Joe Slovo, born on this day in 1926, was a South African communist politician and miliant opponent of the apartheid system whose wife, Ruth First, was assassinated by the South African police.

A Marxist-Leninist, Slovo was a long-time leader and theorist in the South African Communist Party (SACP), a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC), and a commander of the ANC's military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK).

Joe Slovo was born in Lithuania in 1926 and moved to South Africa with his parents at the age of nine. His father was a van driver in Johannesburg, and Slovo worked as a dispatch clerk for a chemist while studying law at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and Bachelor of Laws degree.

Slovo was an active member of the South Africa Communist Party (SACP) from the 1940s and, after becoming an advocate at the Johannesburg Bar, became well known for his work as a defence lawyer in political trials.

He married Ruth First, daughter of SACP treasurer Julius First, in 1949. The following year the couple was among the first 600 people 'named' in terms of the Suppression of Communism Act, and thereby subjected to various restrictions.

Slovo was a founding member of the Congress of Democrats in 1953 and represented the organisation on the national consultative committee of the Congress Alliance created at the time of the call for a Congress of the People. In 1954, he was banned from attending all gatherings under the Suppression of Communism Act, but continued his political activities covertly.

Slovo contributed to the drafting of the Freedom Charter, but was unable to attend the Congress of the People in Kliptown because of his restriction order. He watched the proceedings through binoculars from a nearby rooftop.

In December 1956 Slovo, together with other Congress activists, was charged with treason. He acted as a member of the defence team as well as being an accused. During the preparatory examination of the Treason Trial, as it came to be known, he was charged for contempt of court when objecting to the magistrate's handling of the examination, but was acquitted on appeal. Treason charges against him were dropped in late 1958.

Slovo was one of the earliest members of the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC) Umkhonto we Sizwe, and regularly attended meetings of its high command at Lilliesleaf Farm, Rivonia. He left the country in June 1963 on an 'external mission' and a month later police captured the remaining key figures on the high command, including Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbeki. A month after the arrest, Slovo's wife - Ruth First - was detained for almost four months. On her release she left the country, together with their three daughters.

Slovo continued to work for the ANC and the SACP abroad and in 1977 moved to Maputo, Mozambique, where he established an operational centre for the ANC. In 1982, Ruth First was killed in a parcel bomb explosion in Maputo. Two years later, Slovo was forced to leave Mozambique following the signing of the Nkomati Accord between that country and South Africa. In January 1986, a British court awarded Slovo substantial damages against a South African newspaper group over a report in The Star newspaper that he had orchestrated the murder of his wife.

Following the death of Moses Mabhida in 1986, Slovo was appointed general secretary of the SACP. Early in 1987, the SACP asked the ANC to relieve Slovo of his MK position as a result of the pressure of his duties as general secretary of the SACP. As a result he vacated the position of chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe in April, but retained his position on the ANC National Executive Commitee and its political-military council.

In June 1989, the SACP congress adopted a new programme of action to replace its 1962 guidelines. It is accepted that the strategies of armed struggled did not rule out the possibilities of negotiations and compromise.

The SACP and ANC were unbanned in February 1990, and Slovo was elected as the party's general secretary, but in 1991 he retired from this position largely because of ill health, he was subsequently elected party chairman at the SACP conference held in December 1991.

After the 1994 elections Slovo was elected to cabinet where he served as Minister of Housing until his death on 6 January 1995.

"No matter what vision one has of South Africa, the first thing that must be done is to destroy racism."

Joe Slovo

I hate when maintenance needs to be done on my apartment and I have no clue when it'll actually be done and like the guy came and took apart my broiler and it's just sitting on pieces on the floor and it's like, he's coming back to finish that, right??

I love the idea of fiction where human settlements on other planets are subject to the threat of stray munitions from a nearby orbital war. Like okay everyone, weather forecast says we've got a missile barrage coming in two years, let's start pouring concrete.

So today I went to Target, and whenever I go to a supermarket I always check out the books. I'm rarely interested in the sorts of books carried by supermarkets, but sometimes there'll be a diamond in the rough or they'll be carrying some classics. If nothing else I figure that the books at the supermarket best represent books that are read by mainstream Americans, so it's interesting to see that. Also interesting to see how the books are curated by different store brands.

