What is the point of this little breast pocket near my left shoulder?

I have like 10 t-shirts with a tiny breast pocket right over my left nipple, and what am I supposed to put in there? I've never put fucking anything in this pocket, but it's always there with a tiny tag from whatever manufacturer made the shirt.

A copy of Mao's little red book, it's easily accessible and can be pulled out to smite liberals.

[–] Weedian@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

damn i gotta buy a copy of his book to do this now

[–] sexywheat@hexbear.net 36 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Pack of smokes 🤷‍♂️

[–] wtypstanaccount04@hexbear.net 23 points 2 months ago

Doubling down on this, I saw it being used for that purpose today

[–] OgdenTO@hexbear.net 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Naw, you're supposed to hold your pack of smokes in your rolled up shirtsleeve

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's where you keep your pens, like a true nerd. avgn

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Don't forget your pocket protector 🤓

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 26 points 2 months ago (2 children)

pens, pencils, slide rules, notebooks. I think it's a holdover from when we used to have analog math. You can store stuff in it and access it while you're sitting at a desk or whatever without standing up. This is all conjecture I don't actually know.

Yeah you’d have a pocket protector, a plastic or leather pouch holding your pen/s so they wouldn’t leak on your shirt or your compass would catch. Keeps them from falling out if you bend over. Usually have a compass, pen, pencil, ruler etc depending on your job.

My parents/older family members/friends and teachers had them before everything was computers and phones.

Related: why do baby clothes have pockets? What do they need to carry? Pretty rocks, sticks and sand of course, but whats the non-joking rationale behind giving babies pockets?

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Makes it easier to tell the back from the front, aesthetic purposes, and then baby likes to collect wood chips and stuff - in that order

[–] REgon@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

That makes a lot of sense!

[–] Weedian@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

I am a mailman. I keep so much shit in that pocket. Pens, markers, little thumb thimble that helps grip letters, employee id, sunglasses, cards to leave if someone isn’t home, airpod case… it’s actually a surprisingly spacious pocket lol.

Also I don’t smoke but for 90% of people who smoke who wear workwear that is the official pack of smokes pocket. In your pants pockets they get smooshed.

its true I keep my xros 3 in there diagonally and it fits perfect. when I put the little pocket flap down you can't even tell its there

[–] REgon@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago

It serves an aesthetic function by way of breaking up the uniform look of the front of your shirt, giving it some nice asymmetri.
The pocket used to be bigger so you could have a little note book or a pack of ciggies or something in it, but I've noticed shirt makers often make it unuseably small now.

So you can drop your phone in the toilet when you bend 90 degrees to flush

I work in the woods. I keep pens, a compass, a roll of flagging, and ear plugs in those pockets.

[–] Comrade_Mushroom@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

that's where I keep my beanis

[–] BobDole@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

I put my sunglasses in it (lenses in, one of the ear pieces out). It feels nicer than on top of my head or on my collar.

[–] CredibleBattery@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

[–] dannoffs@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago

[–] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

[–] CrispyFern@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago
[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

[–] pooh@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

I put my nicotine gum in shirt pockets.

[–] Sickos@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

Pens, for me, usually

[–] Weedian@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago
[–] wtypstanaccount04@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I put my phone in it so i can listen to tunes and podcasts without headphones

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, we did that with Mp3 players back before smart phones were a thing. CD players and cassette players were too bulky, they had to be worn on a belt, carried in a bag, carried in hand, or shoved in a pocket if you had a big enough pocket.

[–] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

The only purpose I've found is when I play card games with my friends and they ask me (for e.g.) hey ppintandclique where are your hand cards and I say huh? Handcards? Sorry, I only have pocket cards and then I take my cards out of the breast pocket

Gets a laugh every time

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think it's a hangover from the pocket watch days.

That or its for pens

[–] Hexboare@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

It's a fashion design element from when the pockets would be functional.

You don't really see them on dress shirts in either the UK or the USA, can't recall which.

[–] agentblaxploitation@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Sunglasses or qtips, spare joints or cigarettes (or lighters or papers), a lil cash for cover. Keys even. A receipt

I actually hate t shirts without one, it's incredibly handy. Pocket t shirts ftw
