/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

I dunno. I'm gonna say it wasn't complete trash. It's still better than Nemesis.

[–] evidences@lemmy.world 27 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The problem with 5 is that it was the the movie directly following 4 and 5 lacked whales so it was doomed from the start.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago

True, 4 did indeed have whales in the sky, just like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. There were zero references to towels or intergalactic highways in Star Trek 5.

I certainly had an easier time believing Laurence Luckinbill was Leonard Nimoy's half-brother than I did believing that Tom Hardy was Patrick Stewart's clone.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Thank you for saying that! When Nemesis came out and for years afterwards people praised Tom Hardy. I seemed to be the only one who disliked it.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

He was fine in terms of performance because he's a decent actor, he just did not in any way convince me he was a Picard clone. You could claim that this was because of his time with the Remans or whatever, but it just seemed like a needless plot idea that just didn't work. In fact, if Shinzon was just a rebel Romulan, it might have been a better movie.

First time I ever watched it I completely missed that he was supposed to be Picard. He was just an annoying bad guy to me. He just does not look or act like him at all. Great actor. Wrong part.

Off-road dune buggy's! Off-road dune buggy's! Mounted laser gun!

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Those 2 are generally regarded as the bottom of the barrel.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Where does Generations rank?

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 23 points 5 months ago (2 children)

The scummy layer just above them.

[–] constantokra@lemmy.one 8 points 5 months ago

Hard disagree, but you still got my upvote because of Garak.

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 5 months ago (2 children)

It's faint praise but I agree. I tried to rewatch Nemesis during lock down and didn't make it to the end.

[–] MintyAnt@lemmy.world 10 points 5 months ago

For the best, given how depressing the end is

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 months ago

You know, I’d personally rate V above Nemesis, Insurrection, Generations, and Into Darkness… and that still feels like very faint praise. Star Trek has had some pretty lousy movies over the years.

better than Nemesis

Excuse me? Nemesis had a cool crash scene in it

[–] pancakes@sh.itjust.works 12 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

Exactly. It also has pretty nice cover art too!

Edit: I just thought of another good thing about Nemesis. The DRV/ Blu Ray versions can be used as a Frisby!

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

Also works as a coaster for those huge coffee mugs.

[–] accideath@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

That’s not an advantage compared to V. V’s Laser Disc release makes a far better frisbee.

[–] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

Picard TNG: I allowed myself to be abducted by aliens, spent two days forced to defend myself with an alien against a monster, refused all offers to just go home, and dealt with his babbling about Tamak and Jiled at Tongra. All because I recognize that peace and corporation between species is much more important compared to my life. I understand that I am not god and I don't make a decision who lives and dies. I have faith in the inherit goodness and rationality of sentient life so even if I don't understand why they are doing something I know they have a good reason. I am an explorer and an ambassador of peace.

Picard Nemesis: I am going to drive around on a planet and if some alien, possibly just defending their home, growls at me I will shoot them with a gun. Then leave their corpse there making zero effort to understand why they even attacked me. I am a thug who only understands how to kill effectively. Send me into battle and I will make sure there are no survivors.

But what does God needs with a starship?

[–] rovingnothing29@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 4 points 5 months ago

I actually like this part a lot.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Was this article ghost written by Shatner?

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 11 points 5 months ago

The first two thirds of The Final Frontier is actually a really fun movie... It's just the final third of the movie that makes it... Well... Lame. It's just lame.

From the making of videos (I used to own a 2 CD DVD box set), and it seems they ran out of budget and ran out of ideas eventually.

[–] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Sybok is Spock's brother from another mother.

That is all.

[–] ulkesh@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (2 children)

If compared to The Motion Picture, I agree. But that’s quite a low bar.

Though I do like that they included a nod to Star Trek V in Strange New Worlds.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You clearly have not seen the new version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I highly recommend watching it.

[–] cordlesslamp 3 points 5 months ago (3 children)

What do you mean "new version"? Are they remastered it or something? I can't seem to find where to purchase it.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

They might be talking about the director's cut, which is definitely an improvement. I'd still call it a weaker entry in the franchise, but far better than Star Trek V.

Aside from it being a little on the dull side, I think TMP's biggest sin is suffering from being from the era of disco fashion.

Did DeForest Kelley have an 'everyone must see my chest' contract or something?

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

TMP is the one where every dude's package can be clearly seen in the jumpsuits, right? I swear you can tell whether or not Decker is circumcised in a few scenes.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 6 points 5 months ago

It's the version where Spock steps on Khan's tail in the hanger scene.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Maybe two years ago a 4k recut came out on Paramount Plus. It really was a better movie; they left in scenes that made the whole thing make more sense than the original version. I highly recommend you watch it especially if you don’t care for the original.

Sybok

(He's the dude T'pring is trying to rehab)

[–] fox2263@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Ah yes of course

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

They've adapted.
