Nice of you to assume I was ever culturally relevant

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 12 points 4 days ago

You are now honorary Gen X.

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 27 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Nothing in particular? I don't see how my cultural relevancy would affect my life in any way.

[–] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Millennials are the largest generation in the workforce, they were born to the boomers the largest previous generation before everything went to piss and birth rates dropped. Millennials are the next boomers, they won’t be culturally irrelevant for a long time. Sad too, as popular culture has basically broken down to just remakes and reboots of properties from our childhood

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 4 points 3 days ago

Even worse, there isn't a next generation near the size of millennials. Part of the reason that millennials took over while Gen X didn't was because of the size of the relative generations.

You're also running into the issue that culture has become a lot more fragmented due to the Internet. You can present a millennial culture where most people may be aware of other subcultures even if they weren't a part of them. I don't know if that is going to happen for Gen Z or Alpha.

Same thing I'm doing now: living my life without concern for my cultural relevance.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Culturally irrelevant in terms of what? I think we’ll be culturally relevant until we die, just like previous generations. For example, despite their age, boomers have dominated politics for almost my entire life.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world -3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Do you think millennials become hyper political and force their agenda on everyone else?

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 days ago

Probably at least try lol. But I’m not sure we’ll have quite the political monopoly the boomers did as we’re proportionately smaller and also I think more diverse, so we have less of a singular vision for politics.

Wouldn't the generation be dead by the time that happens? Look at the oldest generation currently, the boomers, they still seem to be culturally relevant, good or bad.

So I guess to answer your question, probably dead.

[–] blackbrook@mander.xyz 13 points 4 days ago

You say it like you think cultural relevancy were a good thing, and not just a marketing tool.

[–] Noel_Skum@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Why would an entire generation ever become culturally irrelevant? Is this even a thing?

[–] tal 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well, I guess when everyone in it is dead and everything they did is totally forgotten, which will presumably happen at some point.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

At that point I guess the answer is decay

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Come hang with us Gen X'ers. We have cookies and booze.

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Some of us had too much of the booze coping with being completely ineffectual as a voting block. I'm good now, though. Sobered up in time for the real nightmare.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Same thing we always did, complain about it.

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 days ago

Keep making weird art, just like the last three decades.

[–] Ziggurat@jlai.lu 6 points 4 days ago

The same as Gen-X before us, watch Zoomer and Alpha shit on boomer, while trying to finish to pay the one bed room appartment mortgage before entering the hospice

[–] rustyfish@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

So Boomers will finally stfu about me destroying anything and everything? I think I will start living.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 1 points 3 days ago

Still enjoy the culture that I have while accepting that I'm old as fuck.

Sadly, I expect millennials to be more annoying than boomers when this transition happens.
