The Niagara Movement was a civil rights group organized by W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter in 1905. After being denied admittance to hotels in Buffalo, New York, the group of twenty-nine business owners, teachers, and clergy who comprised the initial meeting gathered at Niagara Falls, Ontario (Canada) from which the group’s name derives.

The principles behind the Niagara Movement were largely in opposition to Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of Accommodationism. Trotter, editor of the Boston Guardian, had publicly reprimanded Washington at a Boston, Massachusetts meeting in 1903. In The Souls of Black Folk (1903), Du Bois had also condemned Washington for his lowered expectations for African Americans. The Niagara Movement drafted a “Declaration of Principles,” part of which stated: “We refuse to allow the impression to remain that the Negro-American assents to inferiority, is submissive under oppression and apologetic before insults.”

The Niagara Movement attempted to bring about legal change, addressing the issues of crime, economics, religion, health, and education. The movement stood apart from other black organizations at the time because of its powerful, unequivocal demand for equal rights. The Niagara Movement forcefully demanded equal economic and educational opportunity as well as the vote for black men and women. Members of the Niagara Movement sent a powerful message to the entire country through their condemnation of racial discrimination and their call for an end to segregation.

While the movement had grown to include to 170 members in 34 states by 1906, it also encountered difficulties. W.E.B. Du Bois supported the inclusion of women in the Niagara Movement, William Monroe Trotter did not. Trotter left the movement in 1908 to start his own group, the Negro-American Political League.

The Niagara Movement met annually until 1908. In that year a major race riot broke out in Springfield, Illinois. Eight blacks were killed and over 2,000 African Americans fled the city. Symbolically important because it was the first northern race riot in four decades and because it was in the hometown of Abraham Lincoln, black and white activists, including members of the Niagara Movement, felt a new more powerful, interracial organization was now needed to combat racism. Out of this concern, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was formed. The Niagara Movement was considered the precursor to the NAACP and many of its members, such as W.E.B. Du Bois, were among the new organization’s founders.

I work as a creative, I’m not good any anything else and don’t really think I can be good at anything else. I haven’t freaked out about AI in a while, but today a post on a design sub of the bad site got me good. Does any government in the world have any plans, economically, in how they’re going to deal with AI eliminating a massive portion of the workforce? Because it seems like they absolutely do not, including China, and we can’t all be plumbers and nurses.

Man I so hate the fact that I searched for a new place for three years, found one that was cheap and had seemingly chill roommates and now I just feel more sad and lonely than I ever felt at the old shitty place. Like sure the last place was shittier and more expensive and I kinda hated my roommates, but at least there I didn't want to hang out with them and I had a cat to cuddle with. Here is hurts that my roommates seemingly just aren't interested at all in doing stuff and I just feel like a total fucking loser for wanting to do stuff with them but I so don't feel like having to beg to hang out and feeling like everything gets initiated by me.

The weather got even hotter today so went to do water running in the evening and stayed in the water for a good while until my core temp came down. Much nicer to sleep now.

The scent at the lake in the evening is intoxicating, the spruce trees and birch trees smell so nice. There were at least 8 ducklings as well, swimming with us. duck-dance

Looked into Snow a while back cause Informer is a song that you need to research when you hear it if youre like me at all. Found out he wasnt a white rapper poser at all and wrote that shit after while in jail after being lingered for a stabbing he didn't do which is surface level. Turns out hes also really well liked in Jamaica, Jim Carey was wrong.

Nothing I haven't complained about before but I am extremely sick of this shit. My work texts us before we come in to tell us what 'wave' we load our vans/when we clock in.

I don't know if I have 10 minutes to get ready for work right now or 30 minutes. Or if they're just going to tell me to stay home 'because amazon cut our routes.' I give that a 50% considering it's prime holiday and they have me scheduled for a whole day of overtime this week. They WANT to cut me.

Dr. Who rantThe Disney Dr. Who plots are so confused. I just got to a particularly egregious one titled "Lucky day" Wherein a guy named Conrad 🙄 is anti-UNIT (The secret? "good guys" government organization that deals with things like aliens). To discredit UNIT and prove that aliens are made up, he and his buddies dress up as scary aliens, so UNIT will show up with guns, and then Conrad and his bros livestream it and call them fascists. This is obviously supposed to somehow mirror both right wing disinformation, and left wing activism (both sides equally bad obv.) and somehow works and everyone is mad at UNIT.

But if UNIT lied about aliens existing, and some aliens show up that look just like a particular alien they made up, wouldn't they know it's a hoax?? So what did they prove?? meow-tableflip

I wonder if everyone punches and slaps each other in Gundam because everyone is traumatized due to half the human race dying.

James Carter Cathcart, a voice actor who portrayed some of the most memorable characters in the “Pokémon” franchise and became a familiar presence in several other popular animated series, died on Tuesday in the Bronx. He was 71. His wife, Martha Jacobi, said in a social media post that he died in a hospital.

Voice actress Erica Schroeder reported on Thursday that fellow voice actor and script adaptor James Carter Cathcart has died. Cathcart's wife Martha Jacobi had announced in January 2023 that he had been diagnosed with an advanced form of throat cancer. Cathcart voiced several characters in the Pokémon anime such as Professor Oak, his grandson Gary, and Team Rocket's James and Meowth. Cathart had been involved in the franchise since its first episode. He had also worked as a script adaptor for many TV series and films in the franchise.

Aside from Pokémon, Cathcart (who also goes by the names Jimmy Zoppi, Billy Beach, and Carter Cathcart) also voiced the character of Miki Kaoru in Revolutionary Girl Utena, Cyniclons Tarb in Tokyo Mew Mew, Dilgear and others in The Slayers, Weevil Underwood in the 2000 Yu Gi Oh! anime, Kumi's Borg in Alien Nine, Sir Gallant in Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, and Butchie in One Piece.
