Antiwork

For the abolition of work. Yes really, abolish work! Not "reform work" but the destruction of work as a separate field of human activity.

To save the world, we're going to have to stop working! — David Graeber

A strange delusion possesses the working classes of the nations where capitalist civilization holds its sway. ...the love of work... Instead of opposing this mental aberration, the priests, the economists, and the moralists have cast a sacred halo over work. — Paul Lafargue

In communist society, where nobody has one exclusive sphere of activity but each can become accomplished in any branch he wishes, society regulates the general production and thus makes it possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner, just as I have a mind, without ever becoming hunter, fisherman, herdsman or critic. — Karl Marx

In the glorification of 'work', in the unwearied talk of the 'blessing of work', I see the same covert idea as in the praise of useful impersonal actions: that of fear of everything individual. — Friedrich Nietzsche

If hard work were such a wonderful thing, surely the rich would have kept it all to themselves. — Lane Kirkland

The bottom line is simple: all of us deserve to make the most of our potential as we see fit, to be the masters of our own destinies. Being forced to sell these things away to survive is tragic and humiliating. We don’t have to live like this. ― CrimethInc

The real pressing question is who is in the sausage though.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 51 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The other pig that went to the market.

[–] metaStatic@kbin.earth 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So as a film editor…my job is bullshit?

Art is bullshit now? That’s kind of what I’m hearing.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 29 points 3 months ago (3 children)

It depends. Do you edit videos for pragerU? Or you do something more useful for society like PornHub?

[–] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 3 months ago

PragerU is a bane on our society

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 12 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

So as a film editor…my job is bullshit?

Well, if you can't imagine a pig wearing clothes doing your job, then yes!

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

Art is bullshit now?

Any non-pig art.

[–] confusedbytheBasics@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (3 children)

What's up with your imagination that you cannot imagine a pig artist in a children's book?

this has severe conservative energy. the fuck is this even supposed to mean? if you're paid for it, it's a job, dumbass. that's literally the only metric.

[–] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 3 months ago (7 children)

Yeah I feel like this post is kind of weirdly shitty/gate keeping in its own way

I think it's alluding to the theory set out in this book:

I think it's trying to say that intellectual jobs are not jobs. Which is demonstrably not true.

If all the investment bankers went away we'd probably be fine but if all the cyber security experts went away there'd be a big problem. The job is labour intensive, but one of them is much less important than the other.

[–] mydoomlessaccount@infosec.pub 48 points 3 months ago (4 children)

Understood. Time to make a living by butchering my own kind and turning them into sausages.

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 months ago

Now hold on there Sweeney Todd

I can imagine a pig collecting the labour value of the proletariat through his investments in capital and living it up on a yacht with a bunch of cocaine and piggy hookers

[–] Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

All animals are equal but some are more equal than others

[–] zer0squar3d@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 months ago

Idk why but I'm busting up over piggy hookers

[–] dillekant@slrpnk.net 6 points 3 months ago

Also isn't that pig making products out of other pigs?

[–] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 36 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (3 children)

This is kind of bullshit because any job that doesn’t immediately come to mind and can be used as a counter example can be hand waved away with “but I can picture it.”

Edit: someone in this thread used the example of a “a piggy sitting all day at a PC.” I didn’t realize we were cool with gatekeeping jobs. That’s not cool if you ask me.

The converse is not necessarily true. I can imagine a pig sitting at a desk writing code, but that doesn't mean my job isn't bullshit.

I reckon a lot of people would consider my job to not be a real job, but I can imagine a pig sitting in front of a computer just fine.

[–] MeDuViNoX@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Just turn off the screen, you'll see one. /s

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 14 points 3 months ago

Ha, nice try, I don't work for the police

[–] Daxtron2@startrek.website 26 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Are there jobs you can't imagine? Isn't that the point of imagination?

Quick scan if the comments and not seeing anything about how this pig likely just chopped up either friends or family to turn into bologna for a worm driving an apple.

[–] YerbaYerba@lemm.ee 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

All beef bologna. Cows are an underclass in the Richard Scary universe.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

They know what they did.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 months ago

Issue #2 of Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees (recent comic, basically Dexter meets Richard Scarry, really good!) had a cover that played off of this lol.

Your lack of imagination has no bearing on the validity of my, or anyone else's job.

[–] FiniteBanjo 23 points 3 months ago (2 children)

As an artist I cannot think of a single thing this disqualifies. Including sex work.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

I get where you're coming from, and I would love to see a Richard Scary take on "AI Prompt Engineer" or "Influencer".

Pig Hannibal Lecter

[–] Wilzax@lemmy.world 19 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I can imagine a pig in a children's book sitting in front of a computer with several empty coffee cups surrounding it. That covers about 40% of the job market these days.

[–] MacNCheezus 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)
[–] merari42@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago (2 children)

That pig is way to cheerful at doing it's mind numbing corporate job. But then again it's less bad than the sociopath butcher pig.

Oh no I don’t think a piggy can hold a pipetter

[–] eran_morad@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

Fuck outta here with this shit.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 12 points 3 months ago

Meaning all jobs are valuable or he has no imagination?

[–] OfficerBribe@lemm.ee 10 points 3 months ago

Hard disagree. I can easily imagine anyone in this scenario including some Instagram influencer peddling crypto schemes as this pig.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

So... Who's for dinner?

[–] LoamImprovement@beehaw.org 7 points 3 months ago

I can picture it, but I cannot imagine the pig happy.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

Well I can't imagine a pig drawing this so that's a pretty idiotic metric

I'm not a "crazed gunman," I'm an assassin!

One is a job and the other's mental sickness
