“The People are no longer afraid” was the cover of one of the newspapers published on the 12th of May of 1974. On April 25, 1974 a coup carried out by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), in disagreement with the colonial war that had been going on for thirteen years in Mozambique, Angola and Guinea, put an end to the Portuguese dictatorship, which lasted 48 years under the direction of Antonio Salazar and under the leadership of Marcelo Caetano (after 1968).

Thousands of people immediately left their homes, against the appeal of the military who led the coup – which insisted on the radio for people to stay at home -, especially in Lisbon and Porto, and it was with the people at their front door, shouting "death to fascism”, that the Government was surrounded in the Quartel do Carmo (Barracks of Carmo) in Lisbon; the doors of the prisons of Peniche and Caxias were opened for release all political prisoners; PIDE / DGS, the political police, was dismantled; the headquarters of newspaper of the regime, The Age, was attacked and the censorship was abolished.

The Portuguese empire would fall later in 1974, after mobilizing nearly two million forced workers (in the mines in South Africa, cotton plantations in Angola, among others) and a 13 year war – 1961-1974 – to prevent the independence of the African countries of Angola, Cabo Verde, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau. Having been built to increase the profit of monopolies, as well as to discipline the workforce, the Portuguese dictatorship fell in the hands of the workers in April of 1974. A significant part of the property owners had to flee the country after the nationalizations which were meant to put an end to the workers’ control, which had become generalized starting February of 1975, especially in the banking sector, large metallomechanical factories, etc.

The ankylose structure of the empire – as well as that of its Bonapartist regime – led to the most important social rupture in post-war Europe – so great was the rupture and the length of it that no historian to this day has managed to determine how many workers’ meetings happened during the week after the coup by the MFA because there were hundreds, maybe thousands, and countrywide.

So my computer isn't starting up anymore. I press the power button and it clicks and the fans whir for a second but then it all stops. Pressing the button at that point doesn't do anything and in order to repeat this process I need to cut power and then plug it back in.

Power is still being supplied to the USB ports - my RGB cat ear headphones are still doing their thing.

Any idea what might be broken or how I can narrow down the problem?

[–] blipblip@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Nothing on the screen at all yeah? Not even mobo splash screen?

If you have another power supply you could try that. Or unplugging all but one stick of RAM and see if it boots.

It's technically possible there's a short somehow but that's unlikely to just start happening randomly, unless you moved your PC recently or something.

Another weird possibility: certain motherboards won't boot if they don't detect a keyboard, try a different port or different keyboard.

Went to a walgreens that has those screen fridge doors and like half of them crashed so you had to open the door to see what's inside 😬 also when I went to open the doors I could feel the heat they were generating, which I don't think a fridge door is supposed to do

Nelson Mandela's grandson, Mandla Mandela, is going onboard the 2024 Gaza Flotilla tomorrow, disembarking from Instanbul.

A current MP in the National Assembly and former anti-apartheid fighter, on his way to attempt breaching the blockade in Gaza in nearly a decade since the last attempt of a South African head of state visiting the besieged Gaza Strip. There's definitely going to be some very interesting outcomes between a current and former apartheid state, as the relations between the two become even more hostile.

edit: It's delayed for 2 days at minimum due to "administrative roadblocks" from Shitrael.

It's close but you know the dude had more chest hair than that. His chest should be halfway between what you have here and a unshaven poodle. Why do you think he always wore shirts that closed close around his neck?

I cut back on my drinking a bit and started smoking weed again. I'm still drinking but significantly less. In the last month or two since I've made the switch I've lost ~20 lbs. How fucking much was I drinking??

as much of a mech-obsessed madman as i am, i have a love-hate relationship with Battletech and Mechwarrior.

the good part of battletech is that a lot of the games have first person cockpit views, in a genre where nearly every other mech game is exclusively 3rd person. MW5 even lets you punch with your mech arms, and customizing your mech makes its weapon slots look different (both a huge improvement over MW4)

BUT

the robot designs are all fucking stupid, even for a big stupid stompy robot game. People all over the internet harp on about how 'battletech is one of the most realistic mech settings, way better than that dang anime crap', but its really just stupid in a slow way rather than a fast way.