But today, in amongst the political books and the self-help books and the worst poetry I've ever perused, I saw a book that caught my eye. It was called Black Shield Maiden. Skimmed the blurb, and it seemed like it was historical fantasy about an African woman, presumably from sub-Saharan Africa, who gets caught up in the Islamic slave trade, then taken through the Islamic world and sold to Norsemen, where I have to assume she gains her freedom and becomes a warrior. I thought this sounded like a fun lens to explore contemporary issues, maybe make a point about the attitudes of today are born out of past traditions, that sort of thing.

So I immediately look up the reviews. Online reviews can be a tricky thing to sort through, as I'm sure anyone reading this knows, but in this case almost all the top reviews on Goodreads were calling this book racist, poorly researched, and Islamophobic. Then I find out this book has been "co-written" by Willow Smith (faildaughter of Will Smith) and a seemingly previously unpublished screenwriter named Jess Hendel. I looked Hendel up, not really any information on her website. On Linkedin it looks like she tried to hack it in academia, working on Gender Studies, left that for a series of marketing and copywriter gigs, and has spent the last six years working on Black Shield Maiden while also doing some AI marketing bullshit for Khan Academy. In fact, a lot of AI bullshit terms all over her Linkedin page, which immediately tells me her worth as a working creative.

TL:DR Saw a book about an enslaved African woman in ~800 AD who is sold to the Norse, becomes freed warrior. I still think this is an interesting premise for a historical fantasy book, sadly poisoned by the terrible writing of an AI idiot and Will Smith's faildaughter.

ISISrael coping at "South Africa being Hamas" has only backfired, with demonstrations in South Africa basically being "fuck it, we ballin" and flags of Hamas, Al-Aqsa Martyrs, Hezbollah, etc. steadily marching over the Nelson Mandela Bridge, past the Constitutional Court and in between all the apartment towers.

Former anti-apartheid guerillas including Ronnie Kasrils and Mandla Mandela, even the foreign minister Naledi Pandor have also expressed critical support in Hamas' own liberation struggle, with Hamas leadership having made multiple trips to South Africa in the past decade.

I also recall reading that since the 1980s, collaboration between Hamas and uMkhonto we Sizwe in South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle, especially interactions with Ronnie Kasrils himself, have contributed to renouncing more actual antisemitic sentiments.

According to Forgotten Weapons' video on the Vektor R-series rifles, Isnotreal demanded that the post-Apartheid South Africa complete it's orders of manufacturing and shipping Galil rifles. Nelson Mandela in response, told Shimon Peres to "cope+seethe+L+ratio+stay mad zionist+skill issue, also thanks for the free guns, lmao". And then Nelson Mandela called Shimon Peres a "settler-colonialist saltine KKKracker".

In an ironic twist there are now people calling for boycotts and sanctions against South Africa, again after 60 years.

It's also actually surprising that it took until now for an otherwise based Ireland to recognize Palestinian statehood.

In recent times also, major figures have also openly admitted verbatim, the us-foreign-policy exists, including current and former heads of state in Namibia and South Africa, in addition to that priest in Bethlehem during his "Christ Under the Rubble" sermon.

I also wonder if someone in the Pissraeli government will end up launching a Jericho-3 on Zambia* in a fit of rage or to "make a statement".

Death to AmeriKKKa

I'm baking something about how reductive materialist concepts of the mind are liberating because it frees us from the immutable nature of the dualistic soul. The soul can't be changed, it's a hard limit. We're trapped in the grip of god. But a mechanistic mind arises from physical machines, and we can modify those machines or build entirely new ones, giving us the potential to decide what we should be and what we want to become.

Went to an old mine that had been converted into a museum today. Number one takeaway was that being a miner circa 1900 would've been fucking miserable. Number two is that salamanders are cool and I should look for them more often

Every time i see someone just call someone else evil in a internet argument I just think to myself about what I'd do if I was the one involved. (Namely, say that yeah, i'm so evil I burnt down five orphanages, kicked a dog, and ate three babies on my way to make this post)

Honestly, I've gotten to a point where like fifteen or sixteen years of stupid internet arguments and FSTDT bullshit have eroded my ability to take philosophy seriously so fundamentally that I genuinely struggle to take unified concepts of good and evil themselves seriously anymore
