I'd change that as : "Being an adult is mostly realizing you didn't look as bad as you thought you did because the only person that was concerned about that was you. Everyone else was doing their own thing focusing on themselves, just like they are now."

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I've always loved the word "sonder". Knowing that people have their own lives and thoughts and usually they aren't centered on you at all is liberating. I wish I had run across this as a kid, to realize that the peer pressure I thought was there giving me anxiety was totally self-inflicted and I could just be myself.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's the case for you. My friends started talking amongst themselves about how jobless I am

[–] MycelialMass@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

To be fair you ARE the worlds dumbest man soo...

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That's a cool concept, but a made up word.

Language evolves, sure. But making up words is like genetically engineering a third leg or something.

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

..you do realize that all words are made up, right?

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

IIRC this particular word emerged in a blog post published explicitly to propose a bunch of new words.

So yes I do realise that all words have an etymology, but most were not created in the course of self aggrandizement.

But I mean like.. so what?

There was a need/desire for a word describing this concept, it was created, and is now used. It's a new word

Counter point: I don't give a shit. Live life, rock n roll, sonder on, and fuck the police.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

I like this version.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 22 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Fuck that I look way better.

I look older, sure. With less hair. A lot more single. But I'm down 90lbs and I've finally figured out style

[–] rockyracoon@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

That's awesome, congrats! This is the kind of inspiration I need.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Same here. I'm getting a lot more attention from people who I thought were way out of my league when I was younger.

Oh I haven't gotten any attention, mostly because I don't get out of the house much.

I could. Probably should take a cooking class or something

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago

Weirdly this is true.

I'm a lot less attractive in my appearance but aparently more attractive as a person.

and I've finally figured out style

Heeelllll yeah \m/

[–] Lembot_0002@lemm.ee 24 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Nah, with age I become wiser and my look is more or less stable for the last 20 years. Just more white hair but that doesn't look bad.

You're maturing wrong :)

[–] Lembot_0002@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

good engine

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I feel like this is less true for women.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Partly! Some women explode out the gate with a little age on them. My ex-gf was pretty in her 30s, but in her late 40s would turn heads when she walked in the room. And then there are the plain Janes in high school that turn out OMFG years later.

[–] OhVenus_Baby@lemmy.ml -4 points 2 days ago

All the high school girls I've seen have gotten fat, more ugly, still thirsty and dressing slutty, partying but have fallen off the wagon of beauty or so it seems. Some still got it so to say but it's definitely not the same. Health is wealth people. The younger you start or just avoid bad shit the better off life isn't linear. Alcohol is poison. Smoking is poison. Edibles are safer but again nothing is good.

[–] abbadon420@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, men definitely grow old better when it comes to looks. Women live longer than men though.

[–] Shellbeach@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s not the absence of youth that makes women less beautiful. It’s the absence of representation.

Men at 45: “distinguished.” Women at 45: “expired.” It’s not biology—it’s storytelling. We don’t see ugly old men as ugly—we see them as powerful, confidant, sexy. We don’t see aging women at all.

That’s not nature. That’s propaganda

[–] abbadon420@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

Yes it's societal values, you're framing the narrative much too negative though. Old age for women isn't all bad, older women stereotypically radiate trust and comfort for example. Look at Betty White and Dolly Parton, their age is a strength to them.

My previous comment was just about beauty. Superficial, societal, subjective beauty. Women are much more beautiful than men in general, but that usually fades with time. The beauty of men never tops that of women, but it can still grow with age.

[–] nikosey@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (3 children)

100%. Also cleaning the kitchen. Always cleaning the kitchen.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

And laundry. Always folding the laundry.

[–] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not if I never fold it and just pull out of the basket for the rest of my life

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 3 points 2 days ago

Way of life

[–] Droggelbecher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The key to a successful relationship is to have one partner that is sort of ok with doing the laundry and one partner that is sort of ok with doing the dishes.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is so true. That’s how my husband and I divide things. True, I dislike laundry, but I absolutely loathe the dishes. He is the opposite.

[–] Droggelbecher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Partner and I are the same! They begrudgingly do the dishes while I absolutely loathe them, and vice versa with the laundry.

This is why I took a lot of time to make sure everything has a place without moving things out of the way.

...which my partner then saw as extra space and filled back up again.

[–] _____@lemm.ee 7 points 2 days ago

Me when I look at my highschool id card. I thought I was hideous then. Now, on the other hand ..

[–] xorollo@leminal.space 10 points 2 days ago

People, you are beautiful ❤️

[–] SacredHeartAttack@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I feel seen. DON'T LOOK AT MY THOUGH I'M HIDEOUS!

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Not as hideous as you’ll be in a few years!

[–] MTK@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

The nice thing about not being naturally attractive is that as I get ilder and start to freak out about my physical health, I get better looking.

So for the most part I'm happy about always looking my best because dear god I'm gonna die at 40 if I don't start working on my health now.

[–] ciara@infosec.pub 4 points 2 days ago

with estrogen… you just keep looking better

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

is there any sub where I can post my pictures to get a female eye on it? Lately I've been feeling very meh about myself

[–] 1984 5 points 2 days ago

Reddit has subs for that but people are really not fair. Pretty people post pics of themselves and say they look awful. Yeah right.

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Honestly I just want some ideas for mixing up my style. I'm jealous of my wife and daughter for all of the fun dresses and jewelry and whatnot they can do but masculine outfits don't really allow for many options

There is if you know where to look, but yeah, I feel you. I want to wear long flowy coats and such, but they're all cut at the goddamn hip.

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

I hated my hair but I sure do miss it.

[–] 1984 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think guys usually look better when they get older. More charisma, confidence. Not all but quite a lot.

And I think the attraction level of genders change. Women are super attractive when they are 20, but its hard for them to stay attractive when they are 40. For men its the other way around... They look better at 40 than 20, and age better.

Of course just my opinion.

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

Nah.

Some people age well, others don't. IMO the ratio is about the same in any gender.
