respect the law and is led by a gang of criminals.

The occupation does not cease its crimes, and our goal is to stop the war and the barbaric aggression against our people.

The occupation withdrew from the last round of negotiations after reaching understandings agreed upon by the mediators.

There are no delegations for negotiation, and our communications with the mediators are ongoing; the ball is in the court of the occupation and the American side.

Witkoff and the occupation are negotiating with each other, and there are no new proposals; what we recently reached was logical.

The resistance's weapon belongs to all Palestinian factions and the people as a whole, not just Hamas, and discussing it is a Palestinian matter.

Grant us a fully sovereign Palestinian state, and the resistance's weapon will be part of the state's weapon and its army.

The resistance's weapon is linked to the end of the occupation and the establishment of a Palestinian state, not merely its declaration and recognition.

The resistance's weapon is a story intended to deceive and mislead the world, as evidenced by what is happening in the West Bank and the crimes of the settlers.

The problem is not with the resistance's weapon, but with the continuation of the occupation, and the region will not enjoy stability unless Palestinians obtain their state.

The movement is keen on rearranging the Palestinian house on democratic foundations and within an unconditional national consensus.

The Oslo path is a failure, recognizing the occupation is a crime, and the Palestinian people have the right to choose who governs them.

We welcome any Arab or regional effort to reach a Palestinian consensus and respect the will and choices of the people.

The situation in Gaza is catastrophic, and the occupation's crimes are unjustifiable. What concerns us currently is stopping the war and protecting Palestinian blood.

Our reproach towards some Arab countries is out of a sense of expectation, and our relationship with Arab states is firm, and we appreciate their efforts.

#Lebanon

Highlights from the speech of the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, His Eminence Sheikh Naim Qassem, during the commemorative ceremony organized by Hezbollah in honor of the martyred commander Mohammad Saeed Izadi, known as “Hajj Ramadan”:

– Barrack said that after these measures, “Israel” would withdraw from the five points.

– America wanted, in its paper, to strip Lebanon of its military capability represented by the Resistance and to prevent the army from acquiring weapons that could affect “Israel”.

– America states that if the agreement is violated, “Israel” can be condemned by the Security Council, while if Lebanon violates it, aid is frozen and harsher economic sanctions are imposed on Lebanon.

– We do not agree to any new agreement; they must implement the old agreement, and we reject any timetable proposed for implementation under the umbrella of “Israeli” aggression.

Another counterrevolutionary plot against the Bolivarian Revolution defeated:
https://www.telesurenglish.net/rising-anti-terrorism-operation/

The attack, as revealed by Venezuela’s Minister of Interior, Justice, and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, was scheduled for 11:32 a.m. on Sunday, a time of peak pedestrian and vehicular activity. The explosive device consisted of three kilograms of TNT (trinitrotoluene), a high-power explosive, placed inside a multicolored backpack designed to blend in.

What caught authorities’ attention was the technical sophistication of the detonation method: the device was set to be triggered remotely via an analog mobile phone, a system that avoids digital networks and reduces the risk of immediate tracking. This type of mechanism is typical of paramilitary or terrorist operations, indicating advanced technical planning.

Tensions are rising between the Western-backed "HTS" regime in Damascus and the Western-backed "SDF" group in northeastern Syria. We're not on the verge of witnessing an all out war between these two groups super soon, but it could easily happen at some point over the next year or so. The bitter fighting between Druze militias and the "HTS" would be nothing compared to an actual "SDF"/"HTS" confrontation, as the "SDF" has up to 100,000 fighters. The real wild card here is whether the Turkish military would directly get involved. If yes, the "SDF" would be 100% doomed. If no, the fighting would likely end in a costly stalemate.

Here's a news item from the The Cradle about the "HTS"/"SDF" tensions: https://thecradle.co/articles/Damascus-condemns-Kurdish-led-unity-conference-as-attempt-to-revive-former-regime

For the Trump administration, one bright spot in last week’s dismal US jobs report was that immigrants had it worst. Jobs held by foreign-born individuals fell by 237,000 year-on-year in July, while jobs for native-born Americans rose by nearly 2mn.

Labor secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer told Fox News: “While we could have seen better jobs numbers, right now we’re seeing American workers are being put first — native-born workers account for all of the job growth and that’s key.”

But is that really what’s happening? Here’s an interesting spot from UBS economists Jonathan Pingle and Alan Detmeister.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ household survey, America’s native-born population aged 16 and over has increased by 3mn in the last seven months. Overall population growth in the same period was 1.1mn.

This doesn’t make a whole heap of sense. Any increase in the 16-plus native-born population this year would imply either a higher US birth rate in 2009 or a sudden increase in Boomer longevity. But US birth rates have been trending steadily lower since 2006 while post-pandemic deaths are back on the long-term trend:

The BLS asks around 40,000 people each month whether they and members of their household were born in the US or elsewhere. It’s a self-reported measure whose results are not weighted.

There’s no follow-up question as to whether foreign-born respondents are in the US legally. Nevertheless, what appears to have happened is that people who’d previously identified as foreign-born have suddenly changed their minds. Amid the largest deportation operation in US history, a lot of US residents may have become less willing to tell a government employee with a clipboard about where they and their family are from.

