Fuck me. I went under the bathroom to twin a joist and the corner sill plate is totally gone. I can see straight through the siding to the outside.

It's bad folks.

I don't even know who to call for this, carpentry? Foundation repair?

[-] Feinsteins_Ghost@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Framing carpenter will work.

know a structural engineer? edit: nevermind, where I am, sill plates aren't usually made of wood, but if yours was wood could it have rotted away (as opposed to crumbling from structural movement)?

oof I'd start with talking to a few carpenters and if any of them even hinted that there might be complications due to needing to construct a temporary relief to take the load off that wall so a new plate can be placed, I'd be thinking about talking to an engineer

Some general contractors to give you free estimates. They'll tell you whether it will take a specialist or three or just them. Definitely get multiple quotes.

I briefly contemplated spray foam

[-] dannoffs@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

You're going to need a lot of JB weld

[-] dannoffs@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

If you have faith

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

Don't use JB Weld on this lol

[-] dannoffs@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

I feel I need to clarify that this is a joke. Do not use JB weld to repair structural problems in your home. That is what duct tape is for.

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

Wrong.

That is what ramen and Elmer's glue is for.

[-] dannoffs@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Damn, I didn't know Norm Abram was on hexbear. It's a pleasure to meet you.

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

You're welcome for my presence

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

It's just a joke

Though I have seen equally stupid uses of jb weld

[-] Maoo@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

I know the original was a joke I just wanted to make sure you didn't go buy JB Weld on this advice ha.

[-] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

It's just epoxy with some metallic shit dissolved in it, so yeah, kinda

Get some screw style foundation support jacks, start taking off your siding to see how far the rot goes. Duct tape up some trash bags to temporarily block the elements. Depending on the damage and your level of comfort/knowledge, you can probably do a decent amount of demo yourself. Call multiple general contractors to assess, get a quote from each. You don't need an engineer, the house was already designed and engineered. A rotted out hole is as simple as finding how far the damage goes and replacing materials, then doing a better job of flashing and sealing.

It sucks and it's going to cost a lot, but better to find it now than to have a partial collapse.

At the corner of my house, where the wall meets the foundation, instead of the wooden board that holds up the house there is a hole that leads to the great outdoors

[-] tamagotchicowboy@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

Depending your handiness may be able to replace it yourself, first step is to replace the hoists, then get some new wood, then maybe some new siding. Depending how much weight a car jack or two may be useful to hold it up for you.
