Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

I think a good place for left-wing coverage on the protests is hasanabi, either on his Twitter or Twitch (and wherever else he is found), as he's been physically in the streets with the protestors and lives in the area.

Over the last few days, ICE raids have taken place throughout Los Angeles, as well as throughout America more generally. An increasing number of these raids are targeting migrants with no criminal record whatsoever (about 25% right now, but increasing constantly), which is a quantifiable escalation from both Trump's first term and Biden's term, where the figures were more in the realm of 5-10%.

Los Angeles has a large percentage of people who are Hispanic; as such, these raids were massively provocative, and protests began to oppose them. In response to these largely peaceful protests, the police have been exceedingly violent, with protestors and clearly marked journalists being shot at by police with "non-lethal" rounds. Trump has recently sent in the National Guard. The rhetoric of the Republicans has been, as expected, abhorrent and cruel.

While obviously coalescing around different issues, there are some parallels to be drawn with the Black Lives Matter protests five years ago; which, while drawing out enormous numbers of protestors, was eventually co-opted and gradually dismantled and failed to achieve lasting social or political goals. The two questions for this protest are: 1) What lessons have been learned by organisers and people on the ground from previous protests? and 2) Is there a general plan, or an idea of a plan, to affect political change (either top-down or bottom-up) that results in either fewer ICE raids or limiting their effectiveness?

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

UNRWA on bluesky two hours ago:

We have lost all contact with our UNRWA colleagues in Gaza, communications have been cut off.

This morning, for the first time in months, we did not receive their morning messages to say, "good morning" and "we are fine/alive".

We anxiously await to hear from our colleagues.

Auto translated:

MI-6 has passed new intelligence to the Office of the President that Russia is preparing an army of millions for a new campaign in Ukraine, which could begin in the fall. New brigades have been created and staffed for this purpose, there will be no main strike on the front line, according to British intelligence the Russian army will press on 4-7 sections of the front to stretch the AFU forces and collapse the entire defense line.

I don't want to toot my own horn too hard just yet because this is allegedly coming from British intelligence (oxymoron), but I literally predicted this and the timeframe and here is my reasoning.

Leaked documents released by Iranian media reportedly reveal that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi has been fully coordinating with Israel and carrying out its directives.

These files are part of the sensitive intelligence cache Iran recently seized from Israel.

In response to the resolution against Iran, the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency announces the following immediate reliatory measures:

  1. Iran will significantly increase its enriched uranium production, opening up a third enrichment facility in a hardened and secure location.

  2. Iran will replace first generation IR-1 centrifuges at the underground Fordow facility with advanced IR-6 centrifuges.

  3. Iran will significantly reduce its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and may expel inspectors.

This was always the expected outcome if the IAEA were to find Iran non compliant. The third enrichment facility around Natanz is already built under a mountain, just needs to be equipped with centrifuges. Iran will probably announce that soon, if not already. Given that they've already been found in non compliance, Iran will not wait 180 days to install these centrifuges and start enrichment of uranium, that will start as soon as possible.

nuke creation speedrun?

this does also very probably mean that we're gonna get military action against Iran very soon, it's gonna be their last major opportunity for a conventional war

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 21 points 2 hours ago

This is not the direction I thought they'd be going when I went to bed. Great news to wake up to, Iran standing firm.

[–] thirstyskyline@hexbear.net 28 points 2 hours ago

At the Board of Governors meeting in Vienna, the IAEA officially declared Iran in 'non-compliance' with its nuclear committments

The resolution was supported by the United States and the E3 (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom), with 19 countries voting in its favor.

Russia, China, and Burkina Faso voted against it.

Eleven countries abstained, including South Africa, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia, and Brazil.

Argentinian trots are in Cairo and going to Rafah 🫡

At this moment, I am in Cairo, Egypt. We came together with @Patriciodc to participate in the Global March to Gaza to bring humanitarian aid to Rafah. And, also, to discuss Argentina's situation with all the international delegations.

Many people from the Spanish State and Europe, upon entering Egypt, were detained and apparently will be deported. BYesterday, Milei met with the genocidal Netanyahu.

I kindly ask for your help in spreading this. The struggle of oppressed peoples around the world is one and the same.

