I'm not a gun guy and I've been lazy (I only read the very short article) but to me it seems like a 10/10 "What the fuck were they thinking?" screw up by the Secret Service.

130 yards?!! The fuck was he using a snub nosed revolver, how you miss at that range?

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 32 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

He likely didn’t adjust for elevation and windage. He likely had the crosshairs exactly lined up where wanted but was too inexperienced or in too much of a rush to properly adjust

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 46 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

you really shouldn't need to adjust for 120 meters beyond setting up your sights for 100 meters then aiming ever so slightly above it. Like unless you've literally got zero weapons experience to know how to put the apple on the post, in which case why are you trying to assasssinate a politician, any shooter should know the most basics of basics of firearm usage

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 26 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Judging by photos that caught the bullets in flight the shots were at the correct height. The shoot missed to the sides of the target not up/down. Genuine incompetence.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Lack of trigger discipline then. I sentence him to more range time in hell.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 22 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Trump was apparently moving around quite a bit when they fired.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 26 points 2 months ago (6 children)

Sounds like they should've put the neck as the apple on the post instead of the head. but I'm not someone planning on doing something as asinine as trying to shoot a politician.

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

big waste of your life fr. and theres a chance you turn it into a whole shitshow and die anyways

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well I plan on living a nice long life with as minimal shitshows occurring and giving uncle death a run for his money

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 18 points 2 months ago (2 children)

yeah i need to survive long enough to see the aliens come down from the stars and bring us communism

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'll be happy building back at least to the level of what we lost in the communist movement from the the government's red purges and the liquidationists in cpusa

[–] Bobson_Dugnutt@hexbear.net 18 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'll be happy if any trees are still alive in 30 years

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Well you'll be happy to know Alaska will do quite fine then

The pro-Bernie shooter used an SKS and had zero weapons training lol

[–] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 24 points 2 months ago

Not at that range, shaky hands and all an average shooter can hit center mass with a heavy crosswind. Just saw a former secret service counter sniper say at that range hitting your target is "a given". Straight up skill issue.

[–] Finger@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

no more half measures walter

This shooter missed 8 shots from 400 feet? What? Was this a smoothbore muzzle loader or something?

I've hit targets 400 feet away with a revolver, goddamn

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If it was windy, it's pretty easy to miscalculate a shot.

[–] someone@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

I want to start a new grift for paranoid politicians: renting out huge portable fans to them that run at quickly changing speed/duration intervals, and claim it interferes with would-be snipers.

[–] D61@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

One dead, one seriously wounded, and one minor wound.

So not nothing, just missed the one target they were probably aiming for.

[–] Tachanka@hexbear.net 40 points 2 months ago (1 children)

In the video you can see Secret Service facing his direction for several seconds before Trump is shot at. It's baffling.

[–] Justice@lemmygrad.ml 44 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I assume secret service has protocols to wait up to and basically right up to the exact moment of action by an attacker. Even though it should be common knowledge that you cannot do this because of basically what we saw today, surely tons of people do things like climb nearby buildings and maybe even setup like tripods to photograph or video politicians. The secret service isn't just gonna brain some guy 150m out if there's any chance he's not doing the damn thing. Of course they should've had local police or secret service at that location either on the roof or blocking access. Crazy that this was allowed at all. Crazy that the shooter seemingly knew he could get away with it. Maybe he saw how secret service guarded the area in the past or just got lucky. This whole thing is gonna fuel so many crazy conspiracies for years to come

Evidently they don't because I'm sure people do what you describe but how do you, as a country, get to "Cop starts shooting at handcuffed perp in his own car because an acorn dropped on it" vs. "Our ROE says we can't shoot first to protect whoever the secret service protects"?

[–] TillieNeuen@hexbear.net 39 points 2 months ago (2 children)

What I don't get is why on earth didn't the SS keep Trump's head down as they got him out of there? This seems like the most basic, obvious shit to do if you're trying to protect someone. Sure, maybe the gunman on the roof was already dead, but there was no way to know whether he was working alone. There could'vebeen someone else waitingto take a shot. Aren't the SS guys supposed to be highly trained?

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 71 points 2 months ago (4 children)

My wild hunch is that Trump's entire Secret Security detail and all their supervisors are totally incompetent because Trump made certain of only one thing. That everybody connected to his direct protection was loyal to him. So everybody is some combination of dimwitted, impatient, arrogant, and entirely unprofessional.

[–] M68040@hexbear.net 30 points 2 months ago

Yeah, so far as I can tell the only reason they get by is because everyone else is every bit as generally kind of naive and gormless

[–] TillieNeuen@hexbear.net 27 points 2 months ago

That makes sense

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago

Trump's clown car doctor certainly fits those descriptors

[–] MaoTheLawn@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

At one point he had Jordan Goudreau doing security for him... You know, the guy whose business idea was putting Marines in schools to stop shooters... and then... invaded Venezuela.

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 48 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They also let him break from the bodily shield to ignite the crowd for several seconds lol

[–] TillieNeuen@hexbear.net 30 points 2 months ago

I know! That was wild to see. If there had been a 2nd shooter waiting, his grandstanding would've gotten himself killed.

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 30 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] HexBeara@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

I only hear this in Arin Hansons voice from when he played Mickey Mousecapades. I will only read that string of words in my head that same way even without AVGN for reference.

[–] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 29 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ok, fuck this guy for missing, but god damn. That’s pretty impressive. Pictures captured show the bullets merely missing his big moist head. I thought he was much closer which would’ve been pathetic.

[–] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 33 points 2 months ago

He was too close to miss. 130 yards is easy in the prone position.

This is why civilians need access to automatic weapons

Law enforcement and witnesses stated that the suspected shooter fired from a roof outside the rally venue using an AR-15–style semi-automatic rifle, before being killed by the Secret Service counter-assault team.

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago

Should have aimed or something (an "AR-15 style" rifle is probably sufficient caliber to kill Trump if you hit center mass)

I was sympathetic because 130 yards, while not crazy hard, is a not-insignificant shot to make with a handgun, especially under stress.

Then I read apparently he was using a rifle? Shame. He will not see heaven, he must first spend a thousand years in the sea of reeds, firing at the broad sides of ghost barns.

God he was so close. Couldn't he have aimed better?

[–] Tom742@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

“Blowing shooters head off” next to a picture of the shooter with head very much not blown off.

[–] allthetimesivedied@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

Hoooooooooly fuck dude.
