Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

On this day in 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion took place when a force of 1400 Cuban exiles, funded and led by the U.S., landed on the southwest coast of Cuba in a failed attempt at overthrowing the revolutionary Cuban government.

Covertly financed and directed by the U.S. government, the operation took place at the height of the Cold War and its failure led to major shifts in international relations between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union.

The coup attempt came after the Cuban government expropriated property from American capitalists. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower allocated $13.1 million to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in March 1960 for use against Castro's government. With the aid of Cuban counter-revolutionaries, the CIA proceeded to organize an invasion.

On April 14th, 1961, a squadron of U.S. B-26 bombers camouflaged with Cuban insignias begin a two-day bombing campaign of Cuban airports, destroying a large portion of the Cuban air force.

On the night of April 17th, an invasion force of approximately 1400 Cuban exiles and CIA officers landed on the beach at Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs. After a few days, the insurgents became overwhelmed by the Cuban army. President Kennedy refused to provide air support for the operation.

The invasion's defeat solidified Castro's role as a national hero and strengthened Cuba-Soviet relations. Several Cuban exiles and two Americans were executed upon capture. Over 1,000 prisoners were exchanged for humanitarian aid from the U.S. government.

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago

Ok but like the sheer amount of microplastics a vampire would have would be godly, we're already on top of the ~~food~~ plastic chain as is so just going around slurping up blood from us and having no means to get rid of it would kill the most powerful vampires after 5 years max I bet

Had a conversation with my mom the other day where she told me her mortgage rate. I couldn't get it out of my head, so since I know how much she bought the house for I did the math and found out how much she pays per month and compared that to what Zillow shows for rentals in and around her neighborhood. House rentals in her neighborhood start at double what she pays for both her mortgage and property tax, but if I settle for renting a room I can pay "just" the amount she pays for her whole house. Of course I can't afford that, which is why I live way out in the sticks in a little cottage with a postage stamp of a yard for my dog, and still I have to pay half of what she does per month while getting zero equity.

I'm not blaming her, I just hate this stupid economic system.

[–] NeelixBiederman@hexbear.net 2 points 21 hours ago

I did the math today on the home we bought. The previous owners bought it in 1988. At 1988 minimum wage, they would need to work 10,000 hours to pay for the house. When we bought it in 2021, at 2021 minimum wage, it would take 36,666 hours to pay off the house.

I'm allergic to lavender so anytime I see it or even the word "lavender" my brain overreacts

Just panicked and exited instagram because I saw a video of someone making a bouquet of lavender like it could hurt me through the screen

I know med school is taking because listening to a podcast the hosts are trying to backseat a stabbing by pointing out where they would stab/wouldn't stab and my first thought was "Those are terrible picks for stabbing".

Also I'm sorry for all the posting but I'm going back to school and it's a cross country trip

[–] DeathToBritain@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

sure another woke pope is what people want, but a second Borgia papacy would be sick. the catholic church needs to rehabilitate their image with the non cringe fash youth, and a pope who fucks and drinks all the time would be sick

[–] Barabas@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And they have zero tariffs to the US, great opportunity to bring back business pope.

Sci fi portals ranked by safety in my opinion:

Blue: probably good

Green: chaotic neutral

Red: oh shit oh fuck, bad guys come out of red portals. Don't go in.

Orange: leads to a post apocalypse setting

Purple: even better than blue, you will meet a kindly wizard for sure

White: it's a Stargate

Plaid: Oh shit oh fuck!

Also it's best to note the direction it's rotating in case it's a time portal. Clockwise sends you to the future and counterclockwise sends you to the past.

On paper, Tagle, who generally prefers to be called by his nickname "Chito", seems to have all the boxes ticked to qualify him to be a pope.

potential Chito in the ~~White House~~ Apostolic Palace

incogni is a scam right

how could a company possibly do that? they wouldnt make legal cases on clients behalf, companies would not accept another company's money to impede their raison detre. if there isnt a straightforward legal procedure with trivial costs to implement its gotta be a scam

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

Big shout out to the corner store I've been going to for like 5 years for tossing me down freebies and discounts here and there. My lighters a buck off and when I get 2 packs of papers they throw me down a third. On hot days they'll tell me to grab a drink for free. Run by a nice Chinese family who I've gotten to know.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

If you're going to rank a place on stabbiness, you should consider what your goal is with the stabbing. Are you trying to be a dillhole, or are you trying to kill someone. Based on the dillhole criteria obviously you'd want to go
[No]
But if your goal was quick and efficient murder you'd definitely want to go
[Nuh uh]

I hear the next Pope will be chosen by having all the candidates compete in that Scottish sport where they throw a tree trunk

Edit: okay so how this is supposed to go is, one of you replies with "you mean caber tossing lol?", setting me up for "yeah they are looking for THE BIGGEST TOSSER IN THE VATICAN 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉", just so you know in the future

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

that Scottish sport where they throw a tree trunk

You mean caber tossing?

[–] rhubarb@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

[–] LocalOaf@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pope Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I never discarded the possibility of a Fascist Pope but I thought it would be Crusade guy fascism, not runes guy fascism

[–] LocalOaf@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

to my knowledge Hafþór isn't fash, he's the gigantic Icelandic strongman that played The Mountain on GoT and has the world record deadlift

I just thought he'd probably win if the competition was how far you can chuck a heavy log because he's probably the strongest guy in the world

stuff