Reading about all the intel Iran got from Israel, if it’s all legit is this the most significant haul from an espionage action since the Rosenbergs (o7), right? I feel like they now have the opportunity to end the Zionist entity once and for all with this. But I also feel they will just sit on it in exchange for being allowed to enrich more uranium and Israel pinky-promising not to kill any more nuclear scientists for a couple more years.

(And yes, I am a card-carrying member of the Nothing Ever Happens gang).

I've been thinking about it a lot, but I think there's just too much that we don't know at this point to provide even an educated guess about what's gonna happen.

The US and Israel have said that Iran has been getting "more aggressive" lately with their demands, which is encouraging from a certain perspective (the opposite would certainly be disheartening), but it can be very hard sometimes to discern confidence from desperation. Is Iran demanding more because they think they can get more, or because they know that they can't get more and are trying to bluff their way into a good position? Is the US visibly shifting to a war-like position because they think Iran is foolish and weak, or because they think that if they don't strike now, Iran will become too powerful and it'll be too late?

I don't really know. The Iran of today is considerably stronger than the Iran of the days of the JCPOA, but are they really strong enough to essentially say "We will have enrichment whether you bomb us or not"? I'm making zero predictions, merely the observation that a) the intel haul seems like a really big deal even just from what they've publically released, and b) it's interesting things have developed this far at all instead of one side crying uncle.

[–] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 7 points 1 hour ago

I've been thinking about it a lot, but I think there's just too much that we don't know at this point to provide even an educated guess about what's gonna happen.

Ultimately yes I agree 100% with this.

[–] sexywheat@hexbear.net 40 points 8 hours ago

they will just sit on it

It depends. If Pissreal fires first then it sounds like they have everything they need at this point to deal a crushing blow to the genocidal entity.

If they don't, then Iran may well continue to simply bide their time and cover their own ass, Palestine be damned.

Quantitative change inevitably leads to qualitative change. PSL is now thrust into a higher stage of struggle. Can PSL make it through this stage of struggle?

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 34 points 9 hours ago

Seems like a decent endorsement really, a lot of people probably haven't heard of them, now some will see this and say "they are the ones fighting ICE? Sign me up!" This will probably increase harassment and threats against them from the right though even if the investigation goes nowhere.

[–] companero@hexbear.net 31 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I wonder what Josh Hawley thought about the 2019 Hong Kong riots...

[–] fever@hexbear.net 33 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

When I read about Israel directly attacking Iran's nuclear facilities in this website or how a couple B-2 airplanes moving around is worrisome I do wonder whether what I am reading is a reflection of a psyop or its a first-hand psyop.

You do really believe United States or Israel will suddenly attack Iran without first causing a Syria/Libya-style internal chaos among Iranian people for a long enough time to severely weaken the country? When was the last time United States or any other imperial country have done such a thing? Seriously, I need to know.

[–] Boise_Idaho@hexbear.net 29 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

It seems extraordinarily unlikely that the US would begin waging war against the strongest non-nuclear power while facing this much domestic unrest at the same time. If the US is actually planning on waging war, they would have to put the fire out by completely drop the hammer on the protestors. The protests will most likely intensify over the weekend, so if the hammer is being dropped, it will be over the weekend as well.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 21 points 9 hours ago

And it is an assumption that they are non nuclear...

[–] sexywheat@hexbear.net 23 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

When was the last time United States or any other imperial country have done such a thing?

Iraq maybe? I don't recall any destabilisation efforts ahead of the 2003 war. But then again I was also much younger and not plugged into news 24/7 when that happened.

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 33 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The 2003 war was preceded by about a decade of harsh sanctions and intermittent missle strikes.

[–] sexywheat@hexbear.net 22 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Thanks for pointing that out. Yeah I was way too young back then to be paying attention to that I'm afraid.

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 23 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, the US has sanctioned every rival at this point that it just becomes background noise, but Iraq was hit pretty hard, and we knew damn well their military was crippled before we invaded.

Right now Iran is in a much stronger place than Iraq was, so we will probably not invade, but I wouldn't rule out military strikes.

[–] sexywheat@hexbear.net 18 points 7 hours ago

At this point I would not underestimate any level of hubris from either the Burger Reich or Pissrael
