Trump says ‘you’re voting for the president … you’re voting for me’ when asked about vice-presidential pick

Donald Trump has said that vice presidential picks have “virtually no impact” on elections when asked about JD Vance’s fitness for office, in an apparent attempt to downplay his running mate’s role on the Republican ticket.

Trump made the comments during a combative interview at the annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) in Chicago. Asked by the Fox News journalist Harris Faulkner whether Vance would be ready to take over “on day one, if he has to be”, Trump avoided answering directly and instead downplayed the significance of the Vance’s role.

Hmm. Sarah Palin is only 60. Dan Quayle is older, at 77.

But it is possible that JD, at 39, might be their illegitimate love child.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 22 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Pretty sure Vance is the fly from the last VP debate.

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 9 points 4 months ago

As the prophecy foretold

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago (4 children)

Don’t underestimate Vance’s maniacal potential. He’s definitely more of a Cheney than a Quayle.

“You say tomatoe, I say tomatoe”

EDIT: Damnit. I got the 32yo joke wrong. It was Potatoe… 🫠

JD is doing his best to upstage that act.

Really too bad the theater went to the dreamloungers. He’s too distracted to remember his lines.

[–] Sumocat@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Ugh. Up until he chose Palin, I would’ve been fine with McCain winning. I was for Obama, not against McCain, and then he went and f***ed it all up.

[–] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 4 months ago

🎶 bomb bomb bomb Iran! 🎶 is when I decided I would not be fine with him being president

i love how vance went from never-trumper to fellating trump with the insatiable appetite of a pitbull in a NICU, even knowing full well trump would throw him out the window like a big mac wrapper without a second thought

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 22 points 4 months ago (1 children)

There's an axiom in the workplace. "A's" hire other A's, and B's hire C's. Kennedy picked LBJ, one of the savviest wheeler dealers in the Senate for his Veep; Nixon got Spiro Agnew, whose main qualification was that he was a pit bull.

Trump chose Vance and Pence for the same reason; neither could be a threat. Both took the job because they knew they'd never rise higher on their own.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

LBJ was in on the hit.

What, he was.

[–] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 17 points 4 months ago (1 children)

There’s a non-zero chance that old, fat, hateful, felonious rapist dies in the next four years. There’s no way he could become president any other way. It's not like the weird couch fucker had dignity before this.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 15 points 4 months ago (2 children)

they're going to need to hire 24/7 security for his grave to keep people from shitting on it

[–] xantoxis@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

He already has the world's best 24/7 security and people are still getting shots off at him. That grave is toast.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Don't tell them that, you'll ruin the party I'm planning.

[–] Assman@sh.itjust.works 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'm dying 💀

Big Mac wrapper really got me, beautiful imagery.

Really great writing OP

[–] OminousOrange@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Don't big macs come in boxes?

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Isn't a box just a cardboard wrapper?

I mean they have at least enough impact for your followers to try and murder your last one…

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 37 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Well, regardless of who Kamala taps as VP, I'm pretty sure we don't have to worry about them fucking the couch in the Oval Office...

So I'd say it matters.

[–] aviationeast@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Well now she could choose Vance...

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

True, but for how much longer? We can only hope that trump goes through a few VPs before November.

[–] randompasta 34 points 4 months ago

Kind of funny since he's currently running against a current vice president.

[–] JustZ@lemmy.world 32 points 4 months ago

Yeah? Let's ask John McCain.

[–] FunderPants@lemmy.ca 29 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That was bad, asked if JD Vance was ready to be president, Trump says he doesn't matter.

[–] ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com 32 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

To Trump, the question is absurd. To a narcissist, the world doesn't exist or matter without him, so what is the point of planning for after he dies?

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 23 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Dude was almost assassinated and says his pick as successor doesn’t matter. Dawg…

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 6 points 4 months ago

The weirdo almost assassinates himself with every hamburger he eats

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 18 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Everyone is saying that donnie is too old to run and should just step down. After this, they are saying it even more.

At the end he said, "if you like me i win. If you don't like me i don't win."

I was shocked that he actually appeared to be living in reality for a moment.

[–] JustZ@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

This statement really captures how he has officially become the sad clown. Clowns are such weird people. To have one be so sad, and also so old, is very unappealing.

[–] eee@lemm.ee 11 points 4 months ago

The best endorsement this poor guy can get is "he's not that important anyway" 😂😂 Old Weirdo accidentally gave his running mate the sickest burn of them all lol

[–] ohlaph@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago

He's old and weird.

[–] Nobody@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Clearly, the VP of an 80-year-old presidential candidate isn’t a position that might come with some authority down the road. The Oval Office couches are perfectly safe.

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

The VP actually has a great deal of Constitutional power already, as the Constitution declares them to be President of the Senate, with the power to cast a tie-breaking vote. Their ability to be Presiding Officer of the Senate, I would argue makes the VP more powerful than a normal Senator. The fact that modern VPs choose not to use this power, I think demonstrates that the VP actually has a lot more power than people realize.

[–] Myxomatosis@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Grouchy old groper is embarrassed by carpet-bagging couch-fucker. News at noon.

[–] LEDZeppelin@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Laughs in McCain

[–] Plopp@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago (3 children)

So what would be the consequences of Trump picking a new VP? I've heard people say he can't and it's not allowed, but clearly those things seem to have no effect on him, so what would actually stop him and what would the consequences actually be?

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Trump has already been formally nominated, and because of how we vote for electors for President and VP as a combined ticket, Vance has been formally nominated as well. If Trump decides to discard him like a used frat couch, then the Republicans would have to deal with deadlines in individual states to re-file paperwork.

We learned from the uncertainty regarding Biden's run that the first firm deadlines will start popping up next week. They are in Red states, though, so they are likely to give deference to Trump that they would not have given to a Democrat. Still, if Trump changes the upholstery too late, he may find that Vance is still on the ballot in a few states.

No reason Vance can’t step down and they hold an open primary just as they demand of the democrats. Surely it must be so easy to do!

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

so what would actually stop him and what would the consequences actually be?

Officially? Probably not much, especially since republicans do their best to skirt the law wherever possible.

Unofficially? His pride, because he'd have to admit that he made a bad decision, and all the memes making fun of dementia Don's dumb decisions. Especially since it's yet another instance where their own rhetoric can be used against them, and they'll keep floundering with their messaging.

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 months ago

Perhaps not with Pence.

The couch-fucker is a different story however.
