If it wasn't for the whole "siccing the national guard on BLM protesters" thing, I might even like this guy.

with live ammo, fyi, since that part seems to have been mostly memory-hole'd

And with such little training and direction that one got confused and used said live ammo on a car out past curfew. Could have been so much worse, literally only thing that saved it is 1) so many people worship the troops, even people who hate cops, and 2) nobody particularly wanted to get shot, and 3) their initial deployment was almost entirely escorting fire crews, who nobody really wanted to fuck with anyhow.

If they did a trump-style "send in the troops" and had them defending the precincts and such hand in hand with cops there would have been a massacre I swear on my life, but the initial deployment was slightly more cautious and the later deployments happened after chauvin was arrested and charged.

my friend is with this dude who generally has good anarchist politics but he says that he "told the national guard to stand down" and "that's why conservatives are saying he wants to let america burn" or some shit

Lying to the cops is cool and good.

True but drink driving and speeding are very bad and self centred things to do

[–] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Give people public transportation then

[–] Aradina@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Obviously yes, but people still drive drunk and speed in places with reliable public transit. Not to mention that the type of drunk to think that vehicular manslaughter is acceptable will also probably be a bit shit to ride with.

[–] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

You can't do that much damage in a train car versus behind the wheel. That said angry drunks and rude assholes can have a little bit of prison time as a treat. In all seriousness, if there is reliable public transport, then they should get their license taken away. At this point i mostly drink at home, and the few times we go out, we uber to and from.

And since his DUI he hasn’t taken a drink since. He learns properly from his mistakes.

[–] Aradina@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

That's good. I have respect for people who hit rock bottom in some way and can climb back up. Its not easy to do.

So he was 31 years old and he hasn't done it since. He is now 60.

Is this the best they got on him? Lmao

[–] SerLava@hexbear.net 49 points 1 month ago (2 children)

AND AND that night was literally the last drink of his life. Absolutely impressive

Can't even nominate a guy you'd like to get a beer with smdh

(Not that it stopped weirdos from saying shit like that about George fucking Bush)

[–] Boredom@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

Your sober white uncle who used to be alot cooler but had to tame himself for his own good grindcore.

Let’s say Waltz is truly the lesser of two evil. What makes anyone think he’ll be allowed to have any influence behind the scenes? He was chosen to appeal to people exactly like OOP who think changing the american entity is possible by simply being a guy you can have a beer with. He’ll meekly dissent on sending pinkertons to beat workers while the president sits back and relax because the economic and voter benefits outweigh some uppity emplpyees complaining.

megacope answer: kamala is always zooted and this guy has a vow of sobriety

[–] edge@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

I think if he actually mattered he'd be the presidential candidate, not the running mate.

[–] sysgen@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

It's moreso the reverse, having a VP that opposes the president especially on foreign policy allows them to collude against the White House. This was a big problem in the Obama administration with Biden frustrating Obama's foreign policy at times.

Dems acknowledging memes is always fucking cringe, now here we are. Idk what's happening

[–] sweatersocialist@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

[–] InquisitiveApathy@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

This is the alternate timeline that I want to see

He’s still quietly very pro-Israel but better than Shapiro. Also almost the anti-Vance in terms of appearing like a normal guy.

I’m a bit disappointed it wasn’t Beshear.

He’s term limited out of being governor of Kentucky and is unlikely to be able to win a senate seat there. His Lt Governor, she might have had a boost in her chances (given Beshear won by a slim margin).

A dem governor in Kentucky as we saw with Beshear can mitigate some of the worst transphobia there. Which is why I liked him, even though he was boring Christian moderate (with no doubt a bunch of shitty opinions), the fact he seemed to take every opportunity to unprompted state that the republican transphobia was evil and cruel.

Wow, that's 2 politics. What is going on?