the first major problem i notice with battlemech design in battletech setting is that the mech torsos are all much too tall on the majority of humanoid mechs. It only barely makes sense in an aesthetic way, since it makes them look a bit more like a human person in silhouette, but i can see no practical purpose for a vertical, wide torso orientation rather than a flat and deep torso that is more parallel to the ground. Its just a big flat panel to catch enemy shots, at best you can attach weapons to the torso but most of the frontal surface area is just flat featureless armor plates there to catch enemy bullets and lasers. The mech torsos should be flat on top of the waist, with the internals (engine etc.) in the back and weapons, cockpits, etc. in the front, instead of how it is now where they are all stacked on top of each other. this change would reduce the target profile of the mech making it more difficult to hit and easier to armor, it would reduce the center of gravity making the mech more stable and agile, and most importantly would look cooler and further differentiate the mechs from Gundam or other series that make the mechs more strictly humanoid. A vertical torso might make sense on a mech designed to stay prone and crawl a lot, but as i will mention later you can't do anything like that in mechwarrior - you can't even really crouch and the torsos don't have any articulation like our spine to help with posture and balance.

The second problem i have with battletech mech design is the overuse of full glass canopy cockpits. I know the lore has 'transparisteel' or something to justify this, but the transparent glass-like cockpits look cartoonishly exposed on top of the lumbering metal behemoths. Even with this armored glass technology, it would seem more resource efficient to use less of this exotic material, and replace the glass canopy with a combination of tank-like periscope visors and head-tracking camera pods and other backup cameras and sensors mounted externally to the mech. I don't want every single glass canopy cockpit to disappear necessarily, but something like that should only be used on a lighter mech or one that is otherwise not expected to take a lot of close range direct fire like a sniper or a missile carrier. Adding more options for armored cockpits would make the mechs look closer to modern military vehicles and tanks, and would make the mechs aesthetic more coherent. as it is now, it gives an almost WW2 vibe with the glass canopies, but the rest of the technology is futuristic and sleek and angular like modern vehicles, creating a bit of an aesthetic clash.

Related to that aesthetic clash, a third problem I have with Battletech is that its lore seems inconsistent with its art direction. In the battletech setting, mechs are rare and difficult to manufacture and maintain, since the galactic human civilization (ComStar i think?) that built the factories that made them collapsed. the 'present' in most battletech settings is therefore a feudal future, with various warlords fighting for the scraps of the technology that came before. Battlemechs are passed down through generations in royal families, factories and schematics are closely guarded secrets, and no one really know how the shit works enough to make new battlemechs (other than the Clans). Given all this, i would expect the battlemechs to look a bit more like something out of warhammer 40k, with psuedo-religious inscriptions and obvious low-tech retrofits and clan banners and flags and markings, but all the mechs look like clean, futuristic, angular, modern military machines. At best you can paint them with cool markings in some games. It just makes the setting seem more mundane, with less of a history. There is like a whole swath of settled planets in the galaxy and there are only like 50 or 60 kinds of mechs that all look the same, it makes the setting feel like Elite:Dangerous where humanity colonized the entire galaxy just about, but there are only 12 kinds of spaceship, literally only 3 outfits to wear, and all of the space stations are identical on the inside - its a futureless, contextless world lacking a sense of real humanity or culture, just game mechanics in a void.

The fourth problem i have with battletech is the scale. This applies both to how big the mechs are, which is way too big to be practical, and to the weapon ranges, which are artificially short originally to fit the game onto a tabletop. in MW5 the LRMs max range is something like 900 meters, which is less than the max range on a current day infantry assault rifle (which can reach up to like 1500 or so meters depending on the rifle). Mechs don't all need to be like 12 stories tall either, as cool as that might be to some degree. It reduces the amount of things you can use as effective cover or concealment, not to mention all the issues related to ground pressure concentration and the square/cube law. A smaller mech would make a lot more sense on many of the videogame maps, more able to use buildings and terrain to avoid enemy fire or detection, easier to maintain and transport, easier to manufacture, easier to engage in CQB with infantry in cover, etc., with the only downsides being less able to carry heavier weapons and less visual range with the cockpit closer to the ground. Even the smalles lightest mechs in battletech, like the Flea or Locust, are several times the size of a comparably armed tank even disregarding the added height and mass from the legs - the torso alone is like 4 tanks stacked together, for seemingly no good reason, with only 1 pilot versus a tanks 3 or 4 man crew. It just doesn't make any sense even with some of my disbelief suspended. Some of the tabletop games have power armor which i really like, but there are no transitional mechs between the human-sized (or slightly bigger) power armor and the 5 or 6 storey tall Locust of Flea.

