I swear to god dude, out of all things that will precipitate the balkanization of USA, it’s Trump losing, it’s officially clown fiesta of a reality.

It’s 2024, tomatoes are 25 dollars a pound and a dozen eggs costs a 15 year mortgage, we are absolutely fucked if this is what mobilizes this country.

If Harris wins, political violence is certain in this country . . . because she's a cop who has promised to close the border and will continue with the genocide.

jetski dealership owners and landlords are pretty motivated to not do insurrections, nobody buys skidoos when there's shooting the in streets and rent does not get paid on time

People are torqued up, people are willing to kill one another (I mean they already have), but no one wants to die for anything in America. Or suffer dysentery. If you're a chud, is it really worth giving up the lifted truck for slumming it in the woods and getting some weird disease like legionairres foot? So you can, what, shoot a black person or a queer person??

I don't think they could survive contact with military curfew where they can't just go to the city hall and complain and push a few people around like they did for mask mandates. I don't think any of these people have really thought through what a civil war or even just some heightened low grade warfare tensions (like The Troubles) would mean.

These are the same freaks that thought COVID "lockdowns" was communism. I doubt they'd be able to survive a curfew for very long.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago

Communism is when you are politely asked not to gather in Golden Corral or intentionally cough on people because they are wearing a mask

I have been thinking about how much Republican causes nowadays are just vapor, because they stemmed from thoroughly isolated echo chambers pumping partial info. It is hard to translate into any consequential action because it too easily peters out from a public challenge.

The overwhelming majority of conservatives pledging political violence if Trump loses are not actually going to do anything about it. People who live relatively comfortable lives are not going to risk it all because they are afraid of trans people and immigration, deep down they know that those issues don't actually affect them personally so they'll keep putting on a show about it. They know they will endure another Democrat presidency just fine.

I personally think that the January 6th arrests will prove to be a strong deterrent for everyone except the most exceptionally brainwormed individuals, and the FBI is probably keeping tabs on those folks already. We will see a temporary increase in Proud Boy-esque action and it will return to baseline levels within a month of inauguration.

The example of white nationalist riots in the UK does have me worried, but the US doesn't have the same urbanized white underclass that the UK has. The US certainly has a lot of reactionaries, but they're either dispersed in rural areas or dispersed in the suburbs. They can't easily be cajoled into spontaneous violence.

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago

The few times proud boys have shown up, they break down pretty quickly when confronted with organized counter protest/regular protest - unless the cops are on their side, but then that's just the cops

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The exurbs surround the cities

[–] JohnBrownsBussy2@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

The reliance on personal transportation to get from A to B changes the class character, and thus actions, of unrest and dissidents in the US. Compare the various actions during 2020, the urban-based George Floyd uprisings, and the right-wing anti-lockdown and Stop-the-Steal movements. Raising the barrier to entry by adding an hour-plus driving time, and more importantly risking your own car getting damaged, limits who's attending demonstrations and limits their tenor. Obviously, you have events like Charlottesville and January 6th, but those were pre-planned events put together by an array of right-wing organizations working in relative concert. There may be a lot of angry racists in the American exurbs, but there's a limited number of far-right ideologues who are going to invest the time and personal risk.

They’ll continue to harass public events like school meetings and complain about rainbows and threaten to kill random kids’ parents at Target and organize Rorschach Klan rallies.

[–] Owl@hexbear.net 27 points 3 months ago

Win or lose, they'll totally do something like Jan 6th or the Charlottesville rally, both of which caused fewer deaths than some school shootings, which we apparently just treat as a normal fact of life these days, so, like, whatever.

Nah, he emanates loser energy.

[–] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Especially if he does in fact lose. These people are all about aesthetics, and very few of them are going throw down for an octogenarian two-time loser who doesn't even really represent their ideology. They'll start looking for their next charismatic leader. They were on the Trump train because he was winning, not because they actually love him ("they" being the serious fascists, as opposed to the regular suburbanite fash-lite).

[–] Barabas@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago (1 children)

More likely that the far right will start doing things if he wins imo.

[–] machiabelly@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Its like that in sports. Its way more dangerous to be a fan of the visiting team when the home team wins. People who start senseless violence are generally cowards who want an excuse to use violence to feel empowered. Fighting for a loser just doesn't hit the same way for them.

[–] TemutheeChallahmet@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I would say that in this particular case a second Trump loss can be spun into "another stolen future" or some shit and galvanize MAGAs to riot more than they would if he won.

[–] machiabelly@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That would make some sense. Without a trump win the GOP is directionless. There could be death throes(not that the gop is actually dying) that take the form right wing violence.

But think about how bad riots and stochastic terrorism would be after each crisis that happened during his presidency.

I dont know how to find numbers for hate crimes and political violence after his win in 2016, but that'd be the best reference point.

[–] TemutheeChallahmet@hexbear.net 1 points 3 months ago

They went up but a lot of it was against Asians during COVID, so he certainly stoked volatile climates.

[–] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Every time they tried to actually do any real direct action, they got their asses handed to them by anti fascists, so I think they're a lot less eager to rumble than they were. Also, the serious far right will drop Trump like a hot rock as soon as he stops looking like an easy path to power. He's a convenient conduit, not somebody they actually believe in. I'd expect to continue to see steady stochastic terrorism incidents, but nothing really organized (and we'll keep getting those no matter who wins).

Small business tyrants and boaters will make a lot of noise and probably sue, but I think they'll stop short of doing anything more than that because of their material interests.

[–] Mousy@hexbear.net 15 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I doubt anything would happen but I do wonder who would be the fascist figurehead after trump kicks the bucket. I can't imagine it being vance or any other assortment of goobers that ride on trump's coat tails.

[–] HakFoo@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 3 months ago

I'm assuming they'll tear the body to shreds like it was a holy relic. People will sell necklaces with a drop of preserved bile or a hair.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Rep party will probably go in shambles for a while until new pecking order is established.

[–] CommCat@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago

Musk sounds like the obvious successor to Trump

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago

Probably shoot up a school or two. Maybe a black church if they're feeling a little spicy

[–] RiotDoll@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago

i think the militarized right is decently willing to pop off, and i have anxiety about a coup attempt amounting to more than a limp dicked capitol riot tbh

but also most of them wouldn't dare fuck up their sacred constitution, holy and beyond scrutiny

[–] unmagical@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 months ago (6 children)

And what did the far right do last time he lost?

That seemed like more than a fart, why should I expect less this time?

[–] MaxOS@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Excuse me! Jan 6 was an INSURRECTION and a national tragedy.

[–] nat_turner_overdrive@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago

there was definitely more than a fart given the amount of shits taken in drawers ayooo

[–] OprahsedCreature@lemmy.ml 23 points 3 months ago

If the far right could manage to summon a credible threat I'd certainly feel some worry.

I'm not worried.

The last time he lost they busted into a public building during a private session and 99% acted like tourists strolling about and taking pictures. There was some light vandalism, and theft of documents, but it was mostly very average people larping as rebels and detectives. This resulted in Democrats going about business as usual, a bunch of criminal convictions, Trump still losing, and the Democrats going on the most cringe rhetoric for 4 years. Nothing fundamentally changed.

[–] Storm@hexbear.net 19 points 3 months ago

What happened on January 7th 2021?

[–] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago

It was a wet fart

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago

I guess it was, they shidded their doodoo asses.

[–] Deadend@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

I think Elon Musk will do something hilarious and the tech guys will have a meltdown.
