For those who are curious it's properly balanced. There are 24 slots available. Pairs: 1-13, 2-14, 6-18, 9-21, 10-22 Triple: 8-16-24 All pairs and triples have their centers of mass on the rotation axis.

THANK GOD. I WAS SO WORRIED!!!

This person centrifuges!

[-] GraniteM@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago

What do you do if there's a prime number of test tubes, like the thirteen in the picture?

[-] dingus@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

If you don't want to figure out some awkward balancing techniques, you can just use a balance tube. Fill a tube with water to a similar height of the tube it opposes.

For a 24-slot centrifuge, 5 pairs and 1 triple will balance 13 tubes, as is described in the comment you replied to.

Here's a video that also explains it: The Centrifuge Problem - Numberphile

[-] veroxii@aussie.zone 1 points 6 months ago

They just explained it. If you have 3 you put them on 8-16-24. Everything else will be pairs which you put across from each other.

[-] Malgas@beehaw.org 45 points 6 months ago

Why did you build a death ray?

To take over the world.

No, I mean, what mad hypothesis are you testing? Are you just making mad observations?

Look, I'm just trying to take over the world. That's all.

You're at least going to leave some of the world as a mad control group, right?

Sad fact: most "mad scientists" are actually mad engineers.

(Borrowed from a Cowbirds in Love strip which at the time of this writing is inaccessible.)

I miss Cowbirds in Love.

[-] NobodyElse@sh.itjust.works 34 points 6 months ago

I’ve heard an unbalanced ultracentrifuge explode and have seen the aftermath. Now that’s mad science!

[-] Contramuffin@lemmy.world 24 points 6 months ago

Don't worry, that's actually perfectly balanced. That's the mad part

[-] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 months ago

Could still be different amounts in there though

[-] FreshLight@sh.itjust.works 22 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I disagree. A real mad scientist is still a human and not a centrifuge

[-] nailbar@sopuli.xyz 4 points 6 months ago

He turned himself into a centrifuge in a mad science experiment!

[-] lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 6 months ago

I'm going mad just looking at this. I mean maybe it's actually balanced, but like... there are easier ways. Stop tryna flex and spin your shit down.

[-] SatanicNotMessianic@lemmy.ml 11 points 6 months ago

Having dealt with this kind of thing before, it gives a new and more literal definition to the phrase “bloody idiot.”

[-] blandfordforever@lemm.ee 4 points 6 months ago

That's a properly balanced centrifuge. Perhaps we should be calling you the silly names.

[-] Omega_Haxors@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Actual mad scientists: 🤬🥼🧪

[-] guyrocket@kbin.social 5 points 6 months ago

But what are they so mad about?

[-] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 6 months ago

i think that centrifuge might be actually balanced

[-] skillissuer@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 6 months ago

yeah it is, it's 5 pairs + one triangle

[-] Lucien@hexbear.net 3 points 6 months ago

But are you wearing welding goggles?

[-] Venator@lemmy.nz 3 points 6 months ago

Third photo should be of the dude from Explosions&Fire or NileRed.

[-] DemBoSain@midwest.social 5 points 6 months ago

Purple gold will be the death of us all.

I think you misspelled thought emporium:

We're talking MAD science, not regular science.

[-] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 6 months ago

Any time you see a video of a cat backing up and saying "no no no no no" it's because they're watching the researcher's hand move toward the on switch of that centrifuge.

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 1 points 6 months ago

There is no way those tubes are balanced step away from the centrifuge

[-] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 months ago

They are, actually. Assuming opposite pairs / triples have the same amount of liquid.
