The Boost for Reddit app still worked for a while after the big shutdown with workarounds, like creating a mod account or using revanced.

Not anymore, as of today, the Boost for Reddit app is completely 100% dead now.

Goodbye reddit forever, hello lemmy

Edit: Working again

Reddit did some change in the API that breaks many apps. As far as I know they are aware of the issue and will fix it. More info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/redditdev/comments/1d3spoc/error_getting_submitted_with_mobile_useragent/

I misread your title and thought you were saying that the Boost for Lemmy app was now dead. I'm glad I was mistaken.

[โ€“] Drummyralf@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

I was like: "huh? But I'm using Boost right now!"

[โ€“] jackalope@lemmy.ml 102 points 5 months ago (6 children)

I like lemmy but reddit is still difficult to replace due to lack of content and active communities. But I ain't using the official app so I guess here we are.

[โ€“] Kit@lemmy.blahaj.zone 51 points 5 months ago (2 children)

You get used to it. Sorting by New and challenging yourself to kick off conversations helps.

[โ€“] deezbutts@lemm.ee 34 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'd also point out that less content has become a good thing for me.

Less endless doom scrolling, more contributing to discussions and touching grass.

[โ€“] jackalope@lemmy.ml 6 points 5 months ago

The thing is I use reddit mostly for fun stuff. I took out a lot of the political stuff that was getting me down. There's not nearly as many niche cute cat subs or active hobbyist game subs on lemmy.

[โ€“] jackalope@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 months ago

I've been on lemmy like 2 years. I like it but I wouldn't say I've gotten used to it.

[โ€“] deathdoomed2@lemmings.world 27 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I discovered Lemmy today thanks to Boost lol

Its getting better.. you'll be a +1 the activity and who wants bot or toxic activity anyway. Oh and the mods are generally much nicer here

Same. I'm looking around at the KBin instance and it's in bad shape, some of the communities are in. The admin is MIA due to IRL issues with health so he can't be around to help. Moderators are abandoning already weakened communities that are now stuffed with bots and spam content.

The only real lively community is over in Lemmy's instances. But, the Fediverse still yet has a long ways to go, it needs more maturity as an alternative and needs more time to gather membership that'll hopefully be comparable to reddit's but not in quantity but quality.

Reddit been dead for awhile, homie. Welcome.

[โ€“] martin77@sh.itjust.works 22 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I bought Boost for Lemmy on day 1 and come once in a while but let's be honest people haven't migrated off Reddit (and likely never will ) so outside of a few very specific subs there is barely anything for me to read over here...

[โ€“] overload@sopuli.xyz 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's very tech focused over here, but that makes a lot of sense when you consider only tech aligned people can figure out how to get it all working as it is.

[โ€“] Misk@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I kinda like the fact that it's only tech savvy people on here tbh. Kinda like it used to be back in the day, before everyone in the world and their cousin figured out how to get online.

Normaloids ruined the internet. It's nice to have a niche little corner of the web that they don't know about yet so they can't come and spoil it (yet) with all their endless pointless bickering and recycled political garbage reposting. Long live the 90s web 2.0 revival ๐Ÿ˜›

Welcome! Lemmy is a pretty fun place.

We got authentic weirdos unlike them Reddit fake bot weirdos.

It appears they're now blacklisting user-agents with "android" in them, people are putting out revanced patches for different clients.

[โ€“] iamroot@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 5 months ago

I wonder whether reddit will kill the free API access next.

[โ€“] oh_my_lawdy@sh.itjust.works 23 points 5 months ago

There's an incoming patch from revanced that will fix a few of the reddit clients including boost. Check revanced manager for new patches in the next few hours and you can patch boost for reddit and get it working again.

[โ€“] x_cell@slrpnk.net 17 points 5 months ago

Very sad day indeed.

I was already using reddit less. I guess this is the final goodbye.

[โ€“] nucleative@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The only 3rd party reddit app I know that is still free is RedReader. Might be others too.

Sucks they refuse to let up on the API ban but it's cool, we needed to get off reddit anyway.

My doom scrolling is way down over the past year.

[โ€“] ericthemighty@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

I feel like Lemmy is not very active though, unfortunately. Or maybe I'm on the wrong Lemmy and not subscribed to enough communities or whatever they call sublemmies.

[โ€“] CapeData@lemmy.world 15 points 5 months ago (3 children)
[โ€“] Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me 9 points 5 months ago

Seems to be the real cause. I tried the official app for shits and giggles, can't even log in. So yeah they fucked up pretty hard.

[โ€“] mcmoor@bookwormstory.social 4 points 5 months ago

Hah and I thought my modded subreddit isn't active enough so I lose the privilege. I have been thinking about creating a new one so this is a nice surprise.

I came to see if there was any chatter on this... I have a feed but no comments load. โ˜น๏ธ Are there any other options besides maybe (revanced) official reddit, if that's still a thing?

[โ€“] otter@lemmy.ca 9 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I believe a few apps got exceptions, but I don't remember which.

Redreader looks open source and it seems to be working. It's a lot more limited, which might be a good thing

I just installed Atom for reddit, it's pretty barebones but works for me

Known about lemmy for a while since the API protests, but finally took the chance to actually make an account due to this. I assume there will be a patch for this on revanced but meh

[โ€“] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Y'know I tried using boost for lemmy since that's what I used for reddit, then I noticed how jam packed full of ads it is (just like reddit).

Jerboa has a lot of the same features and is completely ad free

[โ€“] Schal330@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (2 children)

After having used Boost for Reddit for so long I was happy to cough up a bit of money to get Boost for Lemmy to not have any ads. Jerboa was great for a free app, but for me the user experience felt free. I haven't used it since BfL came out so not sure if it's improved since then.

Ah, bugger. I guess that's it for reddit on mobile for me then.

[โ€“] panja@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (5 children)

Yeah my vanced sync stopped working as well... Not sure what to do

load more comments (5 replies)

Oh, i uninstalled BfR immediately when i heard what was happening over there. I'm glad there's BfL though! Dev seems just as active here as he was over there. This definitely scratches my itch for Reddit, though i wish more users were here in the places i like to browse :'( i need more motivation to get back into my hobbies, but i fear that all died alongside Reddit. sigh

Yup but it's so much less convenient to use

So this was a screw up on reddit's end and also broke their official app for some people. They seem to have rolled that change back as of this morning. My revanced copy of baconreader works again

[โ€“] Woodcat64@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 months ago

It was working just two hours ago. Now, what am I going to do with all the free time?

[โ€“] alilbee@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

I was wondering why the redlib frontends stopped working today. Oh well, probably for the best this way.

[โ€“] ByteMe@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Actually Infinity is also dead for some reason so I guess I'm deleting reddit? Great

Works again this morning

[โ€“] ByteMe@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

It's back ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅณ

[โ€“] baruchin@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 months ago

I can confirm. As of today I'm unable to load my front page or any of my subs.
