They don't scare you enough? Imagine them as Eldritch abominations.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 55 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Limousine spider.

They also appear to be smart, aggressive, and territorial. I have been chased by several. And I have run away with great haste.

Well I guess sleep is optional tonight

[–] chatokun@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 5 months ago

Odd, I've had several in my room in my last place, but they didn't seem territorial or aggressive to humans. Sometimes too close I'd worry I'd hurt it but other than that...

[–] SomeGuy69@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Limousine spider. Great! I'll never forget that anymore for life. Haha

I would far rather the spiders in my house eat these things.

[–] Fester@lemm.ee 47 points 5 months ago

A house centipede is just 4 spiders in a trench coat.

[–] PopOfAfrica@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago

Straight up I leave Wolf Spiders alive for this goal.

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I don't think they can. Once a centipede is of decent size I think it's much stronger than the average house Spider. Australia notwithstanding.

[–] macrocephalic@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Can confirm that our house spiders are pretty tough. A car ran off the road and into the front wall of my house spider last year and it barely left a mark. We still live here.

Why not both?

[–] cordlesslamp 3 points 5 months ago

I don't think house spider eat cockroaches. I would worship them if they could.

[–] Pandantic@midwest.social 30 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

I think these bois, much like “spider crickets”, get a lot of flack because their legs are TOO DAMN LONG! They’re cool dudes, but something about those weirdly long legs…

[–] Land_Strider@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Hey, they are the fluffiest critters ever among those that ran over me. They don't even tickle, just a smooth touch.

Developes feelings for the house centipedes

[–] Cris_Color@lemmy.world 29 points 5 months ago

I doubt this will help my deep discomfort but it did make me happy :)

[–] flicker@lemmy.world 27 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's their suddenness that freaks me out. I had been sitting on my couch for two hours the other night when one scuttled out from beneath my feet!

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 5 months ago

this is why i respect web spinning spiders and jumping spiders (despite the name).

web spinners just spin their webs and sit there, they're in their lane and flourishing.

jumping spiders are smart enough to recognize that we are gods compared to them, and that we probably won't appreciate them making sudden fast movements.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 18 points 5 months ago

nope doesnt help, imma get my flame thrower nevertheless

[–] FarFarAway@startrek.website 17 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I was in college before I saw one. I grew up with giant 8" long centipedes, but this guy freaked me out more than I can say. Couldn't even tell it was a centipede. Might as well have been an alien.

Gag.

Freaky motherfookers

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 5 months ago

it's the legs and speed that do it, normal centipedes are plenty freaky but the fact that the legs are stubbier makes them much more managable, they're more like seeing a wild rat.

all they need to do is stop being so scary and we can be chillin

[–] OceanSoap@lemmy.ml 14 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I'm not really scared of them, but I do have a visceral reaction to them. Something about them makes me want to vomit. Or, maybe it's a level of fear I don't recognize because I go from 0 to vomit and wanting to claw my eyes out real quick.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 5 months ago

it's wild because humans are supposed to have this sort of reaction programmed into us for snakes, but i'm absolutely fine with snakes and even find some of them quite cute!

but anything with long thin legs? incinerate it in nuclear hellfire

[–] nepenthes@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

I feel ya. When I find them in the garden, where one expects to find a multitude of bugs, it gives me the heebie jeebies soo bad. It's def the zillions of legs going mach 9 for me.

[–] Shou@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Texbook phobia.

[–] rockerface@lemm.ee 13 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Centipedes with legs? Believe it or not, straight to Dark Souls

The last point is the important one. If you're regularly seeing these in your house that means they've found a food source: your house is infested with another insect they're keeping at bay.

[–] Socsa@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago

They won't actually beat back an infestation though. They are too territorial.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 9 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I caught one trying to be in my bathroom and decided to be "nice" by tossing it into my basement.

Down there the entire floor had been sprayed with insect repellent from signs of fleas and roaches, there has been signs of mice and lord knows what else down there too.

2 days later I found it dead having made it all the way to the staircase. Definitely one of the strongest showings in the Gauntlet but not strong enough.

[–] nxdefiant@startrek.website 6 points 5 months ago

what the fuck are you gonna do the first time something makes it up the stairs? I hope you have a flamethrower ready.

[–] flora_explora@beehaw.org 3 points 5 months ago

That's so mean :'(

[–] librejoe@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

They are not 100% harmless than can and have bitten humans.

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 months ago

Side note, do not stomp AT them in bare feet (in an attempt to scare them off). They will attack your toes

[–] Semjaza@lemmynsfw.com 8 points 5 months ago (2 children)

While centipedes are fine, I've always been much more of a milipede fan.

[–] cordlesslamp 7 points 5 months ago

ngl, I think millipede is kinda cute. I'm thinking about building a terrarium tank and keep a few of them as pet.

[–] herrcaptain@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

It's weird how when they have even more legs somehow they become less creepy. I guess it's because they have to pack them in so tight and it starts to almost become cute.

[–] WhoaDang@reddthat.com 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] herrcaptain@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You know, until you posted this comic I never really put it together that millipedes are generally not predators. I guess that also explains why I've always instinctively found them less scary than centipedes.

[–] WhoaDang@reddthat.com 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yep, millipedes are chill and mostly munch on dead plant material. Centipedes, on the other hand, are carnivorous little demons straight from a nightmare.

Case in point

I'll say it: milipedes are cute.

[–] MeDuViNoX@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I like them just the way they are.

[–] Shou@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)
[–] derpgon@programming.dev 2 points 5 months ago

Look at the cute rollerblades!

[–] NutWrench@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

When you're a centipede, EVERY day is Leg Day!

[–] Ioughttamow@kbin.run 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

A few of these lithe fellows and Moria would still be the crowning jewel of the misty mountains

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 6 points 5 months ago

Idk if this helps. I just feel kinda itchy now

[–] Shhalahr@beehaw.org 6 points 5 months ago

Silverfish. They eat silverfish, and that is why I am on Team Silverware.
