American are illiterate and politically incoherent, so I understand the pervasive media illiteracy.

but this show was making its points with a sledgehammer since the first moments and does not let up.

this guy is the equivalent of a dude staring at a billboard that has a picture of his driver's license with "Kyle Jenkins, You Are A Dumbass" for 4 years before furrowing his brow and saying, "I think this sign is insulting me."

it's really hard for me to watch all the body horror in that show, but the little details of anti-union/pro-capital propaganda in the world, and the constant wiping of the ass on culture war tropes cracks me up. the ice skating musical in this latest season was magnificent.

Homelander dates a literal Nazi, figures out she's a Nazi and is totally cool with it. It's never been a subtle show.

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 39 points 3 months ago

The Nazi's name was literally Stormfront lmao

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 27 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

This is the kind of guy to be like 'Metal Gear isn't political'

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago

It takes a lot of firepower to break the barrier protecting the CHUD hivemind from reality.

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The ice skating was also my favorite lmao.

[–] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago

I lost it at LGBTurkey legs in Brave Maeve's Inclusive Kingdom

[–] radio_free_asgarthr@hexbear.net 54 points 3 months ago

It was woke from the start. Notice how they cast Karl URBAN and not Karl RURAL!

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 27 points 3 months ago (1 children)

"pro anti patriacharchy"

amerikkka-clap

This is another fucking The Last Jedi situation where S3 and S4 aren't great but it has nothing to do with "woke politics", it's because the showrunners want a paycheck and drag out a story that could have been done at least one season ago.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Really wish they kept the 'Homelander tries to lead a supe rebellion against the government only for it to fail miserably because they're all miserable fuck-ups' plot from the comic

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Eh, the jacking off of the military was too much for me.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago

That's Garth Ennis for you, he's a real "The Troops are the Real Heroes " guy

[–] Black_Mald_Futures@hexbear.net 25 points 3 months ago

AREN'T THERE PEOPLE OTHER THAN YOUR FAMILY WHO WILL TRY TO INDOCTRINATE YOU

Yeah, like the fucking puppet show??? idiot??? christ

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago (4 children)

I mean, I do think it went downhill, but the "woke" stuff has been there since the beginning. That one scene with Huey in Tek Knight's basement was really unpleasant, it's a large part of why I don't like the new season.

[–] Philosophosphorous@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago (2 children)

yea im kinda sick of getting recommended stuff and discovering scenes like that. between the boys, the 3d berserk anime, and watching the movie flesh and blood recently, all the media friends are exposing me to is basically having a negative overall impact on my psyche. i don't know how to tell people that the media they are showing me is traumatizing me without coming across as some kind of anti-fun prude who can't enjoy anything, no matter how politely and gently i try to explain.

[–] Egon@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Here's some movies for you which do not have scenes "like that", though they might still deal with some heavy themes.

Cherry Blossoms (2008)

Broken Circle Breakdown

Flickering Lights (Contains animal cruelty, violence and a young and very greasy Mads Mikkelsen)

The Fall Guy

The Nice Guys

12 Angry Men

Around Cape Horn (very cool documentary, does also have some animal cruelty)

The Triplets of Belleville

Lola Rennt

Amadeus (It almost has a scene like that where Amadeus wife is made to have sexual relations with his superior, but then his superior gets mad because she's cool with it)

Goodbye Lenin

Die Welle

Victoria (does have sex, if I recall correctly)

Pans Labyrinth

The Labyrinth (has David Bowie in a very tight outfit)

Rumble in the bronx (1995)

Battle at Lake Changjin

Another Round

Troll hunter

Force Majeure

Ford Vs Ferrari

The intouchables (white saviour trope though)

Souls Kitchen

A somewhat Gentle Man

[–] orshelack@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Triplets of Belleville is one of my all time favorite movies

[–] Egon@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

So good, I love that style and vibe of animation. Its like a feature length Double King

[–] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

My partner and I just got recommended a film 'about sexworkers' that the most revolting violent sexscene I've ever seen. Shit kinda freezes you, my trick is just saying 'I'm skipping this' and fast fwding

the boys literally gave me a week of nightmares because of the ott gore lol

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

It went too far with all the gore this time imo. I have a pretty high tolerance for that kind of stuff but this show just keeps trying to outdo itslef and it's starting to really annoy me

I think showrunnes are now realising what kind of gross stuff they can put out on online streaming platforms and a lot of them have absolutely no restraint. Reminds me of that south park episode where they tried to say the word "fuck" as much as possible after TV stations lifted a lot of restrictions they had on swearing

[–] Tiocfaidhcaisarla@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

I was wondering whether to watch this season or not, but your comment convinced me not to. The gore has always been a bit upsetting to me, and if that's ratcheted up this season alongside being more aggressively lib I'm good on that.

