I had a wonderful experience during my brief stay in Boston. I wandered out of the hotel to find a gentleman in what could only be described as Reinfair garb, asked him where I could find a good bar. "You wanna go tah a fhuckin' bhar? C'mon, get in my car - I'll take you to a fhuckin' bhar."

I proceeded to get into a car with a complete stranger, went to a hole in the wall pub and chatted for a bit while some terrible live music played. Everybody was really friendly and I have nothing but positive things to say about the place.

I cannot imagine the confidence or, alternatively, the self-destruction necessary to get into the car of a random stranger. I am in awe.

It was probably a coin flip either you end up with a story for the kids about a unique local weirdo OR the cops find you in an abandoned apartment decapitated with a broadsword

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 29 points 6 months ago (1 children)
[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 4 points 6 months ago

id be perfectly fine with being murdered only if its decapitation with a cool fucking sword

[–] Phegan@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I hope you enjoyed the Tam

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Is that the only place to drink in that city? I went a few years ago and that's exactly where my friend took me. I enjoyed getting drunk there. I think we had bad pizza down the street after but it's all kind of blurry.

[–] Phegan@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

It's not, but it's the iconic hole in the wall dive.

[–] ManosTheHandsOfFate@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

I lived in Boston and some of its suburbs for 14 years during and after college. I think Boston has the best townie bars in the country. Some of my best bar memories are hanging out with friends who'd lived in the area their whole lives.

[–] BobbyNevada@discuss.tchncs.de 92 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The only time I was in Boston, my girlfriend and I ran for the subway before the door closed. A guy held the door, I thanked him, and he turned to his friend and said "See, not everyone is a dick, asshole." Or was it "not everyone is an asshole, dick." But it was pretty on brand.

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 6 months ago

A couple years ago a guy was dragged to his death when he got his arm stuck in the doors on the T (Boston’s subway).

It’s one of the most mechanically dangerous transportation systems in the world because most of it is so out of date.

I got a lift from a tourist from Boston when I was hitchhiking from Falkland to Auchtermuchty in Scotland

He had an A4 sheet of paper that his wife had taped to the front of the glove box that said "LEFT YA FUCKIN BOZO" to make sure he stayed on the ~~right~~ wrong side of the road

[–] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 47 points 6 months ago

My wife learnt to drive here in the UK, she has a song she sings when she's anywhere with opposite sides for traffic. Goes something like: Right hand side of the road, right hand side of the road, dear god right hand side of the road....shit fuck, right hand side of the road!

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 27 points 6 months ago (3 children)

If he was from Boston, it was probably letter, not A4

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 29 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The wife probably found some paper in Scotland to write the sign

[–] Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 9 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

I know, what a silly reply that was! Like he would bring a sheaf of paper 8000 miles or whatever in case his wife wanted to write a sign!

Is that guy so fucking argumentative cos he's from Boston? 😂

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

An entire sheaf? How many signs do you think she wrote?

[–] Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 3 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Maybe 500. Or is there an imperial version for US size paper? 368.5?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (4 children)

There's no imperial anything for the US, since they use US customary units. But it's probably a bushel.

[–] Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 4 points 6 months ago

Well don't hide your light under 365 sheets of paper then I dunno

I probably shouldn't upvote people just because they say the first thought that crossed my mind.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 14 points 6 months ago

1 out of 4 points confirmed.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I imagine you said "off" with at least 3 syllables.

[–] Hexarei@programming.dev 10 points 6 months ago

Fuck awh-uh-fuh

[–] ampedwolfman@lemmy.world 32 points 6 months ago

I went stopped in Boston twice on vacation for a few days each trip. Aside from the white power shit that happens there I really liked it. It was filled with quaint little shops, the people were cool, the views were awesome, I got to huck a box into the Boston harbor. I would 💯 go back. Shit was a vibe.

On the flip side, I went down to Salem to do tours and stuff and I fucking hated it. The only cool spot was a pet supply place where they sold homemade treats and dog food along with toys and stuff. I was high as fuck petting their shop cat for line 20 minutes. Definite 10/10. If you're nearby get fucking blasted and go pet this lady's cat. She was super cool about me not wanting to come in and look around. Just wanted to pet the cat.

It was the New England Dog Biscuit Company. This was the cat. Go pet the fucking cat.

Yes, it sucks. However, there are many, many places for all kinds of music events.

Hell, even my fav brewery in Roxbury does Jazz night every Thursday with performers from Berklee College of Music and N.E. Conservatory. It's great!

[–] Rolando@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

ikr OP is obviously a Yankees fan.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 19 points 6 months ago (2 children)

if a place is expensive there's probably some reason for people wanting to live there enough to drive up prices

[–] WolfLink@lemmy.ml 14 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Business hub city. Especially for tech. Especially especially biotech.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Also international Airport.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 months ago

In which they won't give you a damn beer before noon!

(or maybe it was 11. I just know I was beerless during a connection at 9 AM)

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

No. Massholes just want to stay in their unaffordable hometown like the rest of us. That doesn't mean Boston and it's folk doesn't fucking suck. (With love from a Mets fan that hates you more than the Yankees 😘)

[–] dumpsterlid@lemmy.world 16 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (3 children)

Boston is a lame puritan colony, there was a criminal from there named Roger Williams who founded a pretty chill spot nearby though.

[–] tcgoetz@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Little Rody? The crookedest little state in the nation?

[–] AlwaysNowNeverNotMe@kbin.social 4 points 6 months ago

Boston is the only city I absolutely refused to drive in when I had to go there for work.

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 7 points 6 months ago

It's the worst city I've driven in.

[–] Bo7a@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

I made the mistake of seeing bike lanes and assuming renting an electric would be a good way to get around.

Boston bike lanes are suggestions, not enforced. And they often run in between two car lanes.

I'm a pretty risk-taking dude. motorcycles, adventure/rally cars, 'survival' camping, you name it. But I will NEVER ride a bicycle in Boston again.

What a terrifying experience.

[–] MintyAnt@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (2 children)

It's not for the faint lmao. Still, the bike infra in Boston is way, way better every year. I recall biking by North station recently and it was.. like there was a separate bike like and lights and shit. It was nothing like what it used to be - which was nothing for bikes at all.

Once you get used to it and know what you're comfortable with.. it's all pretty good

[–] diffusive@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I lived in Boston like 7 months during my studies. I was on a scholarship from a (not particularly rich) west European country... Can relate with the meme. On the positive side was just few nice hours of groundhog bus to NY 😂

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Groundhog bus? Do you mean Greyhound?

[–] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 11 points 6 months ago

great. now people know about the groundhog bus.

Thanks asshole.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

Everything I know about Boston, I learned from Fallout 4.

And, it seems accurate.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago

Yeah but i still like the band

[–] padge@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 months ago

I'm from Boston. Can't say you're wrong
