I basically read what everyone here is quick to say to laugh at him at having gone from emperor to broomsweep, but apparently he was actually an example of an excellent success at bringing him down to earth with his fellow countrymen. No one here ever mentions this aspect; I only discovered this when I got curious and looked up his wikipedia page.

No one - here - ever mentions - this - aspect

In all seriousness I actually see almost nobody being like "haha what a loser he had to sweep the streets". I guess I just assumed everyone here knew his story already, it's been posted probably half a dozen times or more over the years and is referenced regularly. But its such a good story I don't mind seeing it crop up again. The anecdotes about him and his wife in this post actually made me tear up a little.

Admittedly I didn't see these sentiments (clearly I don't browse hexbear enough), but I have seen people here make fun of him for his fall from grace (though admittedly I couldn't remember the posts as it's been a while); his story after his change is absolutely touching to be honest, and the love he has for his wife must be something he could never have imagined before his reeducation.

All I got from this was puyi was a wife guy.

We're just doing screenshots of full wikipedia chapters now? Not even the pretense of being a link aggregator anymore?

Sir this is a shitposting forum

Hexbear has fallen

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

link aggregator

I'm just old enough not to understand what this means; is this like a class in fortnite or something from cyberpunk? I'm more into DnD to be honest.

Collector of links to content in other places.

It's when you collect legend of Zelda games

Puyi's story is a really wholesome and heartwarming one. This is the future I wish for most of today's rulers. They don't all have to go the way of the Romanovs.

"had a genious for creating an instant, disorderly mess around him." - relatable

[–] wtypstanaccount04@hexbear.net 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This is directly referenced in Viva La Vida by Coldplay, a song about a similar subject matter

"Now in the mornin', I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own"

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

which is directly referenced by the hit minecraft parody song "fallen kingdom" by captain sparkles

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

I kinda want to see an anime about this. Give it a terrible isekai title: "I used to be the ruler of the kingdom and now I sweep the streets"

[–] meatballs12345@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Do you think Coldplay's Viva la Vida was about the Emporer of China? Here's the first chorus:

I used to rule the world

Seas would rise when I gave the word

Now in the morning, I sleep alone

Sweep the streets I used to own

soviet-hmm

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's already a biographical film about him, The Last Emperor of China. Was actually pretty good, even shows him becoming a communist. The movie is pro-Dengist and is somewhat harsh on the Cultutal Revolution, however. Not sure if that matters to you.

[–] CommCat@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was gonna mention this, it shows his reeducation at the end. It's by Bernardo Bertolucci, who was a Marxist.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

It was also filmed on-location in China when the Dengist reforms were happening and the Chinese government wanted the movie made. Really interesting background story because the whole movie is in English.

Hataraku Maou sama if you want the ruler to suffer under capitalism as a Mc burger employee having delusions about ruling earth once he climbs up the ladder while starving, sharing a room with 3 people and being terrified about healthcare costs

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Does he have delusions about it? I got the impression that from the outset he seemed content in his new, simple way of life (I think one of his friends/generals seemed to want to go back to the other world for that)

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

Well he did have delusions at first about it but afterwards he was just content but kept getting dragged into the matters of heaven and hell. That particular general became a NEET hikkikomori and mooched off him and had the least bit of motivation to go back.

Vaguely related, "The Devil is a Part-Timer"

It is Wikipedia. I'd still be wary.
