Including the US in the Middle East Friendship Chart is an admission of the US as a global imperialist empire.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 48 points 2 years ago (3 children)

....this chart has Iraq and the US as FRIENDS? I know enough about that to know this chart is mainly wrong

[–] Ardipithecus@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago

It's just so reductive and silly!

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 11 points 2 years ago

Pretty sure this chart is pretty old, so presumably this was while Iraq was still directly occupied (i know that never really ended, but you get the point) and their government was literally just a translation service for the State Department and Department of War.

[–] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago

Oh yeah, that country that decimated iraq's infrastructure for a decade and caused untold human suffering and refuses to abandon its military occupation despite a formal government request? Best of allies.

The relationship between the United States & itself is complicated, not necessarily friendly.

[–] a_blanqui_slate@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago

I'm thinking of it's self-serving behavior in a middle east context.

not filling in the diagonal is cowardice.

Friendship with Isis ended

Now Iraq is best friend

I say it every time something like this happens. Stop giving graphs to liberals. They must be constrained to writing only. No visual aids, no graphs, no figures, no charts, no diagrams. I would even go as far to put them on notice for outlines, lists, and rundowns.

Isn't it weird that the only non middle east entity on this chart is the US?

[–] Ildsaye@hexbear.net 5 points 2 years ago

no-oil They put their countries around our military bases

It's a weird mixture of surprisingly knowledgeable and laughably bad

Like It's accurate that Iran Hamas aren't friends

But ISIS is Israel + US backed/controlled, and Palestinian Authority and Israel are definitely not enemies

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 3 points 2 years ago

They lump "We get off on stoking hostility toward them, but we have a discreet involvement in their existence" as "Enemies".

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 17 points 2 years ago

The new Connect Four looks really complicated and I don't want to play anymore.

[–] Coolkidbozzy@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago

Who knows what hezbollah thinks about hamas. Surely they hate israel for entirely separate reasons

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 15 points 2 years ago

This is peak liberal vibes-based geopolitical theory

[–] Ardipithecus@hexbear.net 13 points 2 years ago

Just found it's from 2014...

https://www.slate.com/blogs/the_world_/2014/07/17/the_middle_east_friendship_chart.html

...don't know if that makes it worse or not.

[–] lorty@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 2 years ago

States don't have friends, they have interests.

[–] EnsignRedshirt@hexbear.net 11 points 2 years ago

[–] 420stalin69@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

You can tell the US is friends with Iraq based on how Iraq has demanded the US pull out their military forces but the US still has its military there.

[–] Tychoxii@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

Those emojis are awful

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Does this check out, any obvious wrong ones here?

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 4 points 2 years ago

I have felt many times like I had to create a version of this for all my radical friends.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 2 points 2 years ago

They are trying to bullshit people away from us and our "friends" having a direct hand in arming and helping terrorists. That the media is not gaslighitng the public.

Take Hamas - they are not tied to Al Qaida.if anything Israel and the US have a "complicated" relation to Al Qaida and ISIS.

Such as

IDF chief finally acknowledges that Israel supplied weapons to Syrian rebels

[Fighters were armed and paid to keep Iranian-linked forces away from Israel’s border.]

When Israel has stolen Syrian land and plans to annex even more land via it's "Greater Israel" plan.

There's operation cyclone where the US armed the precursor to Al Qaida the Mudhajeen.

Operation Tymber Sycamore

Initially President Obama rejected the proposal, but later agreed, partially due to lobbying by foreign leaders, including from King Abdullah II of Jordan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

US-backed rebels often fought alongside al-Qaeda's al-Nusra Front against Ba'athist forces, and some of the US-supplied weapons were seized by the al-Nusra Front. This had been a major concern within the Obama administration when the program was first proposed in 2012. There were also allegations of U.S.-backed militias carrying out summary killings of detainees

Priti Patel visited a hospital that treats jihadis

And then ISIS being in the center of the chart with "no friends" .... I mean those weapons and funding just appear out of thin air!

ISIS and Israel should probably have an It's Complicated

Can someone make that fucked up green smiley into an emote on here?

Iran 😘 Iraq Famously historical friends, no notes.
