I don’t know how reliable this is, but it seems legit and with his popularity I do think it’s possible.

What’s everyone’s thought on this as a rumor and as a potential actual casting?

Isn't it crazy how they just remake the same movie over and over now

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 25 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Now?

Do you mean Marvel, or Hollywood in general? Because, what else is Marvel going to do? Create a whole new character and build an entire show around him?

If you mean Hollywood in general, I agree they should get back to making original classics like

  • The Thing (1982)
  • A Fistful of Dollars (1964)
  • The Departed (2006)
  • Brewster's Millions (1985)
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
  • A Star is Born (1954)
  • A Star is Born (1976)
  • A Star is Born (2018)

Or maybe just a new Dracula, Frankenstein, Shakespeare, Arabian Nights, Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Greek Mythology, Robin Hood, Seven Samurai, King Arthur, or Journey to the West?

Movies have always been a medium for adapting and reimagining existing stories. They are also making new movies with new stories, but those don't make headlines because nobody knows what they are yet.

"Famous actor cast in a new movie and we don't know what it's about yet. Click here to find out more no information."

You see the remakes, because we can speculate what this Reed Richards will be like, how he will approach the character, and what shape his story will find. You remember the remakes because you're annoyed by it. You've forgotten the movies that came and went while making no splash, because they were just regular movies.

[–] criitz@reddthat.com 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I actually totally agree with you that remaking things has always been the way.

I dunno why stuff like this hits different though. Maybe it's because I'm old enough to see the same story over and over and notice it now, like you said. But I think it's a bit more than that.

I mean, the Disney movie Aladdin for example is a beloved part of my childhood. And it's just an old story retold... But it's a unique piece of art on its own right. The animation, the comedy, the music, etc. It feels like it stands on its own despite being an old story.

But, and I'm guessing here, this Fantastic Four movie is going to be just like the last Fantastic Four movie. But this time with Pedro Pascal. It's not gonna be unique. None of these new era of marvel type movies are different from the last aside from the characters. And that's not a bad thing either! It's a totally valid form of art and enjoyment.

It's just a bit crazy.

The last Fant4stic Four movie was a steaming pile of ass.

But my biggest concern is always the cgi for Reed. You cannot make Mr. Fantastic look realistic because the physics don't make any sort of sense. If he stretches out the way he does in the comics, he would fall over. He doesn't have Spiderman grippy feet, so once his center of gravity leaves the area around his hips, he needs to be laying on the floor like a snake.

That's why every movie has done everything possible to avoid showing him do anything. It's not the actor's fault that stretchy powers look bad on screen.

[–] 0ops@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

That was legitimately one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I couldn't come up with any redeeming qualities

[–] flatpandisk@lemm.ee 5 points 9 months ago

Feel like they remake it every 7ish years lol

[–] brandon@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Fox kept getting into a loop of making films in order to maintain the rights, which invariable get rushed and subsequently bomb. No one wants to be associated with the pre-existing trash and so, they need to do a reboot and start fresh. The rights became far more valuable than the films over time, as Marvel went from near bankruptcy (who sold rights for basically nothing) to a multibillion dollar brand. Eventually Fantastic Four, along with x-men, basically just became a bargaining chip to extract as much money as possibly when they were eventual bought out by Disney.

Now the rights are in Marvel/Disney’s hands, it shouldn’t need to go through this ever looping cycle of trash every few years.

[–] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

I remember one remake so far. That nobody watched I think. But the alternative is to just not do fantastic 4, which even up to this point, not having them in the MCU has been such a travesty. And I'm not even a big fan of the FF, but having Doom in the MCU is just magnificent and I'll take it.

[–] agent_flounder@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Tenth^1 time's a charm

  1. or 6th? 8th? or... Idk I lost count. Wake me up when they make a good one for once.
[–] Fades@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

how dare a comic book based film studio put out yet another comic book movie in yet another attempt to recreate comics as movies

[–] Dieterlan@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (3 children)

I don't have any particular attachment to either Pascal or the Fantastic Four. But between The Mandalorian and The Last of Us he seems to be doing pretty well in the "Dad" role. And isn't Reed Richards the Dad of Marvel's first family? (Edit to remove word)

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I think I’d agree with this assessment. I always thought Reed would be a little younger though.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Nah, he's always had that grey streak in his hair.

I think he was supposed to be late 40s when he got his powers, Sue was mid 20s and Johnny was early 20.

He's always been almost old enough to be their dad's, they were just going for the professor grad student thing with him and Sue.

Pedro can look young enough if they show him getting his powers, and old enough to have been in the game a while.

[–] Zorque@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago

Didn't he get the streak because of the radiation?

[–] thebardingreen@lemmy.starlightkel.xyz 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I think he was supposed to be late 40s when he got his powers, Sue was mid 20s

And no one would bat an eye at that in 60s, 70s or 80s and people would laugh it off in the 90s. But in 2024? We're not so cool with that anymore.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

You know that famous early psychology experiment about prison?

