I did not think it was a good movie. I thought it was an awesome ride and a great rendering of the source material.

From what I remember, it was visually overwhelming, while the story and dialogue were the opposite. Additionally, for how simplistic the story was, it seemed like they could have done it in less than it's 2hr 15min runtime...

But I dunno, maybe I'll give it another shot

The races were like a child playing with toys and I loved it

This is one of my absolute favorite Christina Ricci roles. Also, there’s something to be said that this is one of the rare cartoon to live action adaptations where the movie is more colorful than the source material.

If you want more like this, check out Redline.

Wait Christini Ricci is in this? She was like one of my childhood crushes. Definitely gonna check it out.

I think I avoided it earlier because I didn't know what to expect from the movie. It was the Wachowskis and I was like, I don't want to ruin the Matrix pedestal I put them on. I think my friend said to me, "dude it's just speedracer, you shouldn't be having that high of expectations".

Totally gorgeous movie that’s a great example of the Wachowskis just having fun with film. It feels like the Saturday morning cartoon it’s aiming to replicate. The low expectations thing is less about quality and more about story not being a central focus like their other works.

Ratings aren't great but I will watch it just for you, babe. ❤️

Wasn't it made by the Watchowskys?

[–] misterbngo@awful.systems 5 points 8 hours ago

Unironically their greatest movie.

I have yet to watch it. I'll suggest it to my girlfriend so we can watch it together this week.

I saw it once for whatever reaaon. What I remember is that it looks like lazy town but then someone pulls a real gun and starts blasting real bullet holes. Some goon also got his finger bitten off.

[–] OldManBOMBIN@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago

So what you're saying is, we are number one.

[–] vaguerant@fedia.io 14 points 11 hours ago

I remember enjoying it as far as spectacle. It was a great showcase for Blu-Ray as we transitioned away from DVD. Great-looking movie. It's also got a chimp literally throwing shit at somebody, so you know, swings and roundabouts.

You're right. This movie rules

[–] Eldritch@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Did you watch that Patrick H Willems video essay as well? LOL

[–] Maerman@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I did, yeah. I had heard before that the movie is enjoying some reappraisal, and Willems made some good points. So I gave it a go. And boy howdy, was I not disappointed.

[–] Eldritch@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago

I'm still somewhere on the fence about it. Overall it's just a little too overstimulating for me lol. But the wachowskis inventiveness and storytelling skills should never be questioned. Patrick made a lot of good points. Not sure that I'm ready to agree with him just yet. But he does help shed a new light on things.

[–] Glitch@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 hours ago

Yep, one of my favorite movies!

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 4 points 11 hours ago

Yeah, I remember being surprised by this one.

[–] ClanOfTheOcho@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I knew going into it that the story had a high likelihood of not being the greatest. I also knew it was going to visually be a pretty movie. With my expectations thus set, I enjoyed it.

This is a good summary of my experience of both Speed Racer and Jupiter Ascending (although the latter has Eddie Redmayne chewing scenery like it was going out of style).
