"Born in the USA" was certainly a choice, I'm not sure if they are aware of the context and making some kind of weird point or just as clueless as every city's fireworks committee.

"Born to Run" is such an obvious pick when casting votes for someone running for president that it actually makes me angry they did this.

There was no chance Texas was going to be anything other than Beyonce

I love the contrast in inspiration for choices...

Tennessee: 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton

Country music star Dolly Parton was born in Pittman Center, Tenn., and currently lives just outside of Nashville. Her Dollywood theme park and resorts are located in Pigeon Forge.

...

Rhode Island: Shake it Off - Taylor Swift

Swift owns the single most expensive home in the state of Rhode Island — an entire estate called High Watch, which she purchased in 2013.

High Watch was built with oil money. Plus see the end bit - Emphasis mine.

High Watch

The house was built in 1929–1930 for the Snowden family, owners of an oil company, who named it Holiday House. It was purchased in 1948 by Rebekah Harkness, socialite and Standard Oil heiress, who became notorious amongst the local residents for her lavish lifestyle there. In 1974, businessman Gurdon B. Wattles purchased and renovated the house, renaming it as High Watch due to its location.

Swift purchased the house for US$17,750,000 in 2013, and in 2020, inspired by its history and Harkness, released the song "The Last Great American Dynasty" which tells a story loosely based on Rebekah’s life. Several stalking, trespassing, and home invasion incidents have been reported at the house since Swift's purchase.

In 2015, High Watch inspired a proposal by the then-Governor of Rhode Island, Gina Raimondo, to impose a luxury tax on expensive secondary homes in the state but was quickly withdrawn following criticism that claimed such a tax would be detrimental to the state's tourism industry.

In 2017, Swift was sued by her neighbors over her decision to build a seawall on the beach as plaintiffs argued the beach had been dedicated to the public over the years and Swift had no ownership of it; the courts ruled in Swift's favor, asserting the seawall prevents coastal erosion.

Nevada should have played "My Life is like a Video Game" (the band that made it is from there)

In hindsight, I should've just assumed that the occupation regime in Mni Sota Makoce would've been represented by Prince. I remember going to some sort of Prince exhibit at a museum when I was in the area around Bdóte as a teenager, this would've been not too long after he died. I don't actually have that much of a relationship to Prince aside from that one Animaniacs joke and knowing the whole deal about his name and general persona, but I probably should actually try listening to his music. I might as well start with the song used here, I guess...

If you’re getting into Prince, I have to recommend his super bowl halftime show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WYYlRArn3g

It’s one of my favorite musical performances ever. And it’s only 12 minutes!

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Alright so I'd already listened to three Prince songs by the time I read this, and I was ready to say his music just wasn't for me, but this halftime show you've sent me legitimately fucks.

[–] PapaEmeritusIII@hexbear.net 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

It fucks so hard!!!

I also recommend this “press conference” he did before the super bowl, in which he put on a show instead of actually answering any press questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjxHZ5Od7zs
