"Enshittification will continue until revenue improves"

[–] RiQuY@lemm.ee 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] vanontom@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Revenue improves. "We did it! But... line must always go up!? More!" Enshittification will continue until death occurs.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 58 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Jokes on them, I don't have any.

Oh. I made myself sad.

[–] 3ntranced@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

It's okay, Team Snapchat is the only person that sends me anything either (>•_•)><3

[–] infeeeee@lemm.ee 35 points 2 weeks ago (7 children)

Is snapchat still a thing? Never used that but I thought from screenshots and memes that tiktok killed it (never used that either)

[–] Roldyclark@literature.cafe 14 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Gen Z loves it for some reason

[–] thebestaquaman@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I never understood that. Apparently they use it as a primary way of messaging each other? At least that's what younger relatives have told me. I've tried to have them explain what makes the app designed to hide/delete stuff after it's been read better for communication, but so far haven't gotten an explanation I could make any sense of.

[–] Roldyclark@literature.cafe 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah my brother says its the main way to talk to girls, which sexting was its original purpose so makes sense. But also the streak system and ease of picture messaging I think keeps people using it.

I guess I'm too boomer to understand it, because I hate the idea of "picture messaging." Text is so much easier to interact with...

Tbh I only know 2-3 people who use it actively. Most use instagram DMs. I like snapchat for the face filters though

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago

Nobody I know my age (early 30s) uses it any more. Instagram stories killed Snapchat stories. I don't know if Instagram has a disappearing messages option though.

[–] sheridan@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I think it's still used a lot for private messaging?

[–] noodlejetski@lemm.ee 20 points 2 weeks ago
[–] Player2@lemm.ee 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I think you mean 'direct' messaging

[–] sheridan@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Maybe. I've only known Snapchat used for sending pictures of one's privates, which is quite direct now that I think about it.

Mt family/friend group use it as a way to send pics/videos since MMS isn't great for that... at least that's what they say, I don't have it.

[–] xpinchx@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Definitely, I have a few group chats. It's good for general memery and snapping funny things throughout the day.

[–] Telorand@reddthat.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

Me throughout my day:

[–] turkalino@lemmy.yachts 3 points 2 weeks ago

I asked the same question, my friends all abandoned it for Instagram years ago, but I (an American) am seeing a lot of Europeans using it during my travels

Headline: Social Media Service Announces Ridiculous Enshittification Plan

Me: ? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] 21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Somebody asked where they could find me on social media the other day and my response was "strange places using fake names". Eventually turned into me trying to pitch the fediverse but it kinda landed in much the way birds don't.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

At least you had a towel with you.

Always know where your towel is.

[–] InternetUser2012 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Aaaaand that's going to be it for snapchat. FUCK the greed, fuck your ads. FUCK your analytics.

Well if this happens I'm getting rid of it. Yeah I'm older and I use it. But it's great for the girlfriend and I to quickly send messages and nsfw things. Now that I think about it, I only use it because of her.

These ads will be the last straw. The stupid AI chatbot forces itself to the top of your list already, and above that, they throw in a stupid Snapchat+ ad! Oh yeah, in order to delete the AI bot as a friend, you need Snapchat+....

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 27 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

nsfw things

Why would you use unencrypted social media for that?

You do understand that Snapchat keeps a copy?

Use signal which has temporary messages

Are they stupid? In fairness, I don't know how they're making any money at all. I've never seen anyone interact with the discover feed and therefore see ads. There really isn't a way to monetize Snapchat without killing it off.

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 13 points 2 weeks ago

Swim in the swamp, you'll get leeches

[–] swan@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Remember Snapchat had the cool feature of showing you "today, X years ago"?
Why did they fuck that up and you get random collages now. It was such a great feature that they have now ruined

[–] Ibuthyr@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 weeks ago

Isn't that what Google photos does too? I'm slowly degoogling but I must say, I do enjoy that feature. It kinda gives purpose to the random pictures one takes.

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I wish we made more offensive memes using established brands that way we can keep their ads out of our online spaces

[–] the_post_of_tom_joad@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I would like it very much if the first thing that came up in a casual search for any business was sweaty rule 34 fantasies

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

Company logos on buttplugs, the advertisement of the future.

Not his car belongs to the CEO of a similarly named company that makes vape juice https://www.tmz.com/2017/12/02/snapchat-ceo-evan-mistaken-identity-bad-driver-lamborghini/

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 5 points 2 weeks ago

Oh no enshittification in crap I don't use. The horror!

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I know social media shows us stuff it wants us to see, but Snapchat shows the absolute worst shit, it has never once shown me something I'd ever want to see. It really is the most ratchet app.

My god why do I still have it, I gotta talk to my therapist about this

[–] TJDetweiler@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hey it's me, your therapist. It's for the nudes.

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

God you're right, this is why I pay you the big bucks

Anyone know of any alternatives with similar functionality?

[–] phoneymouse@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Signal has stories. Never seen anyone use them though.

[–] affiliate@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

telegram has “secret chats” that let you set a self destruct timer for all messages sent in those chats. i don’t know of many other alternatives. and even telegram isn’t a drop in replacement, but it could work, depending on what you’re looking for

[–] devfuuu@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Just use Signal with disappearing messages feature turned on?

[–] affiliate@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

that sounds like a better choice to be honest. i haven’t used signal much and i didn’t know they supported that sort of thing

[–] TexMexBazooka@lemm.ee 4 points 2 weeks ago

Honestly Snapchat was fun, but what killed it for me was when it started randomly adding/following users when my account was inactive for a while. So I’d start getting notifications about xyz posting, and I don’t even know who they are

I’m convinced they’re doing this to pad user activity

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

No it isn't: I don't use SnapChat!

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 2 points 2 weeks ago
[–] xelar@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

Is snapchat still relevant?
