It ain't just you the vibes are fucked.

Most here are recommending dual booting on 1 disk but I'll share my experience of dual booting on 2 separate disks. I tried it out after using 1 disk for a while and preferred it actually. I chose that method because I anticipated fully removing Windows down the road and didn't want to deal with partitioning.

My system booted to Linux by default, I had a script for when I wanted to boot into Windows. It told GRUB to ignore the default & boot windows on the next boot, then restarted the system.

Only issue was a conflict in time formats between windows and Linux causing the time to be wrong after switching but I was able to permanently fix that without too much fuss by changing a config.

I've got a friend who tends to be very opinionated and judgemental (and has very good memory!) and she will not forgive me for the sin of consulting critics/reviews regarding movies. (Rlm in this case but the specific critic doesn't matter)

Like in the past I've decided not to see a film because a critic says it's dogshit and she brings it up as if it's some lapse of personal integrity on my part. The number of films I've heard of because of critics then watched and thoroughly enjoyed far outweighs the number skipped but this is apparently not to my credit as I was simply "given" the opinion that they're good movies 🙄

I like to consume all media critically, cultivate my taste over time, learn about what I'm in engaging in. There's too much out there to see/play/read so I gotta pick and choose somehow!

Anyway I'm sick of her weird moralizing and decided I need to tell her to step off but didn't find the right moment last time.

I'd be less indignant if she had good taste but she likes literally everything and if there's a work she doesn't like it's only because the creator did something awful, not something about the work itself. (Did you know Jackie Chan is a sexist asshole?)

Do you have any thoughts on critics/reviews or have you encountered similar attitudes?

My current Morrowind playthrough is as Argonian John Brown so I will happily kill this person. (I recognize that it is satire)

It's astonishing what a difference a switch to a 3 day weekends (32 hour work week) would make to my quality of life.

Mandatory? No. But there are people at work I like having lunch with, just not my direct coworkers lol.

I'm rocking Morrowind on the steam deck with openmw. Up scaled textures, AI voice acting and audiobooks, and I finally got custom shaders working on flatpak so I have volumetric clouds & mist.

what's there to learn beyond just buying existing product?

I'm comfortable tinkering with hardware and software, it would be nice if that meant a drone with fewer backdoors.

this is so sad sadness

Only done a few lessons and it's much better than the previous app I tried, Mango Languages (it was free through my library). Hello Chinese is much more holistic in its approach, and starts with more simple sentence structure and repition.

It took me longer than I'd like to admit to realize it was total bullshit and start to really understand evolution. it also stunted my development of critical thinking skills. I love science and the natural world so much, I still don't know if I can forgive my folks for doing that.

Shoutout to AromRa on YouTube for his creationism/evolution videos.

I have a library of movies, TV shows and music for local hosting. Right now I have a script that uses cp to copy newly added media files to a second, identical drive in another room as a backup. there has to be a better way to do this.

ignoring cloud storage and RAID, what are some command line tools that could ensure that the integrity of the files remains intact? assuming the drive continues to function properly.

These are almost exactly the same but it looks like the second has a few small supply sites not present in the first. It would also help to know the strategic value of a city one is considering moving to, as well as that of any rinfrastructure, geographical features, etc.

with the right (small-ish usually) dose, set, and setting it really is a mental performance enhancing drug. increased social performance, introspection, novel ideas, even some memory recall.

does this say something about my neurotype?

It seems to be happening more frequently that I'll be listening to a pod that discusses current events (online & otherwise) and they just utterly fail to describe what the fuck even happened. Like they'll just obliquely reference some event and it's assumed the listener already knows about it and is tuning in for the discussion. maybe they'll actually explain but only after at least few minutes of comments which I have no context for and can't really parse.

maybe I'm noticing this becasuse I'm recovering from terminally online syndrome, maybe they're getting lazier, but It's happened in chapo trap house, wtyp, seeking derangements, possibly even true anon(?). Never citations needed though, they're goated.

If you're a podcaster and you're going to discuss some current event please actually relay what happened (who, what, when, where, why) for your audience before making jokes about it.

idk, maybe this is a neurodivergence thing. and yes I am actually listening.

I got a USB midi keyboard (pictured) from a friend but I don't know what software I should use to play it.

I'm running Ubuntu with KDE Plasma and am hoping for software that's simple to setup & use. the keyboard is for simple musical tinkering.

I created an account and am signed in on element, what's a good way to get the feel for things?

Any room recommendations?

What I mean by favorite here is

"what I often find myself greatly admiring when I notice it's done really well"

gonna go with Director of Photography (cinematographer). with emphasis on the photography.

Some things I've watched recently that illustrate this role.

  • Saltburn, great use of vertical space with the 4:3 aspect ratio, lots of color and natural light. Summer is captured well.
  • Crash (1996), Lots of night scenes (always tough to get right), the setting looks appropriately dark, grimy, and mechanical.
  • Fight Club, also a (literally) dark film and looks great.