The professor was 40/50 years old and banging his early 20s grad student. One night he was laughing about how one participant begged for hours to be let go, and Zimbardo just wouldn't stop talking until the kid stopped asking to leave. So the kids parents staged a prison break on the fake prison and got him out.

He wanted to keep going, but she told him she wouldn't have sex with him till he ended it.

He ended it the next day

Zimbardo is still active in academics and treated like a celebrity.

Shits real fucked up how those relationships were almost encouraged. Especially considering how hard it was for women to get into science back then.

But yeah, I think they'll shrink the age gap to like 35-25.

[–] Khrux@ttrpg.network 2 points 9 months ago

I'm fond of both, infact fantastic four may be my favourite thing to come from superheroes and basically only watched Narcos when it released because I liked Pedro Pascal. I dread this project.

[–] Zorque@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago

More of an absentee dad. He can't even watch over his own kids, much less the rest of the Marvel universe.

[–] sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Is it? I hadn’t heard anything until today and then noticed a bunch of articles about it when I did a search, so it was totally new to me.

[–] sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That's a good thing. It means you're far enough removed to not be emotionally involved and yet still care enough to get excited.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

For sure. Well, we’ll see what happens! I’m more curious who they get for the rest of the cast.

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

Ah I see techradar didn't follow the industry standard of clickbait lol

[–] DigitalGemini@sh.itjust.works 6 points 9 months ago (3 children)
[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

I’ve never seen him play a villain besides Wonder Woman. Im not sure he has the gravitas to pull off that menacing of an adversary. I could be totally wrong though!

[–] Entropywins@kbin.social 3 points 9 months ago

Jesus that'd be AMAZING!!!

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Or the other Reed. The jerk one.

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Enh, he’s too everywhere right now. I like him but I’d rather have someone else for Reed, but maybe Ben? Or Wyatt Wingfoot? Or Moleman? I dunno.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca -1 points 9 months ago

On second thought, I don’t like him as The Thing just because being Jewish is pretty important to Ben’s character.

Who else could he be…? Doom? We know he’s not against wearing a mask for 98% of a role already.

Maybe not Wyatt Wingfoot. His heritage isn’t as important to the character as The Thing’s, but let’s keep the native guy native.

He could be someone like Wizard or Kl’rt, the original Super Skrull…. or Annhilus maybe?

Heck, he could be Herbie or Willy Lumpkin.

I dunno, there’s so many characters he could be that would be sweet, but I don’t want to see him as Reed. Someone younger please. I know Reed’s supposed to be one of the more mature heroes, but they could age someone up at first then just stop doing it in ten years for Reed.

I do think Moleman would be awesome for him though.

[–] Vespair@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I think he's an extremely safe choice and is likely to deliver a perfectly fine but undoubtedly unremarkable performance.

I'll of course be happy to be proven wrong, but my general reaction to this casting (and him in general) is "okay fine"

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Yeah. I do like Pedro, but he getting overused. Hollywood tends to have this issue of something works ok so they continue to abuse it until the next shiny things comes that they can abuse.

[–] s0ckpuppet@kbin.social 3 points 9 months ago

I think he was a pretty solid choice for Last of Us

[–] loopedcandle@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Everybody thinking about Reed, I'm hoping for a Pedro Pascal Doo..

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I would have a hard time not thinking of the Mandalorian if he's just a voice behind a mask.

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I feel you, but I think the personalities are different enough

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

True, I just think it's a bad idea for the same reason I don't want Adam Driver.

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

That is what I want.

He is outrageously likeable, let him play Doom and pair that with the writers giving Doom the complexity the character deserves.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (4 children)

As more of a Star Wars guy, I wonder what this means for Din’s story/future.

I think he could work for Reed, but his age and the commitment over time seems a little sus considering all of the work he’s been getting.

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

He has gradually done less and less acting in the suit. I think 90% of his work on Mandalorian now is voice only.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Right, but I wasn’t sure if that would take away from being available to do the voice if he’s involved in other TV and being called in to all of these movies

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 3 points 9 months ago

I'm sure Disney'll make sure his Marvel role doesn't conflict with his Star Wars role

[–] CeruleanRuin@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

With the recent announcement of Mando season 4 being turned into a movie instead, I have a feeling that character is almost done. They've been building from the start to the reconstruction of Mandalore, and by many accounts all the pieces are in place for that climax to take place in the movie.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

True. Plus they could go on with an all new cast as Mandalore tries to rebuild if they wanted.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Season 3 kind of put a pin in it, and with Carl Weathers' death, the whole story on Nevarro is kind of done.

[–] topinambour_rex@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

The producers said they would continue the show as long there is enough people watching it. In other words, they don't habe real plans for Mando, except making more cash from it.