So thank you

[–] Edamamebean@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I've not seen season 4 but let me guess. The showrunners for some reason decided they needed more horrific depictions of supe rape?

[–] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They did a heckin' kink discourse

Also depicted a niche internet meme fetish posted to Something Awful back in like 2009

[–] da_gay_pussy_eatah@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Cake farts! Didn't Better Call Saul do that also with Squat Cobbler? But they were much more tasteful with it, imo

[–] Sulvor@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Yeah, the gore doesn’t really bother me, but him being restrained like that was extremely uncomfortable. The tickling shit made me squirm in my seat.

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 16 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Just finished season 4 and really don't think much changed in how they represented the themes and politics. It's always been the least subtle show I've watched in that regard, its just that now more than ever the real world looks more and more like an irony poisoned show.

[–] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago

It's about as subtle as a 1980s Paul Verhoeven flick turned up to 11.

[–] Elon_Musk@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Uh didn't season 2 have a Nazi character named Stormfront?

Did the comicbook not have similar themes?

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago (3 children)

It did!

Everyone always remembers the crude humor and violence, but it was also a fairly sharp satire of post 9/11 USA, it's celebrity worship and protestant religious fervor

Personally, I think they're kind of stuck grinding their wheels with Homelander as Trump, but at least it's not as bad as Hunters got where they put Hitler on trial and had him yelling Trump quotes verbatim

[–] camaron30@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago (2 children)

They did WHAT?!?!?!?

Thank god i stopped after season 1. The story was boring and it felt to me that they didn't know wether to be a powerful drama about the memory of the holocaust or an hyperviolent anti-nazi fantasy.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

Yeah, it's another example of libs hemming and hawing about the morality of killing Nazis

When, let's be real, holy shit, in the show they were actually planning on killing millions with a biological weapon, you don't get to be like "They should go to prison, because that's real justice"

[–] Tiocfaidhcaisarla@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

I could only do 1 episode, can't believe it got another season and that's what they did with it.

You hit it right with them not knowing what to make of it, comic nazi villainy and sorrowful remembrance is a tough line to walk that they didn't seem to hit and also probably doesn't need to be done. Schindler's List meets Wolfenstein ass stuff

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

where they put Hitler on trial and had him yelling Trump quotes verbatim

s4 of the boys has a bunch of direct quotes of republican officials and media people, i guess that's slightly less on the nose than literally hitler.

[–] Elon_Musk@hexbear.net 3 points 3 months ago

If they mocked anyone but Trump would the audience even understand the message?

[–] Kuori@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

Did the comicbook not have similar themes?

not really, to my understanding. the comic is mostly all the disgusting edgelord bullshit from the show multiplied a dozen times over (from what i've read about it)

[–] AShadyRaven@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Is there a pill or some exercises i can do so that posts like this one dont make me want to tear someone's limbs off

[–] Kuori@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago

i can think of exactly one form of exercise that could help in satiating this urge nazi-punching

[–] Philosophosphorous@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

counterintuitively the kind of regular physical exercise that would make tearing someone's limbs off easier usually also has positive mental effects as well

[–] UltraGreen@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago

You hate the show because you think it's "LGBT propaganda" I hate the show because it's Amazon superhero slop. We are not the same.

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Sorry but this is the_dunk_tank rule 8 kinda stuff. I get that you're making an effort, but I see the_dunk_tank leaking after rule 8 started. Sorry to gripe.

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Rule 8 continues to be a mistake.

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Personally I got really tired of the "oh look at this random reddit comment" and it seems like a lot of other posters feel the same.

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

And a lot of other posters don't. So yeah.

[–] TemutheeChallahmet@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

I feel like these people who watch stuff like Critical Drinker get a respite from feeling uncool and maladapted to society by finally railing against stuff and getting attention for it. They derive pleasure from finding kinship in worthless grievances which prevents them from focusing on better things. They are being robbed of the experience of interacting awkwardly with the general public, learning you are a loser for some understandable reasons and correcting yourself and having more productive fixations.