The last complaint i will issue here is that there are only minimal mobility options for Battlemechs in both games and tabletop. Some of the games and tabletop rules allow for a stationary 'crouch', but none let a mech go prone, crawl, use cover, climb, or crouch-walk. It makes me wonder why they even build humanoid robots with legs in the first place, every battletech real-time game plays like a slow motion 2-d ww2 airplane dogfight more than a gunfight, the games encourage a keep-moving-at-all-times strafing based kind of tactics instead of using cover or controlling sight lines or anything slightly realistic. The mech's can't even truly strafe the way a human's legs can, they just rotate their waist relative to the upper torso while the legs walk straight forward or straight back. They might as well be gigantic slow moving hovertanks. The entire hypothetical utility of a humanoid combat craft is that it can adjust its posture for various combat or engineering tasks, giving it better agility and ability to take cover or navigate confined spaces or close terrain compared to a wheeled or treaded vehicle. legs can kneel and crawl and step over and arms can climb and grab - so why put them on a vehicle when they can't do any of that? The only movmement option other than moving backwards/forwards and turning are the 'jump jets', which in any game i've played are too slow to be at all useful and are basically a waste of tonnage on your mech - they make you a hilariously slow, weightless, gently drifting aerial target for the entire battlefield, and thats it. they need to be faster and more horizontally focused i think to be useful.

welp thats all the ranting i can rant for now, signing off

Few things are as uninteresting as listening to someone else's dream, but this one felt different. I had a scary realistic dream last night that the skyscrapers in Helsinki were destroyed by some kind of fucked up artillery shells that burned them to a husk in an instant, and only left the burned out skeleton of the buildings standing. It was during a fireworks display, and three of the boomy sounds were a lot more ominous and deep, and then a few moments later the shells came and hit the buildings at the same time.

That was scary enough, but I remember being more scared about what the potential reaction will be. Everyone will blame the russians, of course. People were already frothing with bloodlust in the direct aftermath, including the friends I was with. That felt fucked up. But wait a minute, the shells clearly came from the northwest? And why did I hear the artillery firing? Must have been fairly close, how would the russians have gotten there? This was obviously planned to coincide with the fireworks to, idk, mask the sounds? Then I woke up relieved as heck that it was only a dream. Not looking particularly much forward to when this kind of scenario inevitably plays out in the not-too-distant future.

Some guy is writing the names “Esau” “Amalek”, “Isaac” etc in sharpie all over the neighborhood; I’m sure this is about Palestine but I can’t put together if they’re trying to say “we must destroy the children of Amalek” or “this is a religious war that cannot be explained or solved by political processes” or “Israel is fighting a war on the premise of Jewish supremacy as shown by all this biblical nonsense”.

I wasn’t really curious about the explanation until they wrote “Esau” on my door. I don’t know if they chose my door because I have a Palestine sign in the window or because my door has a gloss enamel surface that’s very attractive as a sharpie substrate (it was very easy to clean off at least). Am I being threatened?

I've heard about bait and switch job interviews, but how do employers expect those to succeed. "Well you wasted an hour of my time so I have no choice but to accept a shittier job for less money than I currently hold."

Like ??.

Honestly, every dishonest thing companies do to try and attract top talent for less seems like such a michael scott idea. We'll simply list a fair market wage for the requirements we ask for, then let them know our budget is actually half that. They'll feel too pot committed to decline.

Can someone please explain to me how some users are now able to wipe their account to the extent that it's not possible to even look at their /u/ page anymore? I've recently noticed there have been several former hexbear users (and current users who switched alts) that when trying to view their user page, it will just give an error as if that user never existed. Unlike with normally wiped accounts that still have a place holder for their account name and all comments are deleted, you can still come across old comments of these error-accounts where the content of the comment is still visible and not "deleted by creator."
