Parton’s version of love, which includes condoning immoral sexual behavior (“be who you are,” she’s said), is unaligned with God’s vision for humanity. Like so many secularized spiritual leaders, Parton equates love with agreement, but the two are not reciprocal. Love doesn’t mean we must accept sinfulness as good to avoid hurting someone’s feelings.

It’s a reminder to be careful when looking to cultural Christians to light the way. For example, we love to hear Stephen Colbert testify about following Christ, but when he rants against the overturn of Roe v. Wade, it’s clear he’s misguided.

Similarly, in the same week that Parton mentioned her upbringing in church, The Advocate (a large circulation magazine) called her an “LGBTQ+ icon.” And her rhinestone-studded flashy outfits, big hair, and infamous chest have inspired many a drag queen. That’s not her fault, but she does seem to indulge it.

Also, yes Dolly Parton has always been beautiful, but I can't think of a single time her being overtly sexual, and rarely is she sexualized by others in my experience. Who the fuck is this guy

The author's bio:

Ericka Andersen is a freelance writer and the author of "Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church & the Church Needs Women." She is a columnist for World magazine and reporter for Christianity Today.

"She's a country music legend and a legitimate philanthropist, but she's also a woman, so let's talk about her tits instead."

Is Dolly Parton not a broadly beloved figure? This seems like an angle that is unlikely to bring in new readers other than maybe people hate-reading this one article.

I deadass consider her the one decent white person in all of Tennessee, idk how anyone could hate her really

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Well, she is responsible for that awful hustle grindset bullshit song 5 To 9.

For a white woman from Tennessee, I think we can all agree she could be guilty of so many much more awful things than just disagreeably-conceptualized music. I'm not looking that gift horse in the mouth, feel me?

Makes sense. Sometimes you have to grade on a curve.

My prediction is if Trump gets reelected - lots of right-wing garbage site like The Federalist will go fully mask off. They'll openly talk about putting God (in other words Christianity) into schools, banning contraception, ending what they call the gay agenda, removing people they don't like from public life, etc. And they'll intimate that violence is justified to "fix" society. Libs will be shocked (shocked!) by this development. They're act as though they thought Trump could do fascism on day one all by himself.

Right now right-wing sites are chomping at the bit to go fully mask off but they can't go there now. Instead they do weird stuff like attack Parton. She is a broadly beloved figure. And it's not as if she's got some kind of controversial baggage or she's some kind of "culture warrior". She does stuff like fund libraries for kids. The writer is a nasty piece of human garbage who hates people not exactly like her.

i'm so tired of these christian nationalist freaks being taken seriously, can we please just exile them to Patmos and have a normal society?

Some real return-to-sender shit 🤣

We need to bring back the Reddit atheists.

These shit stains need a good bullying. My culture is not your angsty teenage rebel phase.

Usually the federalist goes more for the bloodthirsty capitalist angle than the kkkristian one

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago

I think they're hoping, praying, and planning ahead to Trump 2.0 where batshit fundie-ism rules the day. When the GOP justices "find" a structure in The Holy Constitution that decrees they are righteous and correct in banning conception on a federal level. The Federalist will then write ridiculous and hypocritical articles where they say with a straight face that the justices' rank and foul religiosity should - cough - trump the literal name of their site.

Do americans despise thinking with their own brains or something?

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

They'd rather think with their dicks, if you take a look at what they say... lmao...

[–] M68040@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago (1 children)

…and these people wonder why I don’t want to do things their way. Bunch of wet blankets.

In some weird way, let them show their ass like this behind their “epic troll” chanspeak.

CHUDs are the Pearl-clutching fun police at best and all literal orcs born to destroy everything in sight in service to their dark lord at worst.

The sooner more everyday people see them less as edgy rebels against ‘wokeness’ and more as a bunch of smug, holier-than-thou Karens, the better.

The right has gained a lot of ground by weaponizing moral envy against us, so we can weaponize moral envy against them. We’re like the oh so tolerant meat-eaters, we just want people to be able to “sin” in peace without being judged.

Did... Did they unironically namedrop Stephen Colbert, thinking his Bill O'Reilly persona was earnest?

[–] Crowtee_Robot@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago

He's also irl one of those liberal Catholics like Tim Kaine or Biden.
