Capitalism, famous for not crushing unrest or having an extensive state security apparatus.

Our Freedom Loving State Security, their Evil Authoritarian Gommulist Secret Police

“Why, yes, I was born after 1991 and my family starved for the first time since WWII. Why do you ask?”

[–] angrytoadnoises@lemmygrad.ml 72 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Any and all gaming projects, be they full game releases or some dudes personal mod, will be hounded by JAQing off about how communism is actually bad. There's a real smugness to it, too. Like, "whao guys I know you're having fun over here but we're all on the same page that stalin murdered my grandparents with a giant spoon, right??"

[–] Tankiedesantski@hexbear.net 48 points 3 months ago (1 children)

we're all on the same page that stalin murdered my grandparents

"Damn, it really sucks for you that your grandparents were Nazis or Kulaks."

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago

Worse — Nazi Kulaks, and Stalin killed them with his comically large spoon! :-(

[–] JayTreeman@hexbear.net 43 points 3 months ago

I have actual ancestors that were killed in crimea after the communist revolution. They owned a mill and apparently were dicks and colonizers. I told my daughter about it and she responded 'they probably had it coming'. I'm a very proud father

"As a person who lived under communism" but he was born in 1997

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 55 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yeah he was probably born during the peak Eastern European capitalist hollowing.

[–] MeowZedong@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 3 months ago

Communism is when capitalism.

[–] ThisMachinePostsHog@hexbear.net 69 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This reminds me of the time that I encountered one of my cousins whom I hadn't talked to in 10 years at a family event. When he asked me what I had been up to, I told him that I was really into the Tropico series, and how I've been building a little communist island society and was having a lot of fun. His first response was, "Oh cool, so you have bread lines, secret police, and all of your citizens are poor af?" pain

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 66 points 3 months ago

"No actually I decided to kill 1% of my population and cripple another 5% because the alternative was wearing a mask at Applebees"

[–] ThisMachinePostsHog@hexbear.net 40 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Have a friend from Australia who lived in an ostensibly rich U.S. city for about a year and said they got real culture shock by how dilapidated the infrastructure was.

[–] Greenleaf@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

The only places that have “good” infrastructure in the US are in rings around cities where the development has been fairly recent so the roads and all haven’t had time to degrade. Outside of the ring you have rural areas and they either have nonexistent infrastructure or what they have is dilapidated. Inside that ring you have older parts of the city that get neglected and usually the more non-white it gets the less resources are spent on infrastructure so it just gets worse.

Unfortunately, the people who live in that ring of good infrastructure tend to also be who American society caters to (middle class and rich white people).

TIL South Carolina is a Communist state. I guess the Blueanon people were right.

[–] Egon@hexbear.net 56 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Their secret police our undercover cops.
Also define totalitarian without using the words authoritarian or tankie.

I hate these people lukashenko-tired

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 54 points 3 months ago

The game actually is Eastern European. The devs are from Eastern Slovakia.

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 42 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

"Hello fellow Eastern Europeans" fellow-kids

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 40 points 3 months ago

It's communism, everything is a government mechanic socialism-is-when

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 38 points 3 months ago (2 children)

It does have secret police, and ratings for how loyal workers must be to work in places like schools. At least it did when I played it. He should ask the pro Palestine students if their political affiliations have resulted in a loss of opportunities.

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago

if you name your secret police "FBI" then they aren't authoritarian

[–] lorty@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 3 months ago

Which is funny that it is included since I don't remember any other city builders requiring your police to evict people, crush protests and strikes.

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 33 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I downloaded a tiny police station that was labelled "Post Office, Not Secret Police". I laughed, but yes there are some basic government mechanics. It's pretty underdeveloped compared to the industrial and transport stuff though. Unlike Cities: Skylines, you cannot legalise weed (or even choose crops other than "crops"). You can set prison sentences though.

[–] context@hexbear.net 40 points 3 months ago (2 children)

(or even choose crops other than "crops")

it's pretty convenient having a monoculture that's fungible for all your basic needs

corn-man-khrush food

corn-man-khrush livestock

corn-man-khrush alcohol

corn-man-khrush fabric

[–] T34_69@hexbear.net 29 points 3 months ago

anakin-padme-2 You're talking about beanis, right?

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I think it would be dope having either re-fertilising fields or crop rotation or something. Different nitrite levels, acidity etc. The pollution mechanic is also single note

[–] HakFoo@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

There's a case that can definitely be made for simpler models for economies and pollution. You get too detailed and the fun factor drifts-- there's too much to manage.

I tried Civ 6 recently when it was like $3 and found myself foundering even though I had plenty of playtime with the first one back in the 386 days-- too many new mechanics.

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This is definitely the game that does (become unfun through too much detail) that a lot, but it lets you turn off each mechanic that has been introduced. Real W&Rheads play on "realistic mode", which means you have to import labour, gravel, concrete, pave roads etc etc. I generally don't because um.

This CIA officer must hate his fucking life; "Johnson! you're assigned to the steam department!"

[–] Moss@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I always think it's the Chinese Chinese Communist Party

[–] Tachanka@hexbear.net 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Oh no they're doubling down on the nationalism, I was hoping for the Chinese Communist Communist Party

[–] bumpusoot@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

[–] bumpusoot@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago

The codec pack was named after the USSR, it was great.

[–] Tunnelvision@hexbear.net 21 points 3 months ago

The fact they were able to post this means the secret police did not go far enough.

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago

Does sim city have that?