Carlos Bolsonaro feels ill after his father's house arrest and is treated in hospital in Rio. Councillor is being treated by a cardiologist, according to reports; he took part in an event in Florianópolis. STF (Supreme Federal Court) justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Bolsonaro's house arrest on Monday, as he believes that the former president failed to comply with a previous order by appearing in videos shown by supporters during demonstrations on Sunday.

During a demonstration in Rio de Janeiro, Flávio made a phone call to his father, broadcast during the event. In the call, the former president simply said: "Thank you all. It's for our freedom, our future, our Brazil. We will always be together". The senator even published the video on social media, but later deleted it. He said, before Moraes' decision, that he did so on the advice of his father's lawyers.

Someone just gave the worst argument in favor of 1M1V of all time at the DSA Convention right now. It was so bad the entire room started booing them lmao.

They basically said that if you oppose 1M1V you support Jim Crow, Slavery and Apartheid. It was bizarre.

The dsa convention sounds fun lol

If you ask what is the 1M1V is this

Democracy Dies in Inbox: Detroit DSA’s Experience of 1M1V

The right wing dsa chapters have been pushing for it

Edit: lol yea the vote failed lol

Lebanon: Al Mayadeen correspondent: "Hezbollah and Amal Movement ministers will withdraw from the [ongoing] cabinet session if there is insistence on discussing the US proposal [which demands Hezbollah to disarm before any talks on expelling Israeli forces from the south, ending attacks, and releasing prisoners]."

"This is an indication that the president, the prime minister, and the ministers of the guardianship forces are determined to overturn the National Pact and the Taif Agreement and make a concession of sovereign to Washington and Riyadh.

In the red sand, two ancient cultures collide.

Delegates from Navajo, Comanche, Kiowa Sioux, Pueblo and Lakota nations in North America attended this year’s Garma Festival, travelling to Arnhem Land with the goal of exchanging traditions and knowledge.

“Performing here on this ground, this place, is powerful, I can feel it,” Mr Cozad says.

“As an Indigenous people we are close to nature, this ground, trees, I can feel the power, the good energy here.”

A while back, someone posted a proposed DSA platform that was explicitly revolutionary and M-L. I don't remember the caucus that wrote it, might have been Marxist Unity Group?

I was reminded of it because the DSA convention is this weekend. Does anyone here have insights on what to expect? While I'm hopeful that there are M-Ls represented in DSA, I don't know how the internal politics are in DSA

Hasanabi fans, he will be streaming from the convention this weekend as well as interviewing Rashida Tlaib

Bloomberg: US and Russia Plan Truce Deal to Cement Putin’s Gains in Ukraine

Putin is demanding that Ukraine cede its entire eastern Donbas area to Russia as well as Crimea [...]

Russia would halt its offensive in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine along the current battlelines as part of the deal [...]

The agreement aims essentially to freeze the war and pave the way for a ceasefire and technical talks on a definitive peace settlement, the people said.

Seems like Bloomberg has been acting as a mouthpiece for the US State Department to steer the narrative on the peace deal.

I assume they are simply reporting the US's pie-in-the-sky terms. These would be completely unacceptable to Russia, especially if there's no demilitarization and neutrality guarantee.

Today, we honor the anniversary of the martyrdom of Ibrahim Al-Nabulsi, the Lion of Nablus. We salute a guardian who fearlessly, tirelessly protected our soil and its steadfast people.

This day does not merely mark an end, for while all people die with their last breath, martyrs are born on the day of their sacrifice. Their names resonate, echoing heroism, raising bloodstained rifles that seem to reach Heaven itself.

Having grown up during the second intifada in the embrace of the Old City of Nablus, Mountain of Fire, his resolve was tested early on. He witnessed firsthand the bravery of its people, those who resist until victory or martyrdom. By 15, he was already wanted by the occupation. In 2021, he was the most wanted fighter in the West Bank. He was detained with friends and martyrs Mohammed Al-Dakhil and Adham Mabrouka by the PA and subjected to torture. Even as the PA sought to kidnap him just a month before his martyrdom, Ibrahim's spirit was, as always, unbroken.

Guided by his principles, Ibrahim’s compass never strayed. He survived nine assassination attempts, never abandoning resistance. His sights were set on our eternal capital of Al-Quds, his rifle always directed at the enemy.

Ibrahim embodied our struggle, representing the ideals of the homeland, dedicating himself to his land, people, and religion. His journey left an indelible mark on a nation, and his status as a beacon of defiance shall remain ablaze in the hearts of generations, kindling the flames of resistance amongst the cubs of this great nation, from Nablus to Gaza to the camps in exile and diaspora. Young eyes continue to look up at him, seeing themselves in the Lion's legacy.

Ibrahim gifted us his final testament. His words, profound beyond his 19 years, remind us that perhaps, in the face of such giants, we are the ones who seem small.

"I love my mother." "Take care of the homeland after me." "Do not abandon the rifle."

We honor his memory by upholding his principles, following in his footsteps, and continuing on his path as we resist the enemy in all its forms, in all places.

Mother. Homeland. Rifle. Glory to the Lion of Nablus, Ibrahim Al-Nabulsi.
